(1) The Main Menu This is the main menu menu for The Works. To select a utility, use the cursor keys to highlight a specific option. Then press the RETURN/ENTER key to use that option. You can also press the first letter of each utility name to activate it. Pressing "E" or the ESC key will exit The Works and return you to the desktop. (1) (2) The Spreadsheet Use the cursor keys to move around the spreadsheet row by row or column by column. Pageup and Pagedown move a page at a time. To enter characters or numbers in a specific cell, type the number or or text, then press the RETURN/ENTER key. To edit, simply press enter on the value/text to be changed. To edit or enter a formula, position the cursor, then press the F2 key. Enter the formula, one operation at a time, then press ESC. Legal functions are: SUM(range) --- Total + Sum of range SMS(range) --- Total - Sum of range AVG(range) --- Total + Average (mean) of range (range is in the format of cell:cell) +Cell reference or value --- Total + ref or value -Cell reference or value --- Total - reference or value *Cell reference or value --- Total * reference or value /Cell reference or value --- Total / reference or value ^Cell reference or value --- Total + square of reference or value (2) (3) The Word Processor Use the keyboard to enter text, or the cursor keys to position the cursor. The INSert key toggles between insert and overwrite modes. F1 - Help F2 - save file and then return to The Works main menu. F3 - save the file, and then resume editing. F4 - abort the present edit (all changes since the last save will be lost), and bring up the fileloader. F5 - prints the entire file presently being edited. F6 - marks the begining of a block of text. F7 - marks the end of that block. F8 - Copies the currently marked block to the present cursor position. F9 - Deletes the currently marked block F10 - Clear present block ESC - Aborts the edit returns to the main menu. Load the file that you want to check. Then select the 'Check File' option. While checking, press: ENTER to add the current highlighed word to the dictionary. ESC to ignore this occurence of the word. TAB to add this word to the rejects file and thereby ignore ALL future occurences. SPACE BAR to choose from dictionary list, or edit the word by hand. Q to quit the check, and write the remainder of the unchecked file, to the checked portion. Use the 'Locate Word' function to check the existence of a certain word, without having to load in a document. If the check is slower than normal, or is inaccurate, use the 'ReIndex Dictionary' function. To delete all the words in the Rejects file (and start fresh) use the 'Purge Rejects' option. In order to remove a selection of the words, use the Database. (4) (5) The Database A simple menu driven, dBase compatible database. Select the file that you wish to use. Once selected you can: SORT : by selecting the fieldname to sort, you can change the order of the records in the file. VIEW/EDIT/ADD : use the cursor keys to scroll up and down, left and right through the database. Press enter or space to being editing the current field. Move the cursor all the way to the bottom of the database to add a new record. APPEND FROM OTHER DATABASE/FILE : Choose a .DBF file of identical or almost identical structure. Or choose a text file. WRITE TO TEXT FILE : Enter a file name and the contents of the current database file will be written to an ASCII file. MODIFY DATABASE : allows you to change field names and lengths, and/or add new ones. CREATE/MODIFY REPORT : in order to print the information in your database, you must enter the desired fieldnames in this report. They may be placed anywhere on the page, but must begin and end with '<' and '>' signs. Ordinary text may also be placed anywhere in the report and will print as well. PRINT REPORT : if a report for the current file exists it will be printed. If the database you require does not exist, use the CREATE NEW DATABASE option to create a new one. You must enter a fieldname, type and length for each field. If the field is numeric, it can have a decimal length. (5) (6) The Calculator Perform simple calculations with a keypad driven calculator. Use the '=' key to force a total. Input is 'printed' upon and endless 'tape'. Select edit to change any entry on the tape and recalcuate the total. When you exit the calculator, any numbers on the tape or in the total bar will be preserved until you 'clear' them. (6) (7) The Address Book Keep track of names, addresses, and phone numbers. Print complete lists, enevelopes or labels. Add New Label : Enter the required information to add a new name. Viewing & Editing Labels : Use the up and down cursor keys to scroll through window at left. Press RETURN/ENTER to edit the current one. Press F2 to search, F3 to toggle print status, or DEL to toggle delete on and off. Memos - While viewing the name database, press the INS key to add/edit a memo. Printing F10 - Toggle "Print Type : Labels" (page at a time) or "Priny Type : Envelopes" (one at a time). Print One : Print one label (enter search key) Print Several : Print all labels whose print status has been toggled "on" Print All : Print all labels unconditionally. Print Black Book : Print just names and phone numbers. (7) (8) The Time Manager Keep track of dates, appointments, and even set up to five alarms per day. Use the cursor keys to highlight a date. Press ENTER/ RETURN to add or edit an entry. Press F2 to add a year to the calendar. Press F3 to add/edit alarms. Format Diskette - format the disk in drive A: or B: Delete File(s) - delete a single file Copy File(s) - choose the first file, then select the destination directory with the second window. (press ESC or place the cursor on another file. Move File(s) - Identical to copy file, but the original file is erased after it is copied. Rename File - Select the desired file, then enter a new name for it. Lock File(s) - Protect a file from accidental erasure. Unlock File(s) - Allow a file that had been locked to be erased. Make Directory - Create a new DOS directory. Remove Directory- Delete an existing DOS directory. View File(s) - Examine the contents of a file in a scrolling window. Clear Diskette - Like a fast format, delete all files from a diskette. Set Date - Set the DOS system date. Set Time - Set the DOS clock. Print File(s) (background) - Use DOS's PRINT command Print File(s) (foreground) - Simply prints a selected file. Run Program - Run an external program or batch file. In most cases, after exiting the external program, FreeWorks will return to the Quick DOS application. Change Volume Label - Change the drive's name. Display Directory Tree - Display a representation of the system directory tree. Copy Diskette - Copy an entire diskette. (9) (10) The File Encoder/Decoder Protect your text or database files so that no one else read them. Select a file with the file loader, choose 'Encrypt' and enter a password. When done, view the completed encryption in the righthand window, press ESC and select 'Save' if satisfied. To decrypt a file, first select a previously encrypted file, then select decrypt. Enter the password, and wait while the file in decrypted. If it decodes properly (examine window), select the save file option. Don't forget your password. There is nothing I can do if you forget it! (10) (11) The File Loader F1 - Help F2 - Enter the name and path of a file not presently being shown. F3 - Choose another drive. Control-RETURN/ENTER - Select multiple files (DOS shell only) RETURN/ENTER (filename) - Select a single file RETURN/ENTER (dir name) - Changes to the selected directory RETURN/ENTER (Previous) - Changes to the last directory RETURN/ENTER (Root) - Changes to the Root Directory (11)
