Welcome to GEnie (tm), the doorway to the Information Age. GEnie will guide you through that world and will be at your command to guide and advise you as you explore this new age. GEnie is brought to you by the General Electric Information Services Company. GEnie will display menu pages from which you simply type a number and press your RETURN key. (Some computers label the RETURN key "ENTER".) Please press RETURN now. Don't be afraid to press the wrong key or make a mistake; you can't break GEnie. All you have to do is learn a few words and GEnie will be at your command. Menus on GEnie are displayed with a fixed width of 40 characters but the information that you select will be tailored to your personal computer. Talking to GEnie is easy. But before we begin, GEnie needs to learn a few things about you and your computer. Please press RETURN now. (1 OF 4) First, GEnie needs to know how many characters per line your computer can display. The most common computers today can display 80, 64 or 40 characters per line. How many characters per line does your computer display? Enter a number between (40 and 250) ?80 (2 OF 4) Now GEnie needs to know how many lines your screen can display. When information on GEnie is longer than the number of lines you choose, GEnie will pause and allow you to press RETURN to continue reading the next screen. Most computers today have 24, 20, or 16 lines per screen. You can also choose to have GEnie make information available without pausing at each screen by entering a "0", indicating no pagination. ("0" is suggested only for experienced telecommunicators who can utilize a capture buffer.) How many lines per page (screen height) does your computer display? Enter a number between 16 and 24, or 0 ?16 A Control-S will tell GEnie to "pause" sending text to you regardless of the size of your screen. A Control-Q will resume having the text displayed to your screen. Hold down the CONTROL key and press "S" to send a Control-S character. Your CONTROL key is used like you would use a shift key. It will work the same way for a Control-Q. Some computers do not have a CONTROL key, please refer to the instructions for your terminal program for the equivalent keypress for your software package. (3 OF 4) GEnie will allow you to correct your mistakes (before you press RETURN) by either using your backspace or underline key to erase what you previously typed. Most computers use the BACKSPACE today; but some commercial terminals may use the UNDERLINE key. Remember that your arrow/cursor keys are not active in GEnie. You should use only the BACKSPACE key on your keyboard. Press the single character key that you wish to use to correct mistakes and then press RETURN. If you have both a DELETE and a BACKSPACE key, use the BACKSPACE key only. Rubout characters sent by your DELETE key are not allowed. ? Empty line received, character delete not changed from backspace (decimal 8). (4 OF 4) You may interrupt GEnie and return to the menu at any point by pressing your computer's BREAK key. If your computer does not have a BREAK key, you may choose another break sequence. The BREAK character you select will be used to abort information lists, signal the end of an upload, and interrupt your current activity. It is important that you do not select a regular character if your terminal does not have a BREAK key. Many people choose to use the CONTROL key in combination with another key to send a break, such as CONTROL-C or CONTROL-B. Remember, to use a CONTROL key, you hold the CONTROL key down while pressing the character key once. Type the key or key combination that you wish to use to interrupt GEnie and press RETURN. Just press RETURN only for true break if your software supprts it (250 ms BRK). ?a Ascii value is decimal 97 Thank you for completing the above information. You can view or modify this information in the future by typing SETUP from any GEnie menu prompt. No letters waiting. Entering GEnie*Basic Services GEnie Announcements (FREE) 1.
