1. What is it all about ?

Linux/m68k is a port of the Linux operating system to architectures using the Motorola 680x0 processor family. Currently, the only machines on which Linux/m68k is usable are the Amiga and Atari computers. Someone has started working on a Mac port, but that is all known to us at the time being.

The current status of the kernel for Linux/m68k has to be split: The current kernel from the 0.9 series, 0.9.13, is pretty stable in most aspects. It should run quite well even on 68040 based systems (it does not yet run on 68060), and for the standard 68030 based computers there have not been any problems for a long time. The newer kernel series, 1.2.13 (currently at patchlevel 4), is at the same "stage" as the corresponding kernel for intel-based Linux. However, it might not yet run perfectly on 68040s.

The Amiga and Atari kernels are comparably stable.

No matter how stable a kernel is said to be - before you start installing anything, keep in mind: Use it if you want to, but use it at your own risk and BE CAREFUL. This is especially important when you perform the critical steps of the installation (repartitioning your harddisk). Whereever you can, MAKE BACKUPS. It might save your life.
