CTF is short for Capture The Flag, which is a multiplayer extension for
quake. In CTF you have two teams, one red team and a blue one. The object
of the game is to score as many points as you can. The team with the most
points wins when the time is up. Normally, one game is 15 minutes, then the
server will change the map. Each teams flag is located in a base, this base
is located on different places for different maps. To Capture The Flag, you
have to run into the other teams base, take their flag (this is done by running
on to it) and then return to your base and run over your flag (like switching
them, but you don't carry your own flag away). However, if your flag is not in
your base (i.e someone from the other team has taken it) you will not be
able to capture it until your flag has been returned to base. If the flag
carrier in your team drops the flag (dies) you can pick it up to keep on
carrying it to your base.
To return your flag to your base, you have to kill the guy that's carrying
your flag, when he dies he will drop the flag. Just run over it and it will
pop up in your base.
This is the scoring system for CTF:
Frag a guy from the other team: 1 p
Kill yourself (drown etc.): -1 p
Point for Capturing the flag: 15p
Bouns points for other team members when capturing: 10p
Frag enemy flag carrier: 2p
Picking up your own flag when it is dropped: 1p
Fragging someone that has recently injured your teams flag-carrier: 2p
Fragging someone close to the flag: 1p
Each individual get their own points. Then all team members points are added
up to the total team points.
The grappling hook is a CTF extension. This makes the axe into a grappling
hook which can be thrown away, let's say onto a wall, and then pull the
player to that place. You can also switch weapon while hooked on to something,
and this means that you can shoot while still hooked. This is very good, because
you can, for example, hook up to the roof in your base, and while hanging there,
change your weapon to the rocket launcher. This will enable you to protect
your base from a point that may not be visible to the enemies when they
enter your base. This is also called "camping" which is explained later.
You can also hook onto another player (only enemies though). This will
cause the enemy player's health to start dropping. If you also switch
your weapon to shotgun or double-barreled shotgun while hooked, this
becomes an effective close-combat weapon when you don't have any other weapons.
Oh, and if someone has hooked on to you, and you're almost dead, jump into
a lava lake and the guy that's hooked on to you will follow you down!
Note: If you don't download the Hook patch it will look like the axe,
otherwise it will look like this:
Impulse command: 22
This is when you are in the same place for a long time. In your base,
waiting for a weapon or whatever to pop up. This could be a big waste
of time, and make people dislike you. BUT it can also be very useful.
If you have a rocket launcher with 99 rockets and you have hooked up
to the roof of your base, you can protect your base very effectively
and thus scoring many points for yourself and your team.
This is a message mode that will allow you to say things that will
only pop up on your teammembers screen. It is very important to
communicate with your teammembers. You can bind hotkeys for different
messages. For example: "Need help in base", "A rune in our base" etc.
Runes are another extension for CTF. These are small objects that,
when picked up gives you some extra powers. These runes will not go
away until you die, and then someone else can pick them up.
There are four different runes on each CTF level. They are:
Black magic / Strength
When you shoot at an enemy, you damage them twice as much as without strength.
Hell magic / Haste
Doubles the firing rate of your weapon. Very effective but dangerous with rocketlauncher!
Earth Magic / Resistance
When you have this rune you only take half the damage when shot.
Elder Magic / Regeneration
This rune will regenerate your health and your shield (if you have one) to a maximum of 150
However, if you take a 100 health (and you already have full health) the health will stay
at 200 until you get damaged.
If you have downloaded CTF the flags will look like this:
Red Flag - Blue Flag
Otherwise, the flags will look like the keys in single-player quake. This is my favourite type of game for Quake, although I haven't tried Team Fortress for Quakeworld yet.
