***************************************************************************** INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISK CATALOGUE ------------------------------- by K. R. SHARKEY 3 Gumnut St. ALBION PARK RAIL N.S.W. 2527 AUSTRALIA ***************************************************************************** 20th. April, 1992 Welcome to MY FAVOURITE DISK CATALOGUE.(1 MEG REQUIRED) I hope you find it as useful and simple to use as I intended to make it while designing the code for it. The program is a simple to use disk library filer and is used to store and sort, search and print a list of any volume of your disk library. I took great pains to ensure that an absolute minimum of typing was involved when entering the names of your disks and directories and this was achieved by allowing the program to interrogate the disk/dir itself and automatically store the contents in a file. To select the Disk/Dir to read simply point and click. The filer can store up to 1000 entries (I have found this to be a manageable size for a disk volume in my library) and each entry or group of entries can be edited or cut at will. Each entry also has an ID attached to it when it is saved. I generally number my disks in the following manner, Volume 1, Disk 01, and this is entered in the filer as 101, Volume 3, Disk 15 would be 315 and so on, but, you can suit yourself as any ID up to eight characters long will be accepted. Throughout this program the left mouse key or the Y key can be used to answer "YES" or indicate proceed. The right mouse key or N key mean "NO". The Esc key or the Q key indicate QUIT or EXIT. A description of the programs functions follows. ***************************************************************************** NEW --- This option deletes the current file and returns to the main screen with no entries and the default catalogue name "UNTITLED". LOAD ---- Presents a file selector which allows you to select a catalogue for loading. A sample catalogue is on the disk, so you can try this. Point and click (or Double click to proceed) on the entries in the file selector to choose. Pressing the right mouse key gives access to Volumes available, and the small circular icon at the top left of the selector selects the parent directory. SAVE ---- Save is disabled on this copy of the program as the program is not Public Domain and this is a demonstration copy only. If you like the program and would like a full working copy please contact me. Click on SAVE for further details. EDIT ---- Allows you to either add new entries manually to the data file or change existing entries as you will. Click on Edit to activate this mode. A screen will appear to allow editing. At the top right side of the screen are six icons, they are from left, Up/down one entry, up/down ten entries, top/bottom of file. They allpow you to click your way through the file, alternatively you can click on the ENTRY box and enter the number of the entry (find this out using show) you want to edit, then press return. Once you have the entry on screen that you want to alter then click on the appropriate part of the entry to activate the edit box and enter the new details, not forgetting to terminate your entry by pressing return. If you want to add a completely new entry to the file, click on NEW ENTRY and a field will be prepared for the entry. Simply enter the data by clicking on the field you want the data to appear in and typing in the information. During this process if you wish to clear the field you are entering data into press Amiga + X. Similarly the Del and <- Keys will delete characters. The UNDO EDIT box does just that. SORT ---- If a entry exists in the filer it can be sorted using this function. Click on sort, and a screen will appear offering sorts by either DISK ID, DISK NAME, FILE NAME or a general or COMMON SORT. Click on the one you want the entries to be alphabetically sorted into and the program will start to sort the entries, reporting back to the main menu screen when it is complete. The sorted entries can now be printed or saved as required in their new order. SHOW ---- Undoubtedly this would have to be the most useful feature. It allows you to view the entries. After you have selected this function, you can, view the entries a page at a time by pressing certain keys or using the mouse keys. The Key strokes are as follows Q or Esc Exits from the SHOW mode back to the main menu. 1 - 9 Moves file length/10 X number pressed into the file. T Moves to top of file. M Moves to middle of file. B Moves to bottom of file. Up Arrow or L/MOUSE Back one page. Down Arrow or R/MOUSE Forward one page. Both Mouse buttons together also exits this mode. If the EXCLUDE SYSTEM DIRS flag is set in prefs, any System directories present in the file will be shown crossed out on the screen. If search has been used on this file or any previous file and the search target is found then any entries which match the target will be shown highlighted. DRIVE ----- Drive allows you to nominate either Df0: or Df1: when reading in full disks, ie. if READ FROM SPECIFIC DIR flag is not set in prefs. Simply click on the drive you wish to use and click on RETURN TO MAIN MENU. PRINT ----- Prints out the current file. If the prefs have been set to Colour Printer then the program will attempt to use the colours on the printer when formatting its output. If the EXCLUDE SYSTEM DIRS FLAG is set in prefs then the output will not include system directories such as C: or Devs:. If the PRINT ALL OF FILE flag is set on the Prefs screen then all of the file will be printed verbatim, otherwise only the disk id and the filename will be printed. An indicator on the screen will indicate how much of the file is left to print as the file prints. If you wish you can sort the file before printing it. DELETE ------ Presents you with a file requester (see LOAD for operation of requester) and then allows you to delete any file from any disk. The program will ask for confirmation before proceeding with deletion. SEARCH ------ Type the Name or Part Of Name fore the search and the program will search through the file showing where it is found as it goes. Any search target which is entered will be highlighted when using the show function as well, and will also be highlighted in any future file loaded and shown. When the search finds a target the program will remember it for the CUT feature. See CUT later in this text. PREF ---- This is where the various personal preferences are set by the user. Simply click on a flag (preference) once to set it (highlighted) and once more to disable it. Whyen setting colours type in any number you like up to 9999 and then press return to enter it. Keep trying to find a screen you like. The default screen can be chosen by setting the screen colour flag to screen colour 1 instead of screen colour 0. The option to save the preferences will automatically be offered to you if you make any changes. QUIT ---- You will be asked if you are sure first and if you respond by pressing the left mouse button or Y then the program will return you to the Amigados or Workbench screen. CUT --- Using CUT you can extract a list of entries between the range of numbers which you set on the bottom of the screen. The numbers represent the numbers shown on the left side of the screen on the SHOW screen. To set the range click on the begin or ending number to set at the bottom of the screen and enter the numbers after determining them from the SHOW screen. Once you have set a range greater than 1 you can choose CUT RANGE OF ENTRIES from the top of the screen. A selector box will appear asking where to save the resulting files. Once you have given a file name two files will be created with the Extensions .Clip1 and .Clip2. One file will be the entries which you marked by selecting the range, and the other will be the remainder of the file. You can now do what you like with these results. The program will not damage the original file. The next feature is to CUT LAST SEARCHED AND FOUND. It works in the same manner as CUT RANGE ..... except instead of using a range of numbers as the target entries to cut, it will use the the last searched for and found entries. This is very powerful because you can use it to extract for example all entries containing the words "Utility" or "Games" or anything else you wish to isolate into a single file. Remember to search for something first. CUT INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES ---------------------- This screen is similar to the edit screen except it will only allow you to cut an entry and not edit it. At the top right side of the screen are six icons, they are from left, Up/down one entry, up/down ten entries, top/bottom of file. They allow you to click your way through the file, alternatively you can click on the ENTRY box and enter the number of the entry (find this out using show) you want to cut, then press return. Once you have selected the entry you wish to cut click on CUT ENTRY and the entry will be removed from the record. ADD --- Add allows you to add entries to the file almost automatically. If the READ FROM SPECIFIC DIR flag is set in prefs you will be able to get the filer to read in and add to the record the contents of any individual directory you like simply by pointing and clicking. If the READ FROM SPECIFIC DIR flag is not set then the program will ask you to insert the next disk to be read into the nominated drive and when you do, will read its directory and add its contents to the file. This mode will only read in the main directories on the disk, if you want to interrogate deep directories, or hard disks etc. you should use READ FROM SPECIFIC DIR. If the READ FROM SPECIFIC DIR flag is set then the Filer will read in the current directory and display the name of any directories or volumes available on the screen. An up arrow and a down arrow icon will allow you to click your way through the available directories/volumes until you get to the one you want. You can now click on READ to read the contents of the directory shown at the bottom of the screen into the current The file. Alternatively, you can move one directory further into the directory by clicking on ACCEPT. The PARENT option allows you to move out one directory on the directory tree. The QUIT option returns you to the main menu. ***************************************************************************** I hope you find the program entertaining and potentially useful.
