** 2 pages PD/Shareware review / 956 words ** ** I want to use all the grabs if at all possible ** Joe v1.42e: HTML Editor ** On Reader Disk logo here ** Jerry Martin and Joe Connor get to grips with this first fully featured HTML editor for the Atari platform... ** JOE142.GIF here ** Joe, programmed by French author Pierre Tonthat (aka Rajah Lone/Queen Meka) is essentially a text editor with extensive macro features which are designed to help create web pages interactively using the CAB web browser using the OLGA protocol for semi-WYSIWYG editing. Joe features a modern GEM interface supporting optional colour icons, OLGA and drag-and-drop. It also supports the AV protocol, capable of sending commands to CAB, primarily to allow tiling the Joe and CAB windows using a simple menu option. HTML tags can be entered by simply selecting them from the series of comprehensive drop down menus - or entered directly like any other text editor if you prefer. All HTML code can be displayed in a different colour to the rest of the text, making it easy to follow your copy even amidst complex formatting commands. Normal text editors are fine for creating simple web pages but less intuitive tasks, such as creating tables, are not for the faint hearted. Joe offers a selection of modules, accessed by right-clicking and selecting from a pop-up menu, to handle these tasks and they can either be used interactively within Joe or as stand alone programs. Documentation is provided describing the custom protocol used to program Joe modules. Two stand-alone modules are bundled with the Joe distribution: ** UL ** * tag builder which takes care of all that information. * tag builder which can also send the image to an external viewer/editor for previewing or fine tuning. ** /UL ** All aspects of the HTML command can be controlled in a simple point-and-click environment and the resulting code pasted into the main text via a simple Drag&Drop action or via the clipboard. Exiting the module pastes the relevant code into the currently open HTML document within Joe ready for filling in. A further set of modules called Joe's Good Tricks has been released as shareware. This includes improved and tag creators along with some new modules, refer to the boxout for more details. Joe is a very promising application and should prove invaluable to many people. Block manipulation isn't perfect as yet, blocks being limited to line by line selection, and the clipboard commands are non standard. However, these are minor niggles, and any tool to help with HTML creation is more than welcome! ** boxout ** Overview of Joe modules Although Joe itself is Freeware the Joe modules, which also run as stand-alone applications, are shareware. JOE_IMG 1.1 tag generator. ** IMAGEMOD.GIF here ** Image tags in a flash. Files can be passed via Drag&Drop and text is automatic converted to HTML format for the ALT attribute. For example: ** NP on ** œ½ is converted to ALT="£©" ** NP off ** JOE_EMBED 1.0 tag generator. ** EMBEDMOV.GIF here ** Embed movies the easy way. This module accepts filenames via Drag&Drop and, with a suitable movie player installed (AniPlayer in this case) movies can be previewed. JOE_HR 1.0
tag generator. ** LINEMOD.GIF here ** Although horizontal rules are not too difficult to code manually this module makes it even easier - a preview option would be the icing on the cake. JOE_SND 1.0 ** SOUNDMOD.GIF here ** tag generator which supports the Netscape and Microsoft methods. Filenames can be received via Drag&Drop. JOE_HEAD 1.1 tag generator. ** HEADER.GIF here ** Automatic text to HTML for tag. Can receive text via Drag&Drop (only the first 65 characters), for the editable objects "Chain to", "Links" and "Meta". Double-click on the editable objects "Chain to" and "Links" displays the file selector and the resulting filename is inserted in the editable object and converted to a relative link if the module was called by Joe. JOE_TAB 1.0 <TABLE> tag generator. ** TABLE1_GIF here ** ** TABLE2.GIF here ** ** HEXCOLOR.GIF here ** This is a killer module which surpasses other table generators I've tried - no more graph paper required! Tables up to 16x16 cells can be created and each cell can be assigned its own horizontal/vertical alignment, width and background colour - using a simple hex colour selector. Cells can be merged to create ROWSPAN and COLSPAN attributes by left clicking the top left tile then [Shift]+left clicking the bottom right tile to select the desired cells then using the Paste button to complete the action. Each table cell can be assigned text via Drag&Drop or by pressing the Insert which displays the file selector. With BubbleGEM installed it's even possible to view the tile contents - very cool! ** /boxout ** ** product boxout ** Joe v1.42 Status: Joe itself is Postcardware, the modules in Joe's Good Tricks distribution are shareware and registration costs between FF50 and FF100 (œ5 to œ10) at your discretion.
