  Welcome to the WINDOWS version on DAMA ITALIANA! Comprehensive help
screens are provided when you run the program - also try the VIEW
command option to replay some of the demo problems on the disk.
  So, you what is DAMA ITALIANA and Italian draughts? Italian draughts is
a game that is particularly interesting to affeciados of the English game,
because it is so closely related. Indeed, when you look at the Italian
literature on it, you will see references to the 'Old fourteenth', and
other openings from the English game. Let us look at the rules, to see the
differences.
  The game is played with an 'inverted' board - ie. with the single corner
on the RIGHT BOTTOM of the board. The board is numbered from 1 in Black's
right-hand single corner to 32 at White's single corner. White takes the
first move in the game. These differences are of course purely technical,
and English draughts readers will be interested to learn that DAMA ITALIANA
offers the option to play with the English board layout and numbering. The
other rules are :-
  Men are NEVER allowed to capture Kings - otherwise if you can jump, YOU
MUST! When you have a choice of multiple jumps, you MUST take the option
that captures the most. When you have a choice of jumping the same number
of men with a King or Man, you MUST capture with the King. If a King has an
option of taking an equal number different ways, he MUST capture kings in
preference to men.
  In other words, you must jump the most WITH the most! Other than the
above rules, the moves of Men and Kings are the same as in the English
game. While opening play is similar to English draughts, the fact that
Kings cannot be captured by men makes the Kings much more powerful. I will
now give an illustrative problem, and describe DAMA ITALIANA.
  Consider the following postion - White is to play and win:-
   White:5,10,12,14,19,23,28     Black:1,4,15K,18,22,27K,32K
     (See diagram for problem 299 below..)
 How long does it take you to solve this? Well DAMA ITALIANA can solve it
in less than one second on a 486 PC!! Play continues -
  12-7, 27x20, 10-6, 32x23, 14-11, 23x14, 6-3, 15x6, 3x10x19x26, 1x10,
  26-22, 4x11, 23x13x6x15x24  - A complete wipe-out! Of course, DAMA
ITALIANA can solve other problems, of equal and greater complexity.

         Installing DAMA ITALIANA on WINDOWS.
	 ------------------------------------
  To install DAMA ITALIANA to run under windows, follow these steps:-
1)  Run windows, and select the GAMES group.
2)  Hold the ALT key down, and double-click the mouse at an empty
    position where you want DAMA ITALIANA to appear.
3)  The cursor will be in the DESCRIPTION box - type the name of the
    program - ie. DAMA ITALIANA.
4)  Now click the cursor on the COMMAND LINE box, and enter the path
    for DAMA ITALIANA - ie. C:\ITAL\ITAL52W.EXE  - if in doubt, use
    the BROWSE option.
5)  Now click on the CHANGE ICON box - you will be asked to select an icon
    from the Program Manager. Click OK on that, then enter the path
    for DAMA ITALIANA - ie.   C:\ITAL\ITAL.ICO    or use browse again.
6)  Click on OK, and you are ready to go!
