ASSASINATION BY FILM
by Eric Margolis 4 Jan 96

The film `Nixon' is riveting and dramatic, a sweeping
tragedy that recalls Eisenstein's epic, `Ivan the
Terrible.'

Oliver Stone's latest film may be entertaining, but
it's certainly not history, though desperately striving to be. This film
is a cocktail of fact, distortions, and outright lies,
so skilfully blended that many viewers - particularly
younger ones- will emerge from it intoxicated by Stone's
neo-marxist credo: America is an evil empire, run by a
conspiracy of Texas oil nazis, the CIA, and Wall Street
robber barons. .

I met President Nixon when I worked on his re-election
campaign as a Mideast policy advisor. I served in the army
during the Vietnam War, and suffered through the nightly TV
torture of Watergate.

The pill-popping, whisky swilling Nixon portrayed in Stone's
film is not Richard Nixon. It is a demonic, one-
dimensional, carton caricature worthy of 1950 Soviet
propaganda. A `Golem' conjured up out of Stone's twisted
psyche. Stone's occasional sympathy for the monster he
fatheres does not lessen the utter falseness, meanness, or
shocking dishonesty of the portrait

Ironically, while Nixon was hated by American communists and
leftists, abroad he was respected as the most skilful and
strongest of modern presidents -, particularly by the
communist leaders of China and the USSR.,

Stone's slanderous insinuations that Nixon was somehow
involved in the assassination of both Kennedys are bare-
faced lies. As are this celluloid character assassin's
assertions in his film, `JFK,' that President Lyndon Johnson
and the CIA conspired to kill the Kennedys. Luckily for
Stone, dead men can't sue.

Still, conspiracy buffs and many movie critics are eagerly
lapping up Stone's latest effluvia. Unfortunately, they
miss a real conspiracy: The 60-year war by Hollywood's
leftists against America. This is the real, subliminal
message of `Nixon.'

Nixon earned the bitter, undying hatred of America's liberal
elite because he built his early political career by
exposing communists in the media, Hollywood and government.
These first generation communists worshipped Stalin, a
tyrant who murdered four time more people than Hitler. They
were fair game, though Nixon's crusade was often self-
serving, and conducted during the intolerable excesses of
the odious Senator McCarthy.

The most notorious case involved Alger Hiss, a senior aide
to President Roosevelt. Nixon went after Hiss. The left
depicted Hiss - and spies Rosenberg - as martyrs. The
Hollywood and media left determined to be revenged on Nixon
for bringing down Hiss. Curiously, recent revelations from
Soviet files that Hiss and the Rosenbergs were, in fact,
communist spies have not lessened Nixon-hatred. For
Hollywood's left, Nixon epitomized everything they hated
about middle America's bourgeois values. Pat Nixon, a woman
of enormous courage and dignity, was singled out for
particularly vicious attack by the liberal media.

Hollywood's old Stalinists are long gone. A second
generation of Beverly Hills leftists - like Ed Asner and
Jack Lemmon, Norman Lear - are fading. But a third
generation, led by Stone, has emerged on stage. Stone
appears determined to wage a propaganda war against
despised, capitalist America, using film, the left's medium
of choice.

Having nearly monopolized media. Hollywood's entrenched
leftists preach Jeremiads to the nation about how deeply
corrupt and evil America has become. In the process, these
limousine liberals grow ever richer off the country whose
problems they help foster by nightly pumping televised
garbage into America's homes. One reason for the explosive
growth of the Internet is because this new medium gives
angry Americans a method of breaking Hollywood's
stranglehold on electronic information.

`Nixon' is merely the latest attack in the long, liberal
vendetta against America's middle class, symbolized by
Richard Nixon. It is high-calibre agitptop from those who
despise America, but love its money.

You may dress up a liar in artistic clothing. But he still
remains a liar.
