Delay Calculator v1.2E Carl Lofgren Arkov. 51 by 121 55 Johanneshov SWEDEN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Manual for v1.2E, last modified 21 may 1994. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INDEX 1) General Information 2) Shareware 3) About the Delay Calculations 4) About the Hz Calculations 5) About the BPM Calculations 6) Program/Accessory modes 7) Test equipment and programs 8) Bugs and restrictions 9) Registrations 10) Phuture developments 11) How you can contact me 1) General Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This program helps you with various calculations in different music situations. These calculations are not very hard to figure out by yourself (if you were listening to your math-teacher at school that will say) but when I make music, I want to make music. NOT doing calculations. Even how easy they might be. As you might have seen, this program is not the only which makes "music" calculations, but what makes this program different is : a) Shareware. Total cost: a stamp and a disk. b) VERY easy to handle. c) Direct support from the programmer. that will say, by me...:-) d) Very stable, on almost ANY setup. It won't make your computer go mental. e) You can use the program as BOTH an accessory, and as a program. Just change the extension. f) It doesn't use a lot of memory. g) It supports most resoultions. Besides, if YOU support the program, I will certainly continuing making updates. And I do have some plans for it. Read on. 2) Shareware ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Delay Calculator is NOT Public Domain. It's SHAREWARE. It costs one double sided disk to get registered (no name is alright!). Extremely expensive, don't you think? PLEASE show that shareware works. If you want the latest version please contact me and I'll tell you if there are any new versions in sight. When you register, please let me know your set-up, including all MIDI-related stuff, and where you found the program. This is version 1.2E ----- In what language the program is in. | | | | | |______ The number of the update. | |_______ The versionnumber. Currently, the program is available only in English. A version in French is under rethinking. I could also make a German version. Please let me know if you want one. Please read HISTORY.TXT for more information about all released versions. The program is divided into three main parts. a) The Delay Calculator b) The Hertz Calculator c) The BPM Calculator 3) Delay Calculator ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What it does: As your brilliant track is going in a specfied tempo (in BPM), the delay is also set in a tempo (but in mS). What this part actually do is converting BPM to mS. You can make the delay bounce in right tempo but with some more swing by using the different styles. Try them out, and you'll hear which ones you like and which one's you don't. How you do it: Just enter the tempo in the BPM box. And press "Calculate" or press and a box will pop up with the delay values. If you want to use a style, select the desired style ("Swing" for example) and then do the same thing as above. Press "Calculate" in other words. 4) Hertz Calculator ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What it does: This function converts the BPM to Hertz. This is VERY useful if you own a synthesizer were you set -for example- the LFO in Hertz. I know only one synth that does that, and that is the Kurzweil K2000. Yes. I own this monster. And I'm very happy that I do. NOTE! That the this function will not be affected by the style setting. I might make it so, but... well. The day I have time I might do that. How you do it: Just enter the tempo in the BPM box, and then press the "Hz" button, and a box will show with some acceptable values. 5) BPM Calculator ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What it does: You can use this function when you want to figure out the tempo of a track, a sampled beat,an acapella or whatever it could be. How you do it: After you have pressed the OK button, the program will start recording your input. Hit the space-bar for each beat. The best way to get the best result, is to play the track (or what it could be) and hitting the space-bar as the track plays. Usually 8 hits should be perfectly enough, but the more beats you are entering the better result. I have put a maximum limit to 50 beats. Press ESC whenever you want to stop, or exit to the main menu. 6) The program will work as an accessory and as a program ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The program works both as an accessory (ACC), and as a program (PRG). Just change the extension. 7) Test equipment and programs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It has been tested on following models : STFM (TOS 1.02/1MB), STe (TOS 1.062/2MB), Mega ST (TOS 2.06/4MB), TT (TOS 3.06/8MB with or without Fast-RAM), Falcon030 (TOS 4.02/14MB). It has also been tested together with follwing programs : Name : Compability : ------------------------------------ 1ST Word Plus v3.10 No problems. Avalon v2.0 No problems. Cubase v2.0 No problems. I use it almost every day. DarkLord v3.10 Some minor bugs. When having the DarkLord window open, and using the Calculator on top of it, it can happen that the mouse- pointer disappear! Strange indeed. I'll have to check with the programmer of DarkLord. Otherwise. It work without any problems. Delay Calc. v1.1E Yes. Incredible, isn't it? No compability programs with itself. Gembench v3.40 No problems. K4-Editor by Geerdes PROBLEMS! But NOT caused by my Delay Calc. Same problems happens with the excellent screen-savers Before Dawn and DarkLord. The graphics are not correct re-drawn. MIDI Quest Jr. v2.16 No problems. But you can't access any accessories within MIDI Quest Jr. It has got an GUI of it's own, unfortunately. NVDI v2.50 No problems. X-oR v1.12 No problems. 8) Known bugs / restrictions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It will NOT work in ST-Low or in TT-Low. And there will probably be no support for those resolutions either. Who run a sequencer in Low-resolution? If you have for ex. 4 windowns open on the desktop and you open DC as an accessory, it MIGHT happen that some fragments of the dialogs will stay in the windows for a while. When you exit everything will be normal again. I don't see this as any serious problem, and for the moment I use my energy to deal with other things. As you might notice the boxes will update VERY slow when running another program in the background (such as Cubase). Please try to avoid entering the menubar while the boxes are updating. This COULD lead to problems (not very serious problems, but anyway). One way to avoid this is to get NVDI. It's probably the best screen accelerator. It's also recommended by Steinberg themselves. NOTE! I won't take ANY responsibility if my program will cause the system to crash, and important material disapperars. It shouldn't be possible, as the program has been tested very carefully by many good beta-testers, and they all say that the program behaves well in terms of releasing memory and usage of GEM. 9) Following people have been kind enough to register ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Mats Orveland, Sweden. 2. Alex Camanini, Italy. 10) Phuture plans ---------------------------------------------------------------------- o Hz-calculation will be controllable by the Delay-sort. o Note-representation of the delay. o A Delay Creator, which will allow you to use your OWN beloved delay-lines. 11) How you can contact me: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mail : Carl Lofgren, Arkov. 51, 121 55 Johanneshov SWEDEN FidoNet: Carl Lofgren 2:201/303 (Irata BBS) InterNet: carl@proxxi.uf.se Carl.Lofgren@stix.pcs.se PLEASE NOTE MY NEW ADDRESS. I've moved. If you have any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, or just want a chat, drop me a line. I WILL reply to everyone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to thank Ronald Andersson for his valuable help, when de-bugging my way of using GEM. Michael Lundgren (the creator of NeoCom, the BEST ANSI comms-program so far) for the GEM routines, and finally my cat -Hobbe- for the reason that he always have to walk on my synths and sleep on my Atari.
