Some of the tones may or may not still be applicable depending on what type of switching system is being used in your city. Through the years, phreaks have used various methods of reproducing blue box tones to obtain FREE long-distance calls! Just some of the devices used are: piano's, organs, Casio brand musical keyboards, tape recordings of actual bluebox tones, computer pgms. for home computers to generate the tones, whistles from Capt'n Crunch cereal to produce the 2600 Hz. etc. Some can even whistle 2600 Hz. with their mouths to break the line to obtain a free call! The KP1 is used as a start signal on a national call. The KP2 is used as a start signal on an international call. The ST stands for Start Transmission and KP stands for KeyPulse. A bluebox operator first dials an 800 number and when it begins to ring, he presses 2600 hz and then punches out his number on the bluebox in the format of KP + XXX-XXX-XXXX + ST. On the normal Touchtone keypad, there are the basic 0-9, plus the # and *. There can also be modifications to a touchtone phone to make it produce the AUTOVON tones. These four tones are usually labeled as A, B, C, and D. These four tones can be used to obtain free long distance also. The four keys are refered to as follows: A-Flash B-Flash Override Priority C-Priority Connection and D-Priority Override. Pink noize is a masked 2600 Hz tone composed of 2600 Hz and 3000-3700 Hz tones mixed. This is used to avoid detection of 2600 Hz on the line by blue box detection schemes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PayFone Tonez Coin Collect - 700 & 1100 Hz tones mixed Coin Return -- 1100 & 1700 Hz tones mixed Ringback ----- 700 & 1700 Hz tones mixed Dime Tone ---- Composed of two beeps at 5-8.5 pps (each beep is 66 ms duration and 66 ms pause) pps = pulses per second Nickel Tone -- Composed of one beep at 5-8.5 pps (the beep is 66ms duration) Quarter Tone - composed of five beeps at 12-17 pps (five beeps at 33 ms duration each & 33 ms pause between each The beeps are composed of 2200 & 1700 Hz tones mixed. On older phones such as the 3 slot coin phones the nickel tone is 1 bell (1050 & 1100 Hz mixed) the dime tone is 2 bells and the quarter tone is 1 gong (800 Hz tone) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Tones Dial tone -------------- 350 & 440 Hz tones mixed Busy signal ------------ 620 & 440 Hz mixed (on for 1/2 sec off for 1/2 sec) Attention Signal ------- 1400, 2060, 2450 & 2600 Hz all mixed Ring ------------------- 440 & 480 Hz tones mixed TASI Locking Frequency - 1850 Hz tone used on satallite calls overseas Decimonic Ring --------- 20, 30, 40, 50 Hz mixed Harmonic Ring ---------- 16 2/3, 25, 33 1/3, & 50 Hz mixed Synchromonic ----------- 20, 30, 42, & 54 Hz tones mixed These type of rings cannot be heard by you, but the switching office sends the signals to activate the diffrent types of ringing sounds.
