Move the cursor to the X below and type in this paragraph. Don't press the Enter key, just keep typing. The object is to see how the normal typing works. X Now move the cursor to this X and press Ctrl \. This command splits a line. Now press Ctrl J. The line has been rejoined. Split the line again, but this time press the Del key. The Del key will reorganize the paragraph. NOTE: As you progress through this file, press the PgDn key when you need to see more text. Move the cursor to this X, press the Ins key, and then press the period 10 times. Now press the Backspace key 10 times. Notice how the paragraph moves with these actions. Turn off the Insert mode by pressing the Ins key again. Notice that the "I" disappears from the status area at the top of your screen. REFORMATTING A PARAGRAPH This paragraph has purposely been messed up so that you may see the effects of using Ctrl R, the reformat command. Move the cursor anywhere within this paragraph and press Ctrl R. Notice that after reformatting a paragraph, the cursor moves to the beginning of the next paragraph in case you should want to reformat that paragraph as well. ERASING and DELETING LINES - "Whoops" Move the cursor to the X on the line below and then press F6. This action erases text below and X xxx yyy zzz www fffff gggg hhhh kkkk to the right of the cursor. Now press Ctrl W to bring back the line. Now press F5 to delete the modified line. HIGHLIGHTING - COPYING and MOVING The other basics of editing a file are copying and moving. PC-Type has a very wide assortment of these options, but only the most basic ones will be shown here. Move the cursor to the X below and press Ctrl L. Then move the cursor -W- to the Y below and press Ctrl L again. You have now "highlighted" -X- a text area with the simplest highlight type. This area is now -Y- marked for further action. First we will try to copy. Move the cursor to the Z below and then press Ctrl C. Next press Ctrl D (delete the highlight). -Z- Now try a move. Highlight the X and Y lines again with Ctrl L's, move the cursor to the W line above, and press Ctrl M. Things should now be where they were at the beginning. These are the simplest moves and copies. Of course you can move words, sentences, and even blocks of text surrounded by more text. PRINTING Now let's attempt to print this file. Position the file so the line below is at the top of your screen. Press F2 - select (P)rint. Press Enter to activate the output field. Press F6 and then type JUNK and press Enter. Move the highlight to the "Amount to print:" line and press Enter until the selection "ALL" appears. (Arrow keys move highlight) You are now ready to print this file to the disk file JUNK. (Normally you would print to LPT1, the parallel printer port.) Press F10 and begin the print. Press PgDn. QUITTING / SAVING You have by now become adept at quitting a file. Press F4 again, but this time when asked "Are you sure?" press the N key. You are brought back to here. Now let's save this file under a different name - JUNK.PCT. Press F9 to save the file. The cursor will move to the Command Line and the filespec will be displayed. Erase the line with F6, type JUNK.PCT and press the Enter key. Since the .PCT extension implies that this will be a document type file, you are asked to enter a file reminder. Type "junk file made from SAMPLE.TXT" and press Enter.
