I've included the full field names in this listing for convenience. Field names are ALL CAPS in my original Superbase files. In the COMPANY file: 1) Note that City and State/Province are combined in one field with separating comma, etc. 2) Mail code is generally the US Zip code, but may also be a foreign mail code (i.e. Canada, UK, etc.) 3) Country is void for U.S.A.; otherwise indicates appropriate country with all uppercase letters. 4) Telephone numbers include separating dashes where possible. Foreign phone numbers may be more compacted, with or without country codes. Any text in this field is uppercase. 5) One character flag fields for major product catagories attempt to indicate what sort of products that company produces: Software System Hardware (complete systems) Expansion Hardware (add-in boards & hardware) Miscellaneous Hardware (other hardware) Accessories (including supplies, media, cases, etc.) Peripherals (external hardware or controllers) Books/Magazines/Videos (publications, training materials, etc.) 6) One character Shareware Developer flag indicates the company or author produces shareware, possibly in addition to regular commercial products. This is now the letter W or a space. 7) Company_ID is a fixed length 6 digit serial number assigned as companies are entered in the database, one unique number per company. If a given company is deleted from the database for any reason, the number is reused for the next new company added. This is a particular requirement to keep the online database provided via PC-Link in sync with the master database at Baker Enterprises, as that database can be maintained via partial updates using these numbers. In the ALTADDR file: 1) Basic address/phone/email information uses the same format as in the main company record. 2) Additional COMMENTS field may provide additional information about the contents of the data in the record - i.e. Technical Support, Regional Sales Office, BBS data speeds, etc. In the COMMENTS file: 1) These are generally comments relating to the company, or some other general comment concerning the company's products. They are generally included in my output at the start of the product information. 2) The Company Pointer in these records is the corresponding 6-digit Company ID to link the comments & notes to the company records. In the PRODUCT file: 1) The Product Name field provides the product name first, followed by a brief description or keywords with a separating dash Example: "Product Name - description or keywords" 2) Products entries are generally listed in alphabetical order in my other outputs from this database. The informational comments & notes records generally appear first in my text product listings (with the space-colon prefixes). 3) The Company Pointer in these records is the corresponding 6-digit Company ID to link the product records to the company records. 4) An unique 6-digit product serial number has been added to allow linking product coding information from an external set of files. In the PRODINDX file: 1) There are only two fields in each record that link a single product type code to a single product. Multiple product code records may exist for each product record. Uncatagorized products have no corresponding records in this file. 2) The Product Pointer in these records is the corresponding 6-digit Product ID to link the product type code to the product record. 3) The Product Code Pointer in these records is the corresponding 15-character Product Code to link the descriptive text of the product type to the product record. Searching on this index field allows finding products from all companies within a selected product type or family. In the PRODCODE file: 1) There are only two fields in each record that link a single product type code to its text description. Each code must be unique. 2) Product types and codes are currently being expanded and may be subject to change. The current coding structure allows adding new codes anywhere within the structure while maintaining the desired grouping. The coding also allows searching on any substring of a given code and finding all included subgroupings of similar products. 3) Product type descriptions include a common type prefix that identifies the major category for easy identification and to help reduce the amount of text required within the remainder of the description. This also helps group the descriptions for added convenience when listed in order for search selection. This is easily changed if there are any suggestions when the user interface software is designed. Robert Baker BAKER ENTERPRISES 20 Ferro Drive Sewell, NJ 08080 Voice: 609-582-9203 Fax: 609-582-9204
