[ Meriadoc ] - Beginning - 1) INTRO (understanding demos, defined, history/orgin, purpose) .úÄÍð[ Definition of 'the demo scene' ]ðÍÄú. There are some 'scenes' in the world of computers. One of them is the 'demo-scene'. It is a big group of people who try to do something creative with computers. Their main goal is to make nicer things than others do. There are people drawing pictures, people making music, and people writing (new) programs. When you see a demo for the first time, you might say, WHY ? Why is a demo made, why are all these things done ? It's just another hobby. Okay, it is something different than keeping birds or driving a nice car, or wandering in nature, or hanging out everywhere in weekends, but it still is a hobby. There are people who like computers that much, that they even want to know what's in it, and how to handle that. That's not different from people who like driving a car, but who also want to know whats under the surface. There are people who want to know the details or a car's engine, and there are people who want to know how a computer works.. There are also people who want to create music, but not in a band. They want to create music and want to hear that at once. A computer is an outcome. You use a computer to create music, and you can even release it yourself. Some people like drawing, but they are bored by pencils and paper, so they create things on a computer. Mostly that people also know something more about computers than 'usual' users. .úÄÍð[ History/origin ]ðÍÄú. When computer art started, I don't know. I think is was before I was born, a little 20 years ago. It started on small computers, like the Commodore 64. That really is a great computer for it's time, but I will talk about that later. The people that I described above sometimes come together. Programmers want to do something more than only programming, they want(ed) to have graphics and music included. That's how DEMOS came into birth.. More I don't know to say about origin. 2) CULTURE/SCENE (profile, motivations, groups, PC, AMIGA, C64, misc) .úÄÍð[ Profile ]ðÍÄú. I described some kind of people above. There are different people in 'the scene', with different tasks: - Coders are making programs and effects. In the scene, everything is based on a graphical output of data. It always has to look nice. At the moment almost everything is 3D. - Musicians make music. (hey, that sounds like logic) In a demo there is (almost) always music included. - Graphics artists make nice looking pictures. This is one of the art aspects that has to be in a demo. A picture is a moment of relaxation. - Organisers are people who keep a group together, or who organise a so called 'party'. Usually these four different people are in one group. They create computer art with the four of them, and usually individually too.. The age of scene-people differences from approx. 16 till approx. 25 years. Younger people are (usually) not devellopped enough, and older people say they are wiser, and get a job and/or a wife and children. I don't like to say it, but there are (almost) no girls in the scene. At the last party I was, there were in total 6 girls, and three of them were member of a group. One other was the sister of one of the organisers, on other was the girlfriend of a good friend of mine, last but not least was his sister (and would become my girlfriend a few days later). Perhaps that there will come more girls in the scene in future, because computers now spread so much everywhere. I really would like that, but I doubt about it. A pity... .úÄÍð[ Systems ]ðÍÄú. As there are various types of computers, there are various scenes for all of them. The most important scenes are: The Amiga-scene The PC-scene and the C64-scene. The first one is (IMO) the most important, however I am in the second one. The amiga is an ART-computer. It's processor is relatively easy to code and understand, and the amiga has it's build-in Video-processor that is really good. They also have an build-in sounddevice.. This scene is the most develloped one, because the AMIGA was born in 1985, and for it's time, the most powerfull computer. I think that the amiga-scene has started well in late 80's, because then the computer became cheaper, and was far much better for demos etc. than the pc at the time. Because the AMIGA was a commodore product, it was a sort of follow-up from the C64. The scene started with the C64, the first computer which was capable of doing art on.. Just the last few years the pc-scene is coming up. This is because the PC is now better than the AMIGA. The standard amiga has a slower processor, a (far) much better video device but a less good soundcard. The PC-standard is changed much the last few years, and because the processor is more powerfull, the effects are more beautiful.. The PC is a computer with a difficult processor. The 80x86's are not easy to understand, and they have technical differences between the MC680x0 from the AMIGA. The Commodore 64 -scene is dying slowly. The computer now is almost fifteen years old. For it's time (I had one 10 years ago), it was the greatest computer ever made. It had 3 channels of sythesizer sound, 1 channel of sampled sound, a graphical video interface, and a rather nice processor. It is a small computer, compared with pc's, but there are freaks on that computer who can do things that you cannot imagine. Real freaks do know the meaning of very one of the 65536 bytes, and if necessary, they even know all the bits... And, don't forget, the follow-up processor of the C64 is still in use. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is an advanced C64! The old Nintendo is actually a (little extended) C64... But, this scene is dying out. The freaks of the early days (the scene started with the c64) are now grown up people with children and a job and so on.. For them the scene is just a rememberence. The computer is not made anymore, and to get a C64 is becoming less easy than getting a PC. .úÄÍð[ Parties ]ðÍÄú. A party is the time and place that computer freaks from an entire continent come together. The last party I've been to was Somewhere In Holland '95. It was the hottest weekend in Holland, but that didn't matter for many people to come. There were people form the entire Europe. (Sweden as upper north, Hungary as most southly).. In Europe there are the most freaks, all together some 3000 or 4000. The big parties are 'Assembly' (now taking place), and The Party in Denmark.. A party is ment for different things. First it is a meeting point for all people who want to come in the scene (becoming a coder, musician or graphics artist). But it also is a place where productions are shown. Usually that takes place in competitions. The public is the judge. There are voting-disks, spread at the entrance, and all voters decide who is the best. This way your work always is judged by people who know things. -Coders always look at the way something works, is programmed. They also look at the design of the product. Does it look good. -The graphicers look most at how the graphics (gfx) are. Coders and graphicers have different meanings about both of them. A coder might think an effect is easy (to code), a graphicer (who doesn't always know that much of coding) might think that effect nice just because of it's colors. (Just an example..) -Musicians have another meaning on both of that. So one gets a jury of many people who all have their opinions. Usually that is a fair way of handling things.. There are competitions on the individual arts: code: 4k-intro (in max. 4096 bytes doing as much as possible) (usually pc-only) music: music compo (1Mb max, 3-6 min. max) gfx: Graphics (not scanned or calculated) and there are competitions on these alltogether: AMIGA 40k-intro (Gfx/music/code in 40960 bytes max) PC-intro (gfx/music/code in 65536 max) AMIGA Demo (gfx/music/code in 1 amiga DD (880kb) max) PC Demo (gfx/music/code in usually 1 disk with compression)
