README2 for CLR_TABL.LZH May 1, 1993 User to User TIP File ===================== Color Conversion and K (Gray) Tables for Calamus SL This archive contains the following files: CLR_TABL.CDK - Reference version of the PC_168 color tables from the "Color Conversion" U2U TIP File CLR_WSHT.CDK - A worksheet for creating and organizing color tables. K_TABL .CDK - All 256 possible K values with raster samples. K_ALL256.CFT - A corrected 256 K .CFT for use with the above table. K_ALL256.CFT should be copied to the COLOR subdirectory of your Calamus SL folder, or wherever you normally keep your color lists. This is the companion file to CLR_CONV.LZH, but neither is absolutely necessary for the other to use. ************************************************************************* Oh, NO! Not another gray scale chart! I can hear it now :-) Yes, folks I've decided to add to the confusion by tossing Yet Another Grayscale (YAG) list into the ring. Why, you ask? A few of the previously uploaded files contained partial or conflicting gray (K) lists. I have also noticed that there has not been a 'standard' for what values are assigned to the lists, i.e., some lists start counting at #0 for 0% K, while others start at #1 or even #255. I have no less than 12 "K" lists in my color folder, including many that have errors. Time to clean house and establish some common ground. This list was compliled to: a) assign standard numbers (names) to all the possible values; b) to align 50.2% (the closest SL gets to 50%) with the actual 50.2% displayed raster pattern, and 3) for testing with the upcoming Raster Generator U2U. Still trying to match that Calamus 1.09 "look" in your printouts? Use the K table to test your Raster Generator settings. Change the gray columns' (they are individual raster frames grouped together) line-screen values. Hints: Try starting at around 18 LPCM and work up. The middle grays work better at different LPCMs than the lighter and darker values. Have fun! These lists, tables and worksheets were partially inspired by that much delayed attempt at writing a RasGen tutorial. 'Cracking' the Raster Generator's secrets has become an occupation in itself. :-) Feedback on style and content is always welcome :-) Doug Walter (D.WALTER7)
