About GE Mail to FAX Service ============================ What is GE Mail to FAX Service? ------------------------------- GE Mail to FAX Service is a feature of the GE Mail system which enables you to send GE Mail messages to facsimile machines anywhere in the world. The recipient does not have to be a GEnie subscriber or have an acquaintance with GE Mail or its commands. At this time GE Mail to FAX Service supports only OUTBOUND messages - that is, you may only send electronic mail message destined to a FAX machine. There is currently no provision for RECEIVING messages from FAX machines into GE Mail. If you are acquainted with the GE Mail system, GE Mail to FAX Service should be easy for you to use. Messages may be sent either through the TTY front end provided on page 205 or from GE Mail Command Mode. For instructions on sending a GE Mail-to-FAX message, select item #4 - GE Mail to FAX Service Instructions" on page 205. Receiving machines must be Group III Fax terminals which conform to CCITT standards. Group III Fax machines are the prevalent Fax machine in use today. It is very likely that a Fax machine used in Fax-to-Fax mode will be compatible with GE Mail to FAX Service. While it is GE's intent to deliver to all Group III Fax machines, there may be instances when GE Mail to FAX Service will not be able to deliver to certain models of Fax machines. Non-delivery status messages are generated to the sender at any time GE Mail to FAX Service is unable to deliver your message. What is Needed to Send a Message? --------------------------------- Other than your GEnie account the only thing you need to send a GE Mail to FAX Service message is the "address" of the recipient's Fax machine (e.g., the machine's complete telephone number - including country code, city code, exchange and extension). GE Mail to FAX Service uses the same country code as international direct dial long distance telephone calling. You can review a list of country codes by selection item #3 - GE Mail to FAX Country Codes and Zones - on page 205. You can also search for a country code while addressing your Fax-bound message. About Message Delivery ---------------------- GEnie will attempt to deliver your GE Mail to FAX Service message as soon as possible - usually within 30 minutes of the time you created the message. There are many variables which may affect the time required to deliver your message. These include: o The volume of Fax-bound traffic in the GE Mail to FAX Service system o Availability of the receiving Fax machine (e.g., the machine may be busy, out of paper, power turned off, etc.) o Quality of phone service in the area of the receiving machine If the initial attempt to deliver the Fax message is unsuccessful, GE Mail to FAX Service will retry delivery to the receiving Fax machine for a two-hour period. If at that time the transmission still has not been successful, the session will be terminated and a nondelivery notice will be sent to the originator of the message in GE Mail. Need More Help? --------------- If you need help using the GE Mail system or the GE Mail to FAX Service capability, you can call the Client Services division of GEnie from anywhere in the United States or Canada at: 1-800-638-9636 If you're calling from outside the United States or Canada, you may contact Client Services at: 1-301-251-6475 Note - If you subscribe to GEnie through one of our distributors, please contact the distributor's Client Service operation for further assistance. GE Mail to FAX Service Billing ------------------------------ GE Mail to FAX Service adders will be posted to your account at least once a month. FAX charges will be incurred regardless and independent of the menu the FAX message originated from. GE Mail to FAX Service Rate Adder ================================= The adder for a message sent via GE Mail to FAX Service is based on the destination zone and the size of the message being transmitted. The size of the message is computed by number of pages in the message, not by the number of characters. This provides you with the opportunity to save significantly by packing a "page" with the maximum number of characters permitted. The "zone" of the recipient has been determined by dividing the world into six areas. Both the size of a FAX "page" and the six worldwide zones are explained further below. The GE Mail to FAX Service "Page" --------------------------------- Each GE Mail to FAX Service message consists of a graphic GE Mail to FAX logo, the 'header' information normally included in a GE Mail message (e.g., "TO:", "CC:", "Sub:", date/time of message creation, etc.), the text of the message and an "END OF MESSAGE" marker. In addition to the header information, each message delivered to a Fax machine includes a "Page X of X" page count marker. This provides the recipient with the information needed to determine if the entire message was received successfully. The first page of each GE Mail to FAX Service message consists of a maximum of 56 lines of text including the system-generated header information. Assuming a "standard" message with an ATTN line, Item Number, one "TO:" recipient, one "CC:" recipient and a"Subject:", leaving approximately 40 lines available for message text on the first page. Note - adding additional "TO:" or "CC:" addrsses to your message can significantly change the text capacity of your first page. Each additional page of a GE Mail to FAX Service message provides 63 lines of text including the page numbering header. This results in a maximum of 61 lines of text per additional page available to you. Note, including formfeeds in the text of a message sent via GE Mail to FAX may generate additional FAX pages even if there is no text on that page. Normally GEnie encourages its members to keep GE Mail messages under 80 characters per line to improve readability by the recipient. However, GE Mail to FAX Service allows you to take advantage of GE Mail's ability to extend each line up to a maximum of 156 characters. If any line in your message exceed 80 characters, GE Mail to FAX Service will automatically reduce the text being transmitted so it will still fit on a standard page width. Taking advantage of the automatic compression of message text is a good way to save by using GE Mail to FAX Service. It is important to note, however, that many FAX machines do not reproduce compressions well. So GEnie recommends that you do not exceed 132 characters per line in a FAX-bound message. GE Mail to FAX Service Zones and Adders --------------------------------------- GEnie has divided the world into geographic regions for the purpose of computing the adder applicable for each GE Mail to FAX Service page. The zones and adder per page/per zone are indicated below. These are in addition to all otherwise applicable usage charges. NORTH AMERICA ZONE (NA) $ .85 per page Canada, Mexico, United States of America and Puerto Rico SOUTH AMERICA ZONE (SA) $5.40 per page Brazil EUROPE ZONE (EU) $2.50 per page Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland (Republic of), Italy, Lichenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom of Great Britain and NorthernIreland ASIA/PACIFIC ZONE (AP) $3.00 per page Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea (Republic of), Malaysia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan (Republic of China), Thailand AFRICA/MIDDLE EAST ZONE (AM) $5.40 per page Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia REST OF WORLD (ROW) $5.40 per page Countries not listed in the above zones. INMARSAT $21.00 per page Ships at sea via satellite The GE Mail to FAX Service adders which will be billed can be determined by multiplying the number of FAX pages by the destination zone FAX rate as indicated above. Please select item #3 - GE Mail to FAX Country Codes & Zones - for a list of the individual countries included in each of the above zones.
