Exchange Scanning is LEGAL as long as it's done during
business hours and is random, not sequential. BC Tel says
so on page 23 of its 1998 phone book! And other GTE-owned
telcos including GTE itself have the identical policy. This
scan has the proof!

Here's how an enterprising BBS user sent me a FREE stamp...
Note the vertical orientation of this envelope. It's not
really an envelope, but a pouch! He wrote the address in the
vertical orientation and placed the stamp in the right corner,
and it totally confused the sorting equipment which expects
all envelopes to be horizontal! Net result: A misplaced
cancellation and a free, unblemished stamp I can steam off
at my leisure. Try it!
