The consequences of this follow, as well as a brief history of the number... WHAT: 954-5100 CODE: 222 ACCESS: WORLDWIDE (The FOOLS!) OWNER: Health and Welfare Canada LOCATION: Tunney's Pasture HISTORY ------- Around 10 months ago, an ingenious local decided to tone-lok the 954 prefix and look for "interesting" return codes. Whammo! He hits the jackpot in the 954 prefix, as over 150 numbers come back tagged as "specials". One of the first on the list was 954-5100. So the next step was to determine what kind of special it was. It turned out that if a code was supplied (in this case 222 (DUH!!!!))an outside line was accessed that you could dial thru, with access to WORLDWIDE phone destinations, without the dialer being billed for the call (Ie. FREE LD FOLKS!) The code stayed up and the pirates kept calling and calling and calling, UNTIL NOW... WHAT HAPPENED??? ---------------- First, some VERIFIED 954-5100 Statistics!!! (Thanx to my Bud at Bell!) Number: 954-5100 Number of calls made: Unknown Cost of calls made: $89000.00 (oh YES!!!!) Number of local numbers LOGGED: 18 (Hmmmm Wonder who???) Number of locals BUSTED: 2 Number of Locals BACK-BILLED: 3 SO FAR Number of Months 954 LOGGED: 9 MONTHS OK... 5100 has been monitored for the last 9 months in order to build "strong" cases against abusers of the line. 18 locals have at one time or another logged into and abused the line, myself included. We abused that line to the tune of 90 GRAND! As of last night, 2 locals have been busted, and rumors are flying as to who they are. We don't currently know who was busted, but the RC's raided 2 places and grabbed equipment etc. 3 locals have been BACK-BILLED to date, but these seem to be aimed at the heavy users of the line. If you used it less than 10 times, don't worry about it, as they are after bigger fish. The line is now dead (DUH!!!!). If you call it, you wil get a ring ring ring ring ring ring... no answer. So the 954 bonanza has come to an end... OR HAS IT??? :) WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT??? --------------------------- Well what can you do about it?
