Ham Club Public Relations and Public Information. Each club should have at least one individual charged with Public Relations and Public Information. Channel all PR PI items through that individual whenever possible. Help him/her whenever possible. Advertise your club meetings, invite newcomers and interested individuals to come and then MAKE THEM FEEL WELCOME (walk up to strangers and say 'hi')! Post notices in schools and in the local papers. See the Basic Publicity sheet for ideas and the appendix for sample copy. Encourage Elmerism. Announce all your club activities with hometown newspapers and radio stations. Review some of the publications at a local newsstand for papers that frequently list club news and activities. You may want to make an initial call to the newspaper, radio station, cable TV company, and TV station to ask the preferred form and style of these announcements (mail, phone, etc.). This includes routine club meeting listings, election results, classes, exam sessions, program announcement and reviews of meeting speakers and other items. Almost every activity your club participates in can be the "meat" of a mention in a "community calendar", schedule of events or as a local story in local media. A Cable TV company or TV station just might want to send a crew to cover an interesting "guest speaker" or demonstration at you club meeting or convention. Or they may want to come and do a brief story on your Field Day, Contest activity, Drill, Simulated Emergency, Actual Emergency, Public Service Communication participation and etc. They won't find out about your activities unless YOU tell them. The impression your club members make when they appear in public is also important. When they represent your club (and our hobby) they should always keep in mind how things look to the public. Dress neatly, display the words Amateur Radio or Ham Radio prominently, politely answer questions, and basically consider yourselves "ambassadors" of Ham Radio. Be sure to list your club, classes, exam schedules with known groups and publications that maintain such lists. Don't keep your activities a secret!
