Max will be there from Jan. 8-16. Max has indicated that he is active on AO-13 on modes B and J. Max stresses that his objectives for bringing satellite equipment on this "DX-pedition" are severalfold: (1) Activation of a new country via satellite (2) Introduction of AO-13 satellite communications to a wide audience in conjunction with this "DX-pedition" (3) To demonstrate the potential of a portable OSCAR station for emergency communications So listen for Max, XE1XA, as he operates on as XF4L and work some excellent "DX" via AMSAT-OSCAR 13. /EX SB ALL @ AMSAT $ANS-014.03 CALL FOR PAPERS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 014.03 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD JANUARY 14, 1989 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT AMSAT-NA News Letter To Debut In Febuary; Papers And Articles Being Solicted With Amateur Satellite Report (ASR) being replace after issue #188, the new AMSAT-NA Newsletter will make its debut in late Febuary. THIS BBS: This BBS will be shut down SUNDAYS from about 1730UTC untill 1900UTC due to RFI troubles. I presently help WD0HHU Dave with the 20mtr AMSAT NET during this time period. When I XMIT on HF the board is very eradict and in an effort to prevent disconnections to the users I thought it best to just turn the BBS off. I am sorry for any inconvience to you the users. The 20mtr AMSAT NET conviens at 1730 UTC @ 14.282+/- QRM the first 1 1/2 hrs is informal and you are most welcome to check in to say Hi or field questions. Thank you 73 Mike WD0GML SB ALL @ AMSAT $ANS-013.01 TO ALL PACKET STATIONS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 013.01 FROM THE QTH OF WD0HHU LITTLETON, CO JANUARY 13, 1989 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT A New Policy On AMSAT News Service (ANS) Bulletins Because of the length of AMSAT News Service Bulletins on January 7, 1989, (ANS-007), a new policy has been adopted by AMSAT-NA to reduce the size of the ANS Bulletins. In the future ANS Bulletins will be shorter, more topical, with the emphasis on brevity. AMSAT News Service Director, Dave Cowdin, WD0HHU, apologizes to all packet stations who found last weeks ANS Bulletins "choking" their packet etworks. In the future, only timely and "user-important" information will make up the content of the ANS Bulletins. Topics which warrant more than a paragraph and are not of immediate importance to the OSCAR satellite users will appear in the new AMSAT-NA Newsletter. This new publication will commence next month. It is hoped that this one bad mistake caused by WD0HHU's directorship of the ANS will not cause all packet station to shun ANS Bulletins in the future. AMSAT-NA appreciates all packet stations who carry our Bulletins and provide them to whomever wishes to read them. AMSAT-NA wants you to know that you perform a vital service for us and hope that you will continue to provide ANS Bulletins on a weekly basis. /EX BERING BRIDGE: Following packet interchanges with UA3CR and a long phone conversation with Paul Shurke (American Expedition Leader) I now have a wealth of detail on the BERING BRIDGE dogsled expedition from Russia to Alaska via the Bering Straits. Paul was a member of the Steger North Polar Dogsled Expedition along with Richard Weber, who, you remember was Canadian Team Leader for the Transpolar Skitrek. Bering Bridge is a 1200 mile or so journey along the Soviet coastline across to the border and down the coast of the Seward Penninsula of Alaska. Six Russians (including Leader Dimitri Shparo) and six Americans comprise the group. Three of the Russians are Eskimos and also three of the Americans. They have relatives on each others side of the border and will be visiting them as the team calls on 15 Soviet native villages and 15 American native villages. Either at the border or at the conclusion of the trip the Soviet Gand U.S. government will sign a treaty opening the border to visits & trade by the native populations. The border has been sealed since the advent of the "cold war". THERE APPEARS TO BE LITTLE OR NO AMATEUR RADIO INVOLVEMENT AT LEAST IN THE AMERICAN ARRANGEMENTS BUT LEO SEEMED TO BE INDICATING THEIR WOULD BE ON THE SOVIET SIDE. MORE LATER AFTER I TALK WITH THE AMMERICAN COMMUNICATIONS CHIEF. Rich, N8IWJ PS: After an Alaskan phone conversation this eve I have discovered that there is U.S. ham involvement and that details are now being worked out as to HF frequencies, etc. More later.... I'm not sure what I can do with this Expedition on such short notice even though it is a neat and intriguing "celebration of commonality" between our two countries native populations. I am almost certain at this point that there is no satellite involvement.
