I'm posting all of my current "hambugs" articles for anyone who desires to update their older version hamstacks to the latest versions. Version upgrade for Novice 3.2 is a LONG one and unnecessary to the working of the stacks, so if you just want to fix questions, don't add it. Version upgrade for Tech 3.2 (and General, Advanced and Extra 2.2) relies on this LONG Novice 3.2 upgrade. Again, it's simply adding a new feature and not fixing any buggy questions and is unnecessary to the functioning of the stacks. Note that I'm making this posting to rec.ham-radio rather than rec.radio. amateur.misc....which at the moment doe not exist for me.....someone did a rmgroup of all rec.radio.amateur groups :-(. Here's an index to the articles that follows: Part 1 of 8: This intro plus Hamstack announcement Part 2 of 8: General Directions for fixing bugs in Hamstacks Part 3 of 8: Update from Novice 3.0 to Novice 3.1 - NoCode changes Part 4 of 8: Update from Novice 3.1 to Novice 3.2 - LONG! Part 5 of 8: Update from Tech 3.0 to Tech 3.2 - NoCode changes General 2.0 to General 2.1 Advanced 2.0 to Advanced 2.1 Extra 2.0 to Extra 2.1 Part 6 of 8: Update from Tech 3.1 to Tech 3.2 - requires Part 4 of 8 General 2.1 to General 2.2 Advanced 2.1 to General 2.2 Extra 2.1 to Extra 2.2 Part 7 of 8: Update from Tech 3.2 to Tech 3.3 - buggy questions Part 8 of 8: Update from Tech 3.3 to Tech 3.4 - buggy questions HamStack Announcement: LATEST VERSIONS: Novice v3.2, Technician v3.4, General v2.2, ^^^^ Advanced v2.2, Extra v2.2 This is another announcement about the MacIntosh HamStacks which I have created. If you are not interested, press 'n' now. I have created five HyperCard stacks to help people practice for the written Amateur Radio tests. There is one stack for each of Novice, Technician, General, Advanced and Extra questions. Each stack is an interactive multiple-choice test, created from the entire question pool for that class of license. The test is randomly generated, using the algorithms provided for each of the tests from ARRL, so this is a real-live simulation of the tests you will get in front of a VE. There are some print capabilities (you can print a test with a separate answer key, but it's slow. you can also print your results of how well you did, along with the accompanying correct answer key) and at the end of each test, it will tell you how well you did, allow you to review the missed questions, and allow you to take another randomly generated test. If you can consistently score over 90 on the tests, it's almost a sure guarantee that you will be able to take and pass the VE proctored test. Note that these stacks will only work on a MacIntosh computer. HyperCard version 1.2 or later is required; they were generated with HyperCard version 1.2. Because HyperCard data is NOT stored in any ASCII form, there is no way that this data can be used on other computers, including IBM PCs, so please don't ask for the impossible. Also, I do NOT have access to email these stacks over the computerwaves, nor do I have ftp capability. There are a couple of sites which are supporting these stacks via ftp, as follows: These stacks are supported by ftp by Charley Kline, c-kline@uiuc.edu. To access the files, type "ftp uxc.cso.uiuc.edu", log in as "anonymous", with your email address as the password. Type "binary" at the prompt, then type "cd pub/ham-radio". The five hamstacks are : novice-v3.2.hqx.Z, technician-v3.3.hqx.Z, general-v2.2.hqx.Z, advanced-v2.2.hqx.Z, and extra-v2.2.hqx.Z (or similar names). To retrieve one of the files, (for example, the Novice one), type "get novice-v3.2.hqx.Z". When you're finished retrieving all the files you want, type "quit" to exit ftp. Each file must be uncompressed before moving it to the Mac: "uncompress novice-v3.2.hqx.Z". The files must then be un-binhexed by UnStuffit, then unstuffed by UnStuffit. [The latest hamstacks should be accessible after March 4, 1991, dls] Another ftp site also used to support them. I don't believe they have the latest versions, and I don't have any name to send them to, but here's the information I have concerning the other site. The hamstacks are available via anonymous ftp at apple.com and the files are stored in the /pub/ham-radio directory. [If someone at Apple wants to update these files, they should probably contact me, dls] The latest versions of the stacks are shown below, and are compressed with Stuffit Classic. UnStuffit is included on the diskette. These versions include modifications for NoCode (very minor changes from v3.0 or v2.0). I have written changes that could be posted for the updates from v3.0 (Novice or Technician) or v2.0 (General, Advanced, or Extra). Changes from Tech v3.2 to v3.3 (and to v3.4) could also be applied directly to v3.0 to fix some wrong questions. Note that there have been no questions changed in General or Advanced stacks. All have an improved report printing and (new) saved scores capability. Novice version 3.2 Technician version 3.4 General version 2.2 Advanced version 2.2 Extra version 2.2 If you wish to receive these PUBLIC DOMAIN stacks from me, please send me a SASE (self addressed STAMPED envelope - 2 ounces postage = .52) and 800K diskette. I will no longer send out the stacks unless the envelope has sufficient postage for return mail (in general, that means .52-.98, depending on size of envelope) and for those who send a standard business envelope, I take no responsibility for the condition of the diskette through USnail. For any who have (or may have in the future) these Ham Stacks, I suggest that you print this and save it, since these are general directions and not specific to any one of the stacks. Others can press 'n' now. One more thing: If you DO find and fix any "bugs" in these stacks, PLEASE send me your corrections, so that I can fix my own stacks. Email the list to dls@genrad.com. I will need the Stack name (Novice, etc.), Stack version (found on the help card), card name (or first word of question, like 2A-1.1, which is always unique), and a description of the problem. And THANKS! MSG: means type the following into the message box. You can get a message box at any time by pressing Ctrl M (in HyperCard, that is). Menuitem->Menuchoice: means choose the menu item as specified. There are three major types of bugs in these stacks: 1. Misspelled words in the question or answers, 2. Incorrect answer choice, 3. Incorrect card name, causing card to never be accessed. To fix these stacks yourself (expert HyperCard users, please bear with me, this is written for an uninitiated user), first do the following (these commands can be done from ANY CARD in the stack): 1. Ctrl M to get the message box. 2. MSG: set userlevel to 5 3. MSG: show menubar If you are using recent ham stacks (Novice and Tech v3.0 or greater or General, Advanced, Extra v2.0 or greater), AND you have not yet entered the Ham Stacks (ie, you're still on the Home page), there's an easier way to get started that is faster (this option stops the automatic random generation of a test). If you're already inside the Ham Stack, use the above method instead. 1a. At Home (or anywhere outside the Ham Stacks), Ctrl M to get the message box. 2a. MSG: put true into hamstacktest 3a. Now enter any Ham Stack in normal fashion. 4A. To correct misspelled words in question or answers, first go to the card in question...you're probably already there....but if not, type in message box "go to card "#123"" (assuming you want card #123). a. Tools->Field (top far right ICON). b. Select the field to fix by clicking in that field. c. Objects->Field Info d. Uncheck "Lock Text" (click in the checkbox). e. Tools->Browse (top far left ICON). f. Edit the text in the field as necessary to correct it. g*. Repeat Steps a-c to get to the Field Info again. h*. Check "Lock Text" (click in the checkbox). i*. Tools->Browse CORRECTION COMPLETE. *(If you are doing a lot of typo corrections, it's sometimes easier to unlock all of the answers and question, fix all of the typos, even on other cards, THEN lock all of the answers and question. Just don't forget to lock them when you are done, or you take the chance of inadvertently changing or destroying the text accidentally while taking the test.) 4B. To correct incorrect answer choice, first go to the card in question... as described in 4A above. a. Go to card script, either by holding down Option and Ctrl keys, and pressing C (only works with HyperCard v1.1 or newer), or by Objects->Card Info, then click the Script button. b. Edit the answer line as appropriate. To choose A as the answer, this line should be in script: put "A" into rightone NOTE that the letter should be capitalized. c. Press OK button. CORRECTION COMPLETE (Note this correction will not actually appear until the NEXT time you come to this card, so it's not obvious that it has been fixed). 4C. To correct the card name....this one's more difficult. First you must figure out what IS the right card name....unless you already know (ie, I tell you). The symptom of THIS bug is that when you press the NEXT arrow, nothing happens, but when you press the NEXT arrow a second time, it goes to the question AFTER the next question. Pressing PREV arrow twice will get you to the question BEFORE the bad question. a. To determine the right card name, look at the question number of the previous question (say 20), add one to it, then type in the message box: put item 21 of questlist b. The correct card name will appear in the message box. c. Now go to the PREVIOUS card (let's say the card you want is #122) by typing in the message box: go to card "#121" d. Now go to the next card by Go->Next. DON'T use the NEXT arrow at the bottom of the card!!! You already know that doesn't work. e. Objects->Card Info. f. Edit the correct name into the card field. It should be a number sign (#) followed by the card number you want (if this is the 10th card in the stack, the card name will be #8; card name is always 2 less than its card sequence in the stack). CORRECTION COMPLETE 5. The stack has now been fixed, and you don't HAVE to hide the menubar and change the userlevel to use the test, but when you come back into the stack for the first time after the fix, these will have been set to their correct state. Here's how to fix these without exiting the stack: a. MSG: hide menubar b. MSG: set userlevel to 1 c. If you want to regenerate a new test, Go->First, then MSG: buildlist CHEERS! Diana ->Diana L. WDEF Virus ---------- NOTE that Rick Furuta informed me that there was a WDEF virus on the diskettes that I've been sending out. I don't know how it got there, but he did tell me that it is easy to remove the virus: Before putting the diskette into the drive, hold down the Option and Cloverleaf buttons. Now (while holding down the buttons) install the diskette. The Mac asks you if you want to rebuild the directory structure. Answer YES. It takes only about 10 seconds to fix the diskette. He also suggests (just to be on the safe side) that you also rebuild the directory structure of the hard drive (if you have one). Use the same procedure: Hold Option and Cloverleaf buttons while rebooting the disk. The Mac asks you if you want to rebuild the directory structure. Answer YES. It takes around 30 seconds to rebuild a full hard disk. The latest diskettes that I'm sending out (with Tech v3.4) have fixed this. Any previous diskettes are suspect and should be fixed. NOTE that some "Virus Detectors" PREVENT you from fixing the diskette, they simply eject the diskette. To fix it, you will have to remove the "Virus Detector" temporarily, fix the diskette as described above, then reinstall the "Virus Detector" and the diskette can then be verified and installed correctly. MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System) 10. CAP (Civil Air Patrol) 11. ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) 12. RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) 13. Skywarn (Amateur Weather Spotters) 14. ARRL Field Organization (American Radio Relay League) "Generalist" or "Miscellaneous" Elmers are also quite welcome. Naturally, the more that volunteer, the more the work is distributed. If upon volunteering, you are unable to meet your obligations, simply write to me and I will remove your name from the list. I could also add that because of "personal committments" or "career broadening" you no longer are available to Elmer on a regular basis. I will be the point-of-contact for this project. I will maintain the list, post it to the groups at least monthly, and have the latest copy placed in the supplemental archives at ftp.cs.buffalo.edu in subdirectory pub/ham-radio. Here is the latest version of the list. If you sent me mail and are not on it, please resend as it may have been lost on the way or once it reached my host. 73, Paul, KD3FU ACMNEWS@zeus.unomaha.edu uunet!unocss!zeus!acmnews 137.48.1.1 ps67@umail.umd.edu uunet!mimsy!umail!ps67 128.8.10.28 ON-LINE Elmers Resource Directory (as of 03/21/91) ----------------------------------------------------- John Brewer WB5OAU brewer@anarky.enet.dec.com Miscellaneous, Wire antennas, ------------------------------------------------------ Dan Halbert, KB1RT QTH is West Newton, MA, near Boston. halbert@crl.dec.com Building homebrew QRP gear, Advice on simple antennas ----------------------------------------------------- R.D.
