draft DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report June 93 DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report 18-June-1993 DECnet Phase IV MIB Working Group Jon Saperia Digital Equipment Corporation saperia@tay.dec.com Status of this Memo This document is an Internet Draft. Internet Drafts are working documents of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), its Areas, and its Working Groups. Note that other groups may also distribute working documents as Internet Drafts. Internet Drafts are valid for a maximum of six months and may be updated, replaced, or obsoleted by other documents at any time. It is inappropriate to use Internet Drafts as reference material or to cite them other than as a "work in progress". Please check the id-abstracts.txt listing contained in the internet-drafts Shadow Directories on the nic.ddn.mil, nnsc.nsf.net, nic.nordu.net, ftp.nisc.sri.com, or munnari.oz.au to learn the current status of any Internet Draft. This is a working document only, it should neither be cited nor quoted in a formal document. This document will expire before 18 December 1993. Distribution of this document is unlimited. Please send comments to the author. Expires December 18,1993 [Page 1] draft DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report June 93 1. Introduction This memo outlines current implementation experience of the DECnet Phase IV MIB Extensions which are defined in RFC1289. It has been prepared as part of the evaluation process for the movement of the document from Proposed to Draft Standard Status. This memo does not specify a standard for the Internet community. Expires December 18,1993 [Page 2] draft DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report June 93 2. Implementation Experience A total of four vendors responded positively to the Implementation Survey described in section 3. In almost every instance, the vendors chose to implement the same groups. Based on this experience, it is a simple matter to recommend which groups should remain mandatory and those that should be moved to optional status. In RFC1289, the following groups are defined: o System Group o Network Management Group o Session Group o End Group o Routing Group o Circuit Group o DDCMP Group o DDCMP Multipoint Control Group o Ethernet Group o Counters Group o Adjacency Group o Line Group o Non Broadcast Line Group o Area Group Based on the survey, the following groups have been implemented by either a single vendor multiple times, or by multiple vendors multiple times (see the Implementation Table in Section 4): Expires December 18,1993 [Page 3] draft DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report June 93 o phivSystem o phivManagement (a single vendor implementation on several platforms) o routing o circuit o ethernet o adjacency o line o area The groups that will be moved from mandatory to optional in the RFC will be: o session o end o ddcmp o control o counters (this was implemented by a single vendor once) o nonBroadcastLine 2.1. Implementation Survey The survey below was sent to the entire phiv-mib distribution list on Tuesday May 18, 1993. DECNet Phase IV MIB Implementation Survey Company Name: __________________________ Below is a list of the groups taken directly from the RFC. Please take a moment to put in either an x or product name(s) beside each so that we will be able to tell how many products implement each group. Implementation Table The following table shows the total number of implementations for each group in the MIB. I also shows the total number of vendors which have implemented the group. As a result it is possible to have a group which shows several implementations even though it has only been implemented by a single vendor. Number of Vendors Total Implementations That Have Implemented (Many Vendors Implemented The MIB Group On Several Products) phivSystem 4 6 phivManagement 1 3 session 0 0 end 0 0 routing 4 6 circuit 4 6 ddcmp 0 0 control 0 0 ethernet 4 6 counters 1 1 adjacency 4 6 line 3 3 nonBroadcastLin 0 0 area 4 6 Expires December 18,1993 [Page 6] draft DECnet Phase IV MIB - Implementation Report June 93 3. Acknowledgements I wish to thank the members of the DECnet Phase IV MIB Working Group for the input they provided to the Implementation Survey and its timely completion. I also wish to thank the members for their continued technical review and assistance in the evaluation of RFC1289. 4.
