*** Global Abbreviations *** *** Attention! Attenzióne! ¡Atención! *** If you are NOT using a U.S. keyboard, you must read this carefully! Global Abbreviations will fully support all Windows 3.1 (8 bit) keyboards. A great deal of work was required to make this possible, and still, there are a few things which you must do. 1. Read this file and follow the directions. 2. See "Help International" for more information. Global Abbreviations has four Hot Keys that it responds to. Two of them you will use constantly. The other two, rarely. These Hot Keys are given default values. To feel the full power of Global Abbreviations you will want these Hot Keys to be easy to type. On U.S. keyboards, the defaults for the Hot Keys are set so that they: 1. Are easy to type. 2. Do not conflict with commonly used key combinations. The first time you run Global Abbreviations it will determine if you are not using a U.S. keyboard. If you are not, it will change the defaults. This is necessary because the U.S. defaults will NOT work on most non-U.S. keyboards. NOTE: It is your country and language settings which Global Abbreviations will use to make this determination. The new defaults (see below) that are chosen are NOT recommended! This is important. They were only chosen because they will work on any keyboard. The problem is, they are not easy to type, and therefore, do NOT make for good typing aids. They can also conflict with many programs which make use of the Function Keys. |--£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££--| | | | Non-U.S. defaults for Hot Keys. | | (you should change these) | | | | The Append Hot Key-> F2 | | The Popup Hot Key-> F4 | | The Immediate Hot Key-> F7 | | The Replace Hot Key-> F8 | | | |--§§ §§§ §§§ §§§ §§§ §§§ §§§ §§§ §§--| Here is the recommended course of action. 1. Take the "Quick Tour" first. You should see the above defaults used throughout the QuickTour. If instead, you see things like ";" then you are in the U.S. Version instead of the Non-US version. This should only happen if you currently have your "Country" setting to U.S. 2. After you've gotten the idea of what Global Abbreviations can do, you should go into the Hot Key Editor (see Help) and CHANGE the Hot Keys to something easier to type. The Help topic on Hot Keys gives suggestions. 3. Be sure to read the "International" topic in the Help file. It has more suggestions and a few minor things to watch for. See the "Caveats" subsection of the "International" topic! Once you spend a little time with Global Abbreviations you will find that you are getting much more work done in much less time. And, you will reduce your repetitive motion. Ciao, George Tatgé gat@csn.org
