V9R 6R1 Canada Phone: [250] 753-3096 Electronic mail address:: dr100@ncf.ca World Wide Web address: http://www.ncf.ca/~dr100 INTRODUCTION On behalf of I Can See Books, I would like to thank you for taking the time to browse through our catalogue. I feel sure that there are books of interest for all ages. Here is just a sampling of what we have to offer: --Disney's Mickey Meets the Giant and Robert Munsch's Mud Puddle and the Boy in the Drawer. In fact, we have the entire Robert Munsch series available, as well as 3 dozen Disney's classic short stories. We also have many books by other authors which children from kindergarten through grade four will enjoy. --Hundreds of Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Tom Swift mysteries, all classic books such as the Little House on the Prairie series, The entire Wizard of Oz series, Black Beauty, and all books written by Beverly Cleary, to name just a few. All of these books will thrill young people from grade four through high school. --Many adult books by such well known authors as John Grisham, Robin Cook and Danielle Steel, to name just a few. --We have even written many innovative computer games and utilities designed especially to work excellently with all DOS speech synthesizers. A list of these programs can be found at the very end of this catalogue. Before long, you will find yourself building a marvellous Braille or audio book library, with books that can be read and enjoyed over and over. We are constantly adding books to all sections of this catalogue, but If there are any other books that you would like to see us add to our catalogue in the future, please suggest these titles to us. If we get several requests for these titles, we guarantee that you will see them added to our catalogue. If you have any other feedback about our books, we would love to hear from you. BRAILLE BOOKS All of our books are produced electronically, and this is the reason why are prices are so affordable. A text scanner is used to copy the print book into our computer, and a Braille printer is used to emboss books in standard English grade 2 Braille. All Braille books are bound with the standard spiral binding with clearly labelled covers. Books for children grades k-4 are either Brailled with double spacing, to aid the child in following the lines more easily, or are embossed with regular line spacing on small pages to make the child feel a sense of accomplishment every time he or she is able to turn another page in his or her story book. THE IMPORTANCE OF BRAILLE LITERACY We here at I Can See Books recognize the increasing importance of Braille. For well over a century, Braille has been the primary medium with which blind people have read books for pleasure, conducted research projects, and communicated with others. Then came the talking computer. Although the talking computer is a marvellous tool for the blind person, allowing him or her access to a vast world of information, we still can not forget how important the ability to read Braille effectively and efficiently is. To better understand the importance of Braille literacy, let us compare Braille to standard print. A sighted person, no matter how deep into computers, would never even consider decreasing his or her usage of print. Print is his or her main medium of communicating, of reading books and magazines, and the computer would not affect the use of written communication in the least. So, then, why should a blind person be forced to give up reading Braille as much or entirely just because it is less expensive and easier to produce a book on the talking computer rather than in Braille? After all, nothing can replace the pure pleasure and joy of picking up a Braille book, just as a sighted person would pick up a good pocketbook, and taking it everywhere with you. A Braille book does not need packs of spare batteries to allow you to read it, nor does it ever develop mechanical difficulties. A Braille book is always there for you to read as many times as you wish, and Braille books can be collected and built into a library of your very own. In short, we believe that Braille literacy is every bit as important to the blind person as ink-print literacy is to the sighted person. If the blind are supposed to compete on terms of equality with their sighted peers, any blind person should not be limited in choosing what books he or she would like to read just because they are unavailable or very expensive to obtain. Books, in whatever medium, be it Braille, audio cassette or standard print, always have been, and will continue to be, a major source of education and entertainment for many years to come. It is our primary goal here at I Can See Books to help ensure that everyone has access to whatever books they would like to read. In addition, we realize the importance of producing high-quality, low-cost Braille and audio books, and making them readily available to anyone who would like to read them. AUDIO BOOKS Our audio books are recorded on cassette tape with the newest and most modern speech synthesizer on the market. Worried that the recording will sound monotonous? It does not. I have read over one thousand books with this speech synthesizer, which possesses truly human qualities when it comes to narrating a book. It has every bit as much expression and the ability to hold your interest as does a talking book recorded by a sighted reader. The voice you will hear when listening to our talking books is that of a friendly man, named Perfect Paul, whom you will very quickly become attached to as your narrator. In fact, we even have a special kids' voice which we use to record our books for very young children. We have chosen to produce our audio books in this manner to make them as affordable as possible. If you compare the price of our audio books with that of people who charge at least $6 an hour to record the printed word onto cassette, you will think twice about our talking books. We charge $8 for each six-hour cassette, recorded on the standard four-track cassette used by the Library of Congress for all of its talking books. Yes, you read that correctly! For an entire book that is 6 hours in length or less, you pay only $8 to have us record it onto cassette and Braille label the tape. SERIES PRICES In many cases, it is cheaper to purchase all books written by one author in our catalogue. When a series price is available, it will be listed before the author's entries, along with the discounted price and a description of the series. TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES Tired of being unable to read the printed word? I Can See Books offers very reasonable transcription services for all pocketbooks of any length onto cassette tape. To make this service affordable, any children's or adults' pocketbook we transcribe is scanned into our computer. We proofread the scanned text copy to correct any major scanning errors, as well as running the book through several up-to-date scanning correction programs designed to fix the most common scanning errors. However, such rare imperfections as occasional I's interpreted as 1's are still present in the scanned copy. Please note that handwritten material never scans. The typical pocketbook has a 98 percent accuracy rate, and is perfect for reading on cassette. Here's how our transcription service works: you name a book which you wish to be recorded on audio cassette. The chances are that we will be able to obtain a copy of this book. If the book you wish to be transcribed is not available to us--a very unlikely event--we will ask that you mail us the book to be transcribed. After the book is scanned into our computer, we record it on audio cassette in the same way that our audio books are produced. We do not Braille books that you have asked to be transcribed, because we would not want to reproduce any imperfections in Braille. The cost of this service, which gives you access to ANY pocketbook on the market, is nominal. We charge $8 for reproducing the book into alternate format, plus $8 for each six- hour cassette, recorded with your book. Almost all children's and youths' books will easily be recorded on one cassette, and almost all adult pocketbooks will be short enough to be recorded on two cassettes. Hence, to have a pocketbook transcribed, you will seldom be paying more than $24 to have the book sent to you on cassette tape. We also will Braille or record any text material on a computer disk for $.30 per Braille page. If you wish to find the price of reproducing text on a computer disk in either Braille or audio cassette before the order is finalized, please specify this when you send us the disk containing the text you wish us to reproduce. Upon receipt of your transcribed talking book, you will also receive an invoice, billing you for the cost of transcription and production. ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLES Our service of producing any article from the World Book Encyclopedia, 1993 version, gives you access to research information from animals to zoos, from birds to x-rays, and so on. We will produce any article of your choice in either Braille or on audio cassette. To request an article, simply send us the topic which you require information on, along with the format which you would like the article to be sent to you in. The length of an encyclopedia article depends on how broad a topic you are requesting information on. If you wish to find information about animals, for instance, the article is likely to be 80 Braille pages. But if you are requesting information on a specific topic such as sparrows or seals, the article is likely to be only about 5 to 10 pages in length. The price for this service is very reasonable. We will record any article, regardless of its length, on audio cassette for an $8 fee. Since articles vary in length, we can not specify an exact price of reproducing an article in Braille. If you wish a price quote before we proceed with your order, please specify this when sending your request. PERSONALIZING BOOKS Our books make tremendous gift items for all occasions. If you wish to order a book for someone special, we will include a personalized message at the beginning of the book for an additional fee of $1. We will add personal dedications in all books in our catalogue and in any books which you ask to be transcribed onto audio cassette. Every month, we will send you another book, which your child will come to look forward to. The prices of subscribing for one year to this club are as follows: 12 Braille books: $95. 12 audio books: $95. 12 book- tapes: $190. LIST OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS The following is a list of the children's books that we carry at the present time. Please note that two smaller sections, Holiday Books and Religious Books, follow the main list of children's books. All books for children, ages preschool through grade two, are either Brailled with the double-spaced method or are brailled with regular spacing on small pages. Books for older children are embossed with the standard single-spaced method. We charge $8 for all of these Braille books. If you would like a printed sheet, containing the text, no pictures or illustrations, interleaved with each Braille page of the book, the price for each book is $16. This allows a sighted parent, teacher or older sibling to read along with a child, so that both sighted and blind children and their parents and teachers can enjoy reading these wonderful stories. We also produce all of these children's books on audio tape. To hold the child's attention while listening to the talking book, we can record the book with a special electronic kids' voice that children will love. All of these audio children's books cost $8. When ordering any children's books on audio cassette, please specify whether you wish the standard man's narrating voice or the kids' voice to be used when recording the story onto cassette. If you would like to purchase a book-tape, a Braille book with an accompanying cassette tape copy of the book, you should specify this when you order. The price for all children's book- tapes is $16.
