HENTER-JOYCE NEWSLETTER September 1993 NEW SOFTWARE: Henter-Joyce, Inc. Proudly Presents WordScholar An educational tool for people with learning disabilities. WordScholar is a break through in computer technology for persons who have learning disabilities. WordScholar is a computer program that speaks and highlights the words displayed on a computer monitor. By adding the power of the spoken word to the use of a personal computer, WordScholar unlocks new talents and provides new independence for people who have certain types of learning disabilities. This is not just JAWS with highlighted words. It is designed specifically for people with learning disabilities, and uses some of the same technology we have developed over the years with JAWS. WordScholar brings the spoken word to those who have difficulties working with the written word, and adds a new dimension to the use of a computer. It is a tool that can work with most any software program that relies on written language. It can be used to improve a person's ability to write coherent sentences, identify poorly written paragraphs, and quickly notice incorrectly typed information. WordScholar is not a spell checker or a grammar checker. It is simply a tool that verbally speaks the text that appears on the computer screen and highlights the word being spoken. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM WORD SCHOLAR? Clearly, not all people who have learning disabilities can benefit from using the tools offered by WordScholar. Learning disabilities take many specific forms and WordScholar is not the appropriate tool for everyone. However, as an added feature we combine the American Heritage Dictionary with WordScholar, making assimilation easier. Using the dictionary to break words into syllables or to get a definition for the word in question, gives the user a more complete understanding of it's usage. Some of the features of American Heritage Dictionary are: Wordhunter, Help, Anagram, Headword, Dictionary, Crossword, Thesaurus, Paste & Lookup. * INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL * WordScholar FOR ONLY $495. (This offer is for a limited time only. Special is for software package only. REGULARLY $695.) For information, or to order your WordScholar NOW call 800-336-5658 or 813-528-8900. PREPRINTED FORMS - NO PROBLEM: Form-Mate is used by anyone who needs to fill-in the blanks on paper forms. This software program is an invaluable tool for people who need to independently complete such forms as purchase orders, client service forms, and any of the thousands of other forms routinely used in the workplace. This simple to use program works with an IBM or IBM compatible computer and a standard printer. Form-Mate is designed for situations where paper forms are routinely filled-in by hand with pen, pencil, or typewriter. Form-Mate was designed with the priorities of its users in mind. If you use adaptive equipment Form-Mate can be used with JAWS or other screen reading programs. Form-Mate will also work well with most computers using Braille or Large Print displays, and can be used with special keyboard access programs. Form-Mate is prompt driven and features a pop-up Lotus style menu. This means it is easy to use and always tells the user exactly what needs to be done next. It can handle any number of different forms, and can insert repeated data on multiple page forms. If for example, the name and Social Security number of a client must be filled-in at the top of each page of a five-page form, then Form-Mate can automatically insert the repeated information wherever it is needed. Form-Mate can fill-in the blanks of standard forms being used in the office, or it can be used to create customized forms to meet individual needs. Sometimes it is quicker or easier to create a customized form in situations where the use of reprinted forms is not required. This flexibility means that most any paper form can be filled-in as it exists or new forms can be created. If Form-Mate can be beneficial to you or someone you know, call us. We will be glad to send you a demo and give you the name of your local Henter-Joyce dealer. IS YOUR JOB TYPICAL? NEITHER IS HENTER-JOYCE! Our products, JAWS, Form-Mate and WordScholar are designed to fit your specific needs! What makes your job unique is the fact that you use adaptive technology. You want the best when it comes to your screen reader right? Right! The power of JAWS /macros can make the difference. WHAT IS A MACRO? JAWS can relieve the user from entering repetitious screen reading commands with the use of macros. A macro is like a short tape recording of key strokes. The macro feature of JAWS allows a series of recorded key strokes to be triggered and replayed just like a cassette tape can be rewound and replayed again-and-again. A macro is assigned to a specific key and the macro is replayed every time that key is pressed. For example, when a spell checking program is being used, a single key stroke can be used to trigger a macro that: Searches for the misspelled word, moves the JAWS Cursor to the word, reads the word, spells the word, and reads the possible spelling alterative's. MACROS MAKE EVERYTHING EASY. AUTOMATIC MACROS RESPOND TO CHANGING SCREENS: Macros can also be tied to the ability of JAWS to watch the screen for changes. For example JAWS can watch the bottom line of information on the screen, and whenever the line turns from blue to red, a JAWS macro will be instantly triggered. The automatic macro might turn-on the JAWS Cursor, move the JAWS Cursor to the top of the screen and read line one. A different macro could be triggered if the color turns to blue. JAWS has the ability to automatically tell the user about anything that is happening on the screen or to take a specific action in response to screen activity. Macros are very popular with sighted computer users, because macros make the keyboard more efficient and easier to use. Since a blind person uses the keyboard more intensely than a sighted person, macros are even more important. The easy-to-use JAWS Macro Editor offers full speech interaction and makes the process of creating macros a snap. The Macro Editor pops-up within any application program, so macros can be written, tested, revised, and saved at any time. Many people think of the word "macro" as a negative. Why? Maybe because "other" companies have been macro- bashing for years. However, they will grudging admit that "macros" are quite useful. Indeed they are, the most popular and powerful commercial software packages have always had "macros." Did you know that JAWS pioneered macros in screen readers five years ago? People want the power and control that come from using macros. At Henter-Joyce we love macros! That does not mean you have to love them too. We give you a choice. Some people do not want to combine and string basic commands into advanced speech functions. That's fine because we do it for you. JAWS has a number of built-in macros so you may never need to use our powerful advanced macro capability unless you want to. For the advanced user we do not limit you to just speech functions, JAWS can be matched to most any application program, like a tailor-made suit. Just like all the really good commercial applications, our macros are the icing on the cake. So, if you want to create your own macros, that's great, have fun discovering the power of JAWS /macros. A Basic Macros cassette training tape comes with JAWS. We also provide Intermediate and Advanced Training Tapes. Intermediate Macros (5 cassettes) only $25.00. Advanced Macros (3 cassettes) only $20.00. CUSTOMER COMMENTS: Mr. Darrin Porter of Tampa Florida wrote us a letter concerning his research into stand-alone reading machines. The letter contains a brief description of the three systems he reviewed and lists both the good and bad characteristics of each. This letter along with his recommendations were sent to each vender as well as his counselor at the Division of Blind Services. I have met Darrin and it is obvious that he is intelligent and well educated in the use of computers as well as adaptive equipment. After spending time with each vendor he has made a well-informed decision which we would like to share with you. It is not possible for us to do a complete reprint of Darrin's letter so here is Darrin's final comments and recommendation: "In my opinion, the HJ Reader is the most powerful and flexible machine I looked at. It is reasonably priced and appears to be accurate and reliable. Since I am a competent computer user, the ease of use and convenience associated with the other two systems is not nearly as important to me as the machine's power and over-all ability to read a wide variety or printed materials. I feel that it is a system that I can work with and maintain with little effort." FOR SALE: We have two (2) Arkenstone, Open Book Deluxe Edition, Demonstration Units for sale.
