******************************************************* This is a copy of "Just What I Need" (or "JWIN") v1.3F for the Psion S3a/3c/Siena ONLY. It is a SHAREWARE utility program. THE AUTHOR (P.K.Spencer of Aylesbury, England) SHALL NOT BE HELD LIABLE IN ANY WAY FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOU OR YOUR SYSTEM AS A RESULT OF USING THIS PROGRAM OR OTHERWISE. ******************************************************** INSIDE THE ZIP *************** Jwin.opa (program file - ESSENTIAL) Jwin.txt (this file - DELETE AFTER READING) Jwin.hlp (help file - EXTREMELY USEFUL) Jwin.dat (Conversions Data - ESSENTIAL) Quikcalc.ovl ("Quick Calc" module - OPTIONAL) ********************************************************** * VERY IMPORTANT NOTE!! * ********************************************************** Please install the on-line help as this provides the best guide to all of the programs features. I don't like long read me files because people tend to just skip them and end up not knowing how to use the program. To this end I've tried to keep the file as short and as small as possible. This means that none of the features are explained and that there is no in-depth "how to use me" guide. However, all of this is in the file "Jwin.hlp" and if you want to know how to use JWIN then you NEED to install the help, after all, once you get the hang of it the help can be deleted later! INSTALLATION ************ Put Jwin.opa in the \APP directory on any drive. Then create a directory called \JWIN\ 1 deep in the directory tree (e.g. M:\JWIN\) on any drive. Into this, put the conversion file (jwin.dat), the help file (jwin.hlp) if you want it, and also the calculator module (Quikcalc.ovl) if you want to use it. NOTE: PLEASE AVIOD USING FLASH DISKS FOR THE \JWIN\ DIRECTORY AS WHEN JWIN TRIES TO COMPRESS IT'S FILES, MORE SPACE WILL BE USED When JWIN first starts up, it checks for the location of the file "jwin.dat" in a \JWIN\ directory on drive M, then drive A, then drive B and finally drive C (for Cyclone users). If it can't find "jwin.dat" in any of these places, it warns you and the program will not run. If it DOES find "jwin.dat" in one of those places, it takes that drive to be it's location for files. E.g. If you have a A:\JWIN\ directory with "jwin.dat" in it, then JWIN decides that A is the drive it will use for all it's other files. A file called "Jwin.ini" will be created in that \JWIN directory, and this holds all of the crucial settings. WHEN you register a file called "Jwin.reg" is also placed in the \JWIN directory so that the program recognises you as a kind-hearted, registered user ;-) NOTE 2: It is possible to have the .opa file on a DIFFERENT disk to "jwin.dat" and therefore all the other settings. E.g. put "jwin.opa" into A:\APP\ *BUT* create M:\JWIN\ and into that put "jwin.dat" and "jwin.hlp". This means that JWIN will use drive M (Internal) for it's files base, but it will actually be running on drive A! As a result, JWIN is very flexible as to where you want to have it installed - the choice is basically yours. RevTran ********* This program has been protected against reverse-translation to the best of my abilities and ANY ATTEMPT TO HACK AND/OR REVERSE-TRANSLATE THIS PROGRAM IN ANY WAY IS IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW! About the Prog ************** I wrote this prog because I wanted to have a collection of general utilities that were useful and quick to access, but didn't take up a huge amount of space. After much development (spending far much more time than I should have done on the code), I thought that the program was in an acceptable state to be publically released, and more importantly, to be of use to other Psion users. About the Author **************** P.K.Spencer is a 16 year old from Aylesbury. I have limited OPL experience and I'm learning to write programs. This is one of my first attempts and I have now managed to reach quite an advanced level, this version is wildly superior to any earlier versions. The Prog appears to have no bugs but if you find any or have any comments/suggestions for future versions then I welcome your input either by: E-Mail on nicko@nildram.co.uk or 106023,676 on CIS OR by Snail-Mail at : 10 Prebendal Court Oxford Road Aylesbury Bucks HP19 3EY Updates of Jwin (and all my other programs) can be found on my web page at: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~nicko/ Disabled Features ****************** JWIN is FULLY WORKING shareware. This meants there are NO, yes that's correct NO, disabled features in JWIN while it's unregistered. The only things you will see to remind you to register are nag screens on start and exit and also every time you switch to JWIN. Registering *********** JWIN v1.3F is distributed as Shareware and you may use it in it's unregistered form for 25 days. If, after this trial period, you find JWIN useful, then you MUST register. To register the program on Compuserve, GO SWREG 13871, otherwise you must: Send 5 UKP (10 USD) OR a foreign currency equivalent PLUS 10% to my Snail-Mail address with either your E-Mail address or with a an SAE. This will enable me to send you your personalised Key-Code to unlock the program's features and banish the nags forever. The final alternative is to use the RegNet serive and register JWIN by going to: http://www.swregnet.com/530p.htm When registered you will be entitled to any future upgrades FREE, you also get to take advatage of the new versions before many users as all new versions will appear on my homepage BEFORE they're released to other places (e.g. CompuServe's Psion Forum). You also get a direct say in future developments and more importantly a clear conscience 5 UKP isn't a lot to register and it'll help me develop future versions (and other programs). I don't have much time free as I'm doing my GCSE's so I need an incentive :-) A Brief "How to use me" guide ***************************** When you first run JWIN, you'll se a screen with a summary of your current System's info on it. This is the main screen of JWIN and provides a quick round-up of the Psion's Status at that moment! Although it won't tell you much that the Psion itself can't, it does provide the info all on 1 screen. This saves you having to go through several dialogs to find what you want from the System Screen! The usual keys of menu and help do their normal functions and I URGE you to explore the menu fully. The help carries all the important details of the main functions of JWIN. JWIN has been designed to be left open all the time and has been given the ability to detect a hotkey of it's own without you having to assing one to it from the button bar. This hotkey is governed by the "Set preferences" section and it's up to the user what they assign JWIN, the default is Control-J. However, this only works if you DO NOT leave JWIN showing a menu or dialog. If you can afford to (i.e. have spare System key combinations), then it's far better and more reliable to assign JWIN a key from the Button Bar. All in all, JWIN is a very straight-foreward program to use and it's very easy to get the hang of it and use it to it's full potential. Remember, if you do find JWIN of use to you, then you MUST register after 25 days ;-) Features ********* - User configurable hotkey for easy and rapid switching to JWIN. - Minimal memory usage - JWIN is designed to be left running ALL the time. - Conversions between MANY of the most common unit values - Find the day of the week a date falls on - Find the number of days between 2 dates - Quick Mini-Calculator - Very user configurable via "Set preferences" - MANY, MANY more ;-) Thanks to... ************* I would like to thank STEVE LITCHFIELD for his help and suggestions. ALEX WILBUR was also a *great* help in providing me with bits of code for a)Quick Calc and b)the hotkey function. Also, JOHN BOYCE for beta testing on a "real" Siena and HANS TROMP for help in re-designing certain parts of the code from v1.2x, and also his testing and suggestions! My other beta testers also appear ;-)) to have done a good job. ******************************************************************** *********** The History of JWIN in the Public Eyes! **************** ******************************************************************** 1)First public release of "Just What I Need" (or JWIN) was v1.2F (21/12/96) 2) Bug-fixed version 1.21F released on 23/12/96: a) Fixed a bug meaning that you could only install on drive M. b) Added a "Refresh" (Psion-Shift-F) option to allow the user to update the display. c) Reduced the memory used when switching away by about 10K! d) *Slightly* reduced size of the .opa 3) v1.3F released on 12/01/1997: a) VAT/Tax rate now user-defined via "Set preferences" b) Made Quick Calc an optional module c) Fixed bugs in Quick Calc for decimal point on Siena d) Fixed a few bugs in the conversions data file and also added some new values. e) Fixed a bug in the "Temperature Conversion" where it showed answers to many, many decimal places - oops! f) Added "hooks" in the code for a Currency Conversions module which will be released later. g) Some more enhancements/fixes which I can't remember ;-) ******************************************************************** Version 1.3F Copyright (C) P.K.Spencer 1996-1997 RELEASED Sunday 18/01/1997 P.K.Spencer
