The purpose of this file is not only to give you an idea of who we are and what we do, but to go deeper - tell you about the future and even release some of our inner minds. LoBo, 18th of September '96 Ŀ 1 HISTORY BRIEFING As always it started on the C64.... After a short period of gam- ing we soon realized the great potential hidden in this "key- board", and experimenting couldn't make any damage... Quite a few productions came out of these years, but we never reached to make a demo.... At this time the group was called "the BH-Team", and consisted of only two members: Zmart and me (LoBo). Then, after about four years at this platform, LoBo bought a PC (286, EGA!). Zmart was now alone, but continued to code on the C64, and soon he joined another friend (RaZorBall) who was a graphician. Their group was named "XeNoGenesis"; nothing was ever released... Mean- while, "System X" was founded by LoBo and a couple of his school- mates; a group based on Q-Basic & C++ coders. Some stuff was made, but never released. As LoBo advanced to Assembler, he left System X, and reunited with "the old ones" in XeNoGenesis. In the year 1993 XeNoGenesis' first releases took form. We got known to MLJ, a scool- mate who happened to code in assembler, and he teached LoBo and Zmart a trick or two.... Some months later we brought in Proton, one of the old members of System X, and XeNoGenesis now included five members: LoBo, MLJ, Zmart, Proton and RaZorBall.... It stayed like this for a couple of years. Then, suddently one day, this guy called ystein (Latex) called me.... He had heard from someone in Proxima that we needed a musician. Well, I told him to send some examples, and so he did.... Most of the music was of avarage stand- ard, although a couple of them sounded quite good. Suddently we were six members. And if that wasn't enough... Two weeks later Latex phoned me and wanted to get us yet another musician. His name was also ystein, and once again a disk ended up at my desk containing some nice tunes. As it's important to include different styles in a group we also decided to say yes to our eigth member; Bizar..... This is our last member so far, and as you can see from the next chapter XeNoGenesis now consists of eight people, more or less active at the current time..... Some demo- parts were ready, but we got a hell of a lot to do just before The Gathering. As always before the music system was the pain in the ass.... Two weeks before TG all the time was spent trying to link a modplayer together with the unfinished demo (the rest of it was supposed to be made at TG). Because of this rush we ended up at TG with little code, even though we still had big visions. The Intro and endpart was totally finished, and they really looked nice together with some superb, scary music from NHP, and the gen- ius chill-out tune from Sublevel 3 (thank you guys!). Some days ran by at the Vikingship, and only a couple of routines was the result.... Even two and a half days of non-sleeping-pure-coding gave small results. And that's how Mystic took shape; speed-code by LoBo plus piccys from RZB, while Zmart was playing Command & Conquer (+tried to code some), MLJ traveled around in Spain, Latex chatting / testing his musicdisk, Myriad showing up the last day (can't blame him) and Proton skiing down the mountains of Norway. Altogether it turned out to be a bit of a stressing TG (at least for me), and that's something we want to change before the next one.... Therefor we have already started on making the next demo so we can use more time in the end on design, and that extra touch. Ŀ 9 TORUS KILLER In the last year I have compiled a vast amount of IRC chats which discuss the current demo scene, and here is XeNoGenesis' view on the whole thing.... (Not quite finished yet.....) Ŀ A THE GATHERING - SAME MISTAKES AGAIN ??? Since the Gathering '93 XeNoGenesis has contributed to different compos each year, such as 64kB Intro, Demo, Graphics, 4kB.... And my personal opinion is that compos are essential parts of computerparties... All the great groups are gathered to struggle for the 1st place, and it's all very fair; same computer, same bootup, etc. That's at least the picture the arrangers like to present to the mass; -who votes, while the people who actually participate in the compos soon get another view of it all.... Here are just some of the weakness: TG '95: - The projector couldn't handle tweak-mode, and some very annoying text showed up each time the screen- mode was changed, while it waited 3 seconds before even switching! Some parts in our Intro was not shown because if that.... - Bugs in the votingsoftware.... Caused some hours delay on the compos (some weren't finished before half of the attenders had left the partyplace!!!) - The party was located in Stavanger, which is a 10 hours traintrip from Oslo (the capital)!!! TG '96: - Once again the projector fucked up the compo. It caused some kind of "flickering" on the picture while 4/5 demos were running, among them our Mystic. I ran up to the people in charge for the demonstration, and made them try to run it properly, but: the same problem each time... - Not to forget about the votingsystem.... (If all seven people of XeNoGenesis had voted for our demo, it would have reached a fourth place instead of a ninth !!!!) LoBo, 18th of September '96 Ŀ B FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT XNG Frequently asked questions are the same each time, but the answers are different. Instead of getting my postbox filled every day when we get big and famous, I should rather aswer them once and for all here: Q: I've got some demos, but I'm a kind of a demo collector, and wonder where I can get more.... A: To get the best demos from norwegian groups, check out our WHQ, Count Zero. (See chapter 3), or internet at: ftp.cdrom.com Q: Aren't you tired of making demos? How about some utils, or is that to difficult for you? A: Of course we make utils as well. As a demo coder you have to make lots of utils for making 3D-objects, converting, making tables, testing, etc. These utils are for selfuse only, and would probably never be released. Q: Many demogroups give out musicdisks. How come you haven't made any such ones ? A: Actually, Latex has been making his own musicdisk which should be out now...?? I have also promised Bizar to code him a musicinterface / musicdisc, and that will be done as soon as we feel finished with the demo for TG '97 ! Q: Do any of you have a normal life beside computers? A: Of course we have! First of all we all study in universities and lower schools. Some of us even do sports, like: basketball, beachvolley and icehockey. The music taste is a bit divided: techno, jungle, rave, ambient, etc. for most of us, while the others chill out with Four None Blondes and "Final Countdown". Q: Will you continue to support Soundblaster in the future, or pick the easy way with only Gus? A: The Soundblaster option has always popped up in our productions, and I can't see any reasons why it shouldn't in the future too. It's a standard, and will always be! Gus will die out, but we will continue to support both for a while. In the near future (2 years) XeNoGenesis will support the following cards: Soundblaster / Pro / 16 - Has come to stay.... Gravis Ultrasound - It's still around.... Pro Audio Spectrum - Compatible with SB Q: What is that PMODE thing you always use? A: PMODE is a genius thing made by TRAN.... It allows us to code in 32bit flat protected mode. Our code is almost like the old assebler, just a bit more complicated IRQ-handlers. TRAN's code deals with the rest (checks memory, allows memory, switches to protected mode, etc.). The version we currently are using is v2.51, a touched up version of v2.5 which has proved to run quite well with no known errors so far..... Q: What programs do you use for making demos? A: For code we use Turbo Assembler v4.0, for graphics we use Deluxe Paint II Enhanced and 3D Studio v4.0, our musicians use Scream Tracker v3.2, Impulse Tracker v1.05 and Fast Tracker v2.06 . In addition to these we use our own programs to make 3D-objects, tables, fractal-IFS', ascii-drawings, etc. We also use Iguana's DEMOVT v1.6 as a music interface, which has shown to run even better than v1.5. Thank's a lot guys.. LoBo, 19th of September '96 Ŀ C COMMERCIAL DEMONSTRATIONS Yes, we can do commercial demonstartions as well. If your company realizes the great potential in such productions, don't hesitate with contacting me (LoBo). Tell us about the products / things you would like to present & which marked(s) to you hope to reach. All this will of course be discussed in details before we eventually make the presentation......
