San Francisco, Calif., August 3, 1992--Gupta Technologies announced today
that Mitsubishi Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) is reselling new
Japanese-language (Kanji character set) versions of its SQLBase Server
database, SQLWindows application development program, and SQLNetwork
family of connectivity products to SQL databases.

The translation into Kanji was completed as a joint development project by
the two companies. In addition to the software, the manuals for SQLWindows
and SQLBase have also been translated into Kanji.

According to Richard Heaps, Vice President, Rest of World Operations for
Gupta Technologies, Gupta is in a position to contribute to the growth of
client-server in Asia, just as the company has in the U.S. and Europe.
"The client-server market in Japan is poised for tremendous growth as the
penetration of networks into major corporations is increasing rapidly," he
said. "There has been a great deal of enthusiasm for the Japanese version
of Windows 3.0, as there is a natural match between the graphical nature
of the Kanji language and the capabilities of graphical PCs. The native
language interface and documentation will enhance the productivity of both
programmers and end users."

"Gupta Technologies began its partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation
almost four years ago with the mutual goal of developing double-byte
enabled products that could be localized to provide the best possible
products and support to our Japanese customers," said Heaps. "We have now
reached that initial goal. We expect that the availability of Gupta's
products in Kanji will significantly expand our market in Japan."

Mitsubishi Corporation has been marketing the English language versions of
SQLBase and SQLWindows in Japan for the past three years. Over 100
companies in Japan are now using Gupta products in client-server
applications that include oil refinery production control, scientific data
management, contract information management, asset management, traffic
control video system management, etc.

Gupta has been able to enable the internationalization of its products by
effectively removing all of their language-specific characteristics. As a
result of the development work done to support the Japanese language,
Gupta's products support double-byte character sets (DBCS) and are enabled
to support other languages requiring 16 bits (as compared to 8 bits for
English), such as Arabic, Chinese and Hangul (Korea). Projects are
currently underway to adapt Gupta's products for Chinese and Hebrew. Since
SQLWindows and SQLBase are not language-specific but based on Windows,
they will support native-language versions of Windows. The Kanji version
of SQLWindows will support the Japanese version of Microsoft Windows 3.X.

The native-language translation applies to all versions of SQLBase Server,
including the NLM, OS/2, DOS and UNIX Gupta's products support the PC
platforms commonly used in Japan, including non-DOS systems, such as the
NEC PC-98, which has the greatest PC market share in Japan, as well as
DOS/V systems.

With the availability of the new Kanji products, Mitsubishi will be holding
a series of introductory and technical seminars as part of its market
development activities for Gupta's SQL product family. Mitsubishi is also
planning a developer's conference for Gupta users in Japan.

Gupta Technologies, Inc., founded in 1984, is the leading vendor of
client-server database software for PC networks.
