Vpic is the viewer which is used by our view program to allow you to see the
images on this disk.  Vpic takes better advantage of your video card if it is
installed on your hard drive.  

To install vpic for easier use follow these instructions:

Make a subdirectory on your hard disk.  Type

MKDIR c:\vpic

This creates a subdirectory to hold your vpic files.

Copy all the vpic files to the subdirectory with the following command, where X
is your CDROM drive letter

copy X:\vpic\*.* c:\vpic

This puts all the vpic files into the subdirectory on your hard disk.

You should now read the vpic install documentation.  This explains how to
select the right video card for your computer for vpic.  Vpic will work the way
it is, but will give better performance if you run the vpic 'config' program.
This lets you select the right video card for your computer.  You have to do
this on your hard disk, since you can't write to the CDROM drive.

Read the install documentation by typing

view \vpic\vpic.doc

Run the vpic config program by typing config at your c prompt.  For example:

C:
cd \vpic
config

The program will then ask you to select a video card and resolution mode.  If
you are not sure about the video card in your computer LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS.
You shouldn't have any problems with the way the viewer is currently set up.

Then you can put this subdirectory "on your path."  Use an *editor*, not a word
processor, and edit your autoexec.bat:

edit c:\autoexec.bat

This uses the editor that comes with dos 5.  If you don't use this editor, be
sure to save the autoexec.bat as an ASCII file, or you will NOT be able to boot
your computer again.  If you are unsure about this, leave this step OUT.

There is a line in the autoexec.bat file which begins with the words set path=
At the end of this line add the following:

;c:\vpic

Don't forget the ';' -- that's how does tells one entry from another.  Adding
this subdirectory to your path will allow you to type 'vpic' from any directory
and invoke the vpic gif viewer.  

If you did this, then reboot your computer now so the changes take effect.
Remember, this step can be dangerous and is not essential to get full use out
of this disc.

Now go back to the CDROM drive by typing the drive letter of your CDROM
drive:

X:

Change directories into a directory where you want to view the images.

cd \images\cats

or type

cd \images\dogs

If you edited your autoexec.bat, then you should be able to simply type

vpic 

and be able to view the images.  

If you didn't, then you'll have to type the whole path where vpic is.  There is
a copy on the CDROM in \vpic and there is a copy on your hard disk in \vpic.

Type

c:\vpic\vpic

This will bring up a screen which will allow you to select an image to view.

These instructions should tell you everything you need to know to get started
viewing pictures right away.
