On a more general scope, secrecy is usually the tip of an >"iceberg" associated with fear(s). If so, wonder what the fear(s) may be. It's a small article, so I'll reprint it all. On rereading it, I note that it doesn't actually specify privacy of families, but that was NASA's line last I heard, and I can't imagine who else's privacy would be involved. From the Grapevine section of Time, December 24, 1990 "Challenger: The Final Words" Nearly five years after the event, the legal wrangling continues over audiotapes of the space shuttle Challenger's final moments. Several news organizations (including Time) sued NASA under the Freedom of Information Act to disclose certain aspects of its investigation into the accident. Most eventually withdrew their actions, but the New York Times has continued to petition for tapes to back up a NASA transcript of cabin conversation. In the official version, the final comment is pilot Michael Smith's "uh-oh," indicating he might have been aware of impending danger. A federal appeals court agreed with NASA that releasing the voice material would constitute an invasion of privacy. George Freeman, a Times lawyer, says the paper has not decided if it will appeal. But a NASA investigator has confirmed suspicions that the astronauts were conscious of their fate, and that among the last words from the craft were those of one astronaut saying to another, "Give me your hand." Now, just because someone leaked it doesn't mean it's true, but it wouldn't be inconsistent with the evidence of the breathing packs that they were alive and at least briefly conscious. As to what NASA might be afraid of; they don't want people to be any madder at them then they are now, and this would certainly put them in a poor light, particularly because of their decision not to install an escape system. Not that I think that almost certainly injured astronauts would have much chance to escape from a badly damaged, tumbling cabin with the current system. Still, I would prefer to have the chance to try, even if only for the distraction. Two and half minutes is a long, long time to helplessly wait to die. -- Laura Burchard lhb6v@virginia.edu lhb6v@virginia.bitnet October 3: After 45 bitter years of separation, East and West Germany unite to form a single nation, chastened by the past, hopeful for the future. No, if the Soviets charge $10M for the trip then the people running the lottery will make (GROSS REVENUE) the difference between their ticket sales and $10M. So if they sell $40M in tickets, they will gross $30M. If they sell $2M in tickets, they will LOSE $8M. But what happens in this case? Does the winner still get his ride? More importantly, if in this case NO ONE gets his ride, will the people who bought tick- ets get their money back? And do the promoters have insurance to cover the lawsuit your loved ones will bring if you are the "winner" and are killed or injured? Dammit, this deal STINKS! If someone wants to promote a scam, fine, but DON'T do it in "sci.space" and DON'T ask the readers of "sci.space" to make phone calls SUPPORTING the scam. >ps - If you think the lottery organizers are making too much money, >start your own lottery and drive the profit down. I didn't say that they were GOING to make a profit. I said they are going to make GROSS REVENUE. They will only make a profit if they sell enough tickets to cover their expenses. I believe that if they open their books up you will see that they have very little chance of making a profit -- that the whole thing is a scam and that they have NO INTENTION of providing anybody with a ride into space. This is what the local DA thinks, and I happen to agree with him. >You will, of >course, donate your profits to charity or extra prizes. What profits? I wouldn't start this business PRECISELY because I don't think there ARE profits! >What? You're not willing to dirty your hands? Then stop trying to >protect me from something I want and am willing to pay for. I'm not trying to protect you. You are free to throw your money down any rathole you wish to. But you are NOT free to ask others to do so; that constitutes FRAUD and is punishable by law. I'm trying to warn those others that this is a scam. >If you don't want it, don't buy. I don't want the savings and loan bailout, either, but I'm stuck with that. I didn't want the junk bond market collapse, but I'm stuck with that. This scam is small potatoes compared to Keating's and Milken's; it's a Texas-size scam, not a USA-size scam. ------------------------------ End of SPACE Digest V13 #019 *******************
