According to "The photographic Atlas of the planets" Europa is an ice world. The smoothness of the surface and lack of craters suggest upsurges of water. Water under the ice crust could be a result of tidal fluctuations as it passes Jupiter and the other moons. Could also be a result of internal heating due to a molten core due to radioactive decay. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Dean Haley | University Of New England, Armidale _--_|\ | | dhaley@mihi.une.edu.au | N.S.W, Australia. / \ | | | \_.--.^/ | | | @ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |"Well, you presumably believe that the best solution that this omnipotent| |God could find to the problem of Adam eating an apple, was to pop down to| |Earth as a man, get nailed to a cross, come alive again, and then ascend | |into Heaven. It started from a ram scoop and was turned into a superconduction loop held from the center by lines. It works on the premise of skipping around in LEO by working against the Earths magnetic field until it gets into the solar wind and can deflect it, gaining something like .02 g, much better than Ion Drive. Really good for interplanetary travel. Possible application as brake in interstellar flight, eliminating half of fuel load. The article (about ten pages long) has a lot of mathmatics to back it up, way over my head. Fascinating implications! (818) 354-5011 TOPEX/POSEIDON STATUS REPORT August 28, 1992 The TOPEX/Poseidon satellite entered into safe hold mode on Aug. 27, 1992 at approximately 11:13 a.m. PDT. This incident occurred during the inclination maneuver about 6 seconds from the end of the propulsion burn. The inclination maneuver was successful and placed the satellite in the proper 66 degree inclination toward the Earth. Project managers have determined that the safe hold mode was the result of a "bug" in the software code which set the failure detection correction limit for a roll angle of 3 degrees, not 7 degrees as intended. This was a result of residual LANDSAT code which did not correlate to the program design language. All satellite hardware is functioning properly based on detailed review of the maneuver playback data. Reconfiguration of the satellite back to the standard configuration prior to safe hold mode is in process at this time and is expected to be completed tonight. The solar array was offset to -55 degrees at 12:45 p.m. PDT today prior to the start of occultation. This was done so as to not overcharge the batteries when the Sun hits the solar array after coming from eclipse. Since the inclination maneuver goals were achieved, the flight team is proceeding with the nominal maneuver campaign. There are four more maneuvers to go. In-Plane Maneuver One is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1992. The NASA radar altimeter was turned off when the satellite entered the safe hold mode. It will be turned back on about 6:30 p.m. PDT tonight. Initial data from the NASA altimeter prior to the incident looked very good. ###### ___ _____ ___ /_ /| /____/ \ /_ /| Ron Baalke | baalke@kelvin.jpl.nasa.gov | | | | __ \ /| | | | Jet Propulsion Lab | ___| | | | |__) |/ | | |__ M/S 525-3684 Telos | Optimists live longer /___| | | | ___/ | |/__ /| Pasadena, CA 91109 | than pessimists. |_____|/ |_|/ |_____|/ | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1992 23:29:20 GMT From: TS Kelso Subject: Two-Line Orbital Element Set Format Newsgroups: sci.space As a service to the satellite user community, the following description of the NORAD two-line orbital element set format is uploaded to sci.space and rec.radio.amateur.misc on a monthly basis. Newsgroups: sci.space The most current orbital elements from the NORAD two-line element sets are carried on the Celestial BBS, (513) 427-0674, and are updated daily (when possible). Documentation and tracking software are also available on this system. The Celestial BBS may be accessed 24 hours/day at 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 bps using 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. Element sets (also updated daily) and some documentation and software are available via anonymous ftp from archive.afit.af.mil (129.92.1.66) in the directory pub/space. As a service to the satellite user community, the most current of these elements are uploaded weekly to sci.space.news and rec.radio.amateur.misc. This week's elements are provided below. - Current Two-Line Element Sets #045b - GMS 4 1 20217U 89 70 A 92236.68913091 -.00000261 00000-0 99999-4 0 4472 2 20217 0.2672 321.9197 0001792 206.8038 Considering Magellan only has a radar mapper and an altimeter as its only science instruments, it is not really equipped to observe a burn-up of a Pioneer Venus. Interestingly enough, two years ago Pioneer Venus made an attempt to image Magellan as it was executing its burn for Venus orbit insertion, but that turned out unsuccessful. ___ _____ ___ /_ /| /____/ \ /_ /| Ron Baalke | baalke@kelvin.jpl.nasa.gov | | | | __ \ /| | | | Jet Propulsion Lab | ___| | | | |__) |/ | | |__ M/S 525-3684 Telos | Optimists live longer /___| | | | ___/ | |/__ /| Pasadena, CA 91109 | than pessimists. |_____|/ |_|/ |_____|/ | ------------------------------ End of Space Digest Volume 15 : Issue 149 ------------------------------
