The SLM804 is essentially an Oasis LaserPro. Atari's SLM804 drum and toner assemblies are merely repackaged LaserPro units, which are available from reliable sources, other than Atari. If you get into a bind and can't wait any longer, you might try one of the U.S. dealers who normally stock these normal replaceables. Every page that I printed had a spot about the size of a large postage stamp on the left edge about half way down. This spot was not a dark are it was a light area. I had added two toner refills at this time. The last time I added toner instead of just sticking the new toner supply in and dumping the toner I dumped all the old toner that was left in the toner hopper into a plastic bag and threw it away. I could see hard chunks in the bottom and didn't feel that they should be there. I then used high pressure air to blow away all the rest of the toner from the hopper. Remember to make sure that everything is clean when you are finished with a procedure like this. I then put the new toner in and solved my problem. The only thing that I should have done and didn't was used Initial Toner instead of Refill Toner. I don't know the difference but there is probably a reason for it. I bought it sight unseen, and when I got it, there were no manuals or disks with it. I've found someone to copy the manual and disks for me, and I have the Diablo emulator from the ST Library, but that isn't the problem (yet)... When I turn it on (with it hooked to the computer), the red light that is a circle with a vertical line through the top comes on, and stays on. That's as far as it gets. I've cleaned it thoroughly, checked the drum (in subdued light), etc. The toner is almost empty, but I'm told the triangle-dots light would come on if that was the problem. Some people I've spoken to have surmised that it might be a bad heating unit or something like that. If anyone has any ideas, I'd REALLY appreciate it. I'd rather not spend anymore money on it than I have to. The dealers I've called all tell me to mail it to them. Thanks! If so then ask to borrow their toner/drum hopper. Install it in your unit for a test. If it powers up ok then it may well be the lack of toner giving your problems... if not then CAREFULLY check out the two charger wires and make sure both are intact and making a solid connection. If all the above fails then you may have a heater problem that could be major or minor... depends on what's gone bad on it. At that point I'm afraid you'll need an expert to check it out. I really didn't have the back door propped open. I have a switch installed in the front of the SLM that is in series with the door switch and sends the same signal. Thats what Bruce at B&C told me to do to quite the noise of the laser when I bought it over 4 years ago. I know I should do the Phantom thing but I'm a procrastonator. (spelling?) looks like I might need Sentry also. Robert Johnstone Modesto, CAlif ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 34 Mon Nov 09, 1992 G.ANDERSON at 22:08 EST Rob... If I recall the SLM-804 is based on the old TEC 1301 printer engine. It shares parts and such with the Oysis LaserPro series so units like heaters, rollers, toner, drums, etc should be interchangable... First test out your Drum/Toner Hopper before looking into the heater or other possible problem areas.. and verify that your corona wires are good. I don't know if Atari ever released a total Tech manual for the 804, and I'll wager that no SAMs book was ever done on it. Your only hope there is to see if an Atari Service Center is in your general area and ask them, or see if there is an Oysis dealer near you... but do this AFTER you verify the hopper, wires, etc, are not the problem. You might call Atari... ask them about sending it in for repair/replacement and see how much that would cost. The 804 is really nice, but it's suppoed to be easier to get supplies for the 605 since a lot of printers share the print engine (like Epson, I think). Good luck and keep me posted. Gregg ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 35 Mon Nov 09, 1992 J.PIERCE5 [Rob] at 22:24 EST Well, the toner came today. I put it in, and I got a green light. Darn it. Any new ideas? Rob ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 36 Tue Nov 10, 1992 G.ANDERSON at 21:27 EST Strange... try reseating ALL your connectors, corona wires, and clean the wire contacts between the hopper and the motherboard. Is your unit the last in the daisy chain? That's the way I have mine setup. What software refused to recognise the printer? Did you have it set for an SLM printer? A LOT of older stuff has to use the Diablo or Epson emulator in order to print to an SLM.. only the better DTP/CAD/WP stuff have SLM drivers built it (Calamus, PageStream, DynaCADD, WordUp, Callig- rapher, TimeWorks' DTP, etc). Just powering the system down & back up should NOT have kept the unit from going 'green'. This is a new one. Gregg ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 37 Wed Nov 11, 1992 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:50 EST Robert, You asked for it and you got it. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 38 Wed Nov 11, 1992 J.PIERCE5 [Rob] at 22:21 EST The software I mean is the actual Diablo driver, the TEST and SDUMP programs. Apparently, they look to the interface for info, and don't find it. That's my guess at least. The printer is plugged into the back of my Mega STE, so it's the only thing in the DMA chain. I cleaned out the drum today (the area that shifts the used toner into the used toner container), and vaccuumed the roller on the toner hopper. I then got a green light again. But the software didn't recognize the printer (again). I even opened up the interface box and reseated the two socketed chips in there. Still nothing. I turned the printer off, then back on after about ten seconds. I got a green light again. Then I turned it off for a few minutes. Now it's back to red light only. Neat, huh? Rob ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 41 Sat Nov 14, 1992 S.KALEITA [SAK] at 14:20 EST Are you letting the printer get up to speed before you even boot you computer? ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 42 Sat Nov 14, 1992 R.JOHNSTONE1 [Robert J] at 18:53 EST Ken Van, Talked to Steve Decker yesterday and the check went out in todays mail. Thanks, To Everyone: I am wondering if anyone knows of a BUFFER for the SLM804. When I do a complicated print job with UltraScript I am looking at 5 to 10 minutes or so for the frist printing. Sometimes I want several copies of what I am printing but want to do a proof first so I leave the print counter set to 1. If there is such a thing as a BUFFER either a hardware device or in software I would be able to then tell it to print the additional count that I need and it should take right off from the already created output to the printer from the computer. If anyone knows where I can find such a device I would like to get one. Robert Johnstone Modesto, CAlif ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 43 Sat Nov 14, 1992 G.ANDERSON at 21:11 EST Sorry Robert, but as far as I know there's NO way to make a buffer for the SLM printers. These are lasers and require at least one Meg of RAM to hold the printed image for printing, so any buffer would be VERY large and rather expensive even if it was possible. Your ST is acting not only as a computer when using the SLM but as the printer's controller, data buffer, and what-have- you. This allows for a lower priced printer and, usually, for faster printing as well if the software was written right. UltraScript, IMHO, was NOT designed to provide max performance on the ST/SLM platform and takes a lot longer to print than it really should. Though I still have it, somewhere, I pretty well gave up on UltraScript long ago in favor of Calamus and PageStream's native print modes. They are MUCH faster, more convient, take less disk space, and (on the SLM anyway) provide at least as high a print Quality for most users. Gregg ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 44 Sun Nov 15, 1992 DOUG.W [ICD RT] at 11:55 EST Robert, The 5 to 10 minutes you are talking about is simply the amount of time the UltraScript uses to generate the image. It's probably simple and easy, but cannot find answer in manual, nor have I been able to get it to accidently do it. I'm using it on occasion inside MultiDesk Deluxe, so can this be the problem? ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 46 Sun Nov 15, 1992 R.JOHNSTONE1 [Robert J] at 18:48 EST >Robert, > The 5 to 10 minutes you are talking about is simply the amount of time the >UltraScript uses to generate the image. The data doesn't get sent to out to >the printer until the paper actually starts moving. > >--Doug > >---------- Doug, I realize that the time is consumed while UltraScript is doing its work and that the once generated the data is sent out to the SLM804 in a heart- beat. What I guess I really would like to see would be a way to hold the data in Ultrascript for some more use. Maybe an accessory that would directly talk to the running Ultrascript with buttons like [ Print & Hold | Continue Printing | Dump Data ] . I know the correct way would be to have it in the program but I don't really thing Imagen is going anywhere with Ultrascript... Robert Johnstone Modesto, CAlif ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 47 Sun Nov 15, 1992 EXPLORER.5 [BOB] at 18:59 EST As Doug said, the time spent waiting on printing to an SLM is almost entirely used by the program creating the image in memory. That means a buffer wouldn't do any good anyway; once the image gets created, it gets printed at DMA speeds. Bob ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 48 Sun Nov 15, 1992 V.PATRICELL1 [Vince] at 19:03 EST Perhaps someone will program a software buffer for use with the SLM lasers when MultiTOS is released. This sounds like it should be doable, especially since the new Atari computers can have much larger RAM. ................................Vince ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 49 Mon Nov 16, 1992 R.WALTERS7 [Randy] at 00:23 EST Chief Here is an excerpt from the Laserbrain doc file: " A font may be selected by using control codes that represent the following attributes: * letter quality * proportional spacing * ELITE print width (the default is PICA) * condensed * expanded * subscript * superscript * bold * italics Each of these features can be turned on or off individually (using the standardized Epson compatible control codes) or jointly with others (using the expanded control codes 'set font' and 'set style'). LASERBRAIN then tries to locate a font in its buffer that has attributes matching the current control code settings. Each font held in the emulator's buffer carries an identification. This ID has two parts: the font number and the font attributes. Both of these parameters can be set for each font individually. From the font number the emulator can tell whether the font should be used where letter quality (LQ) and/or proportionally spaced output is requested. LQ prop. font no. used no no 1 yes no 2 no yes 3 yes yes 4 The font attributes tell the emulator for which combination of the remaining seven attributes the font should be used. If you, for example, use the standard control code to switch to letter quality ("x"1), and proportional spacing is disabled, the printer driver activates the font that carries a font number of 2 (see table) and has font attributes that correspond with the remaining seven settings. If the buffer does not contain a font that meets these requirements, LASERBRAIN either uses the system character set (YORK 16) or, if the font number was located, but there is no font with matching attributes, it uses the font that can be found with the largest number of matching attributes and which has no undesired attributes set. If a font without any attributes set is requested, but all fonts currently installed have attributes set, the system character set (YORK 16) will be selected. The emulator only recognizes a font by its font number and attribute settings, it is not at all concerned with what the font in question actually looks like. You can therefore declare a quite ordinary font as bold and italic by setting the bold and italic attribute flags from within the emulator's control dialog. " Now in layman's terms. Let's say that I want to print a document that I have created with First Word Plus (Henceforth, FWP). I had typed in the document using the bold selection within FWP. I select print and select draft quality. FWP then sends the document to be printed. Laserbrain sees the control codes and selects the font that matches the settings. Thus, if I had the font Elite 50 set to font number 3 and the emphasized button highlighted, the document would be printed using Elite 50. (Change the font number by clicking on the < or >. Choose attributes by clicking on the box next to the name. Don't forget to save your settings.) Let me know if you need any further assistance. Regards Randy ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 50 Mon Nov 16, 1992 K.SPRINGER1 [CHIEF] at 23:20 EST Randy, Roger on the manual info you have type in, or pasted from the manaul documentation. :-) I read that a half a dozen times, and understand it. >LASERBRAIN then tries to >locate a font in its buffer that has attributes matching the current control >code settings. This sentence from the manual indicates to me that you should be able to select a font with appropriate settings (bold, expanded, etc.) from within the LB dialog box. This is what I am trying to figure out how to do, if possible. After all, when LB is run for the very first time, some of the fonts already have some attributes set. Since the user obviously didn't set them, they were set somehow. A GEnie user over in IdeaList said his LB was set to default to Elite 34. My defaulted to Elite 50 after loading that font/configuration file. So it seems to me that there must be a way to, say, assign Elite 50 to font number 4 with italics and superscript on, for example, exit the dialog box, reenter the dialog box, and these settings remain. It sounds as if you are doing everything correctly. Are you using LB as a MDX or as a resident accessory within MultiDesk Deluxe? I have not tried using it within MDD, but would speculate that used as a resident ACC it should work. First of all, try deleting all of the fonts except the York 16 font. Then reload the fonts and set the attributes and font numbers for each one. Finally, save the configuration. If that does not work, leave me your phone # in e-mail and the best time that you can be reached and I'll call you. What is currently normal is when I want to use it, I clear all resident accs from MDD and then load LB only. (Currently using LB only when using IdeaList) When done, I clear LB and reload normal accessory setup. Now that I'm further "into " LB than I thought I would ever get, I should go back and load it into one of the regular six slots, and see if that makes a difference. I don't think it should, but you never know. I'll let you know if it does. Ken ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 53 Thu Nov 19, 1992 J.LEHETT2 [J.J. I know the toner may need replaced soon in it, but it prints out on xerox paper just fine for now and no 'toner needed' lights come on... its just that I looked in the hopper, and it is getting down there. Anyways, my question concerns envelopes. I have tried a couple different types of envelopes, and still seem to get the following problem: on the areas where the envelope is double or triple papered (on the back where it joins together) I get very light blacks. On the lower portion of the envelope, all is fine. I have tried with the flap of the envelope opened and close with slightly better results with the flap opened (less paper overlap), but still not quite usable. So is there any suggestions on how to get a nice printing quality over the entire page of the envelope? I guess it has something to do with fact that part of the envelope is single page, some double, and even small portions triple thickness. Is there a specific part of the laser I should check/change/clean for this kind of effect I am experiencing? Are others printing envelopes just fine? Thanks in advance! J.J. J. and J.P.C. - I don't know how you are printing your envelopes, but you might want to try Synergy Resources Gemvelope 2. It has fantastic controls over placement of the return and main address. You might be able to position one or both addresses to a position on the envelope where there are fewer layers. As for crinkling, in my experience, that is definitely related to quality of the envelope, as well as the printer. The cheaper the envelope, the more it crinkles. I did the ICD fix; it doesn't help. There is no fix except to bypass the ICD host and use the SCSI port on the TT for your external HD. ICD did say that they would exchange my old HOST for a new one for $99.00. But they didn't say weather the new model solved the problem, they didn't seem to really know. The way I worked around the problem is, My host is in a separate small box with the DMA cable for the ST and a 50 pin SCSI cable for the HD, also a cable for the power to the host from the HD power supply. I installed a 50 pin ribbon to 50 pin SCSI cable connector to my HD case. Now when I need to use the HD with my ST, I just use the cable combination with the inline host adapter. And when I use the HD with my TT, I just use a SCSI cable. I have heard that there is a such thing as a SCSI switch. One of these would make it very easy to switch between ST and TT with my set up. When I opened the top, removed the basket that holds the toner cartridge and drum, then removed the paper, the thin wire (corona?) at the bottom of the printer broke. It's the one nearest to where the paper enters the printer. First, I called Atari tech support and they said all I needed to do was buy a new drum kit ($150.00) and it would include a new wire. Wrong. They must have thought I had an SLM-804, which does include the wire with a drum kit. I'm not 100% sure which engine the new SLM really uses, but I do know that it is drum/toner compatible with a LOT more systems than the 804 was. The SLM605 has a TEC LB-1305 engine. It might be that Epson used the same engine to build their laser printers, but than they have certainly different electronica (logic) inside. Epson could only be of help with supplies or general problems in the engine but not in the SLM specific logic. I don't agree with that, the SLM 605 has its own internal test procedure and you need a service manual the have some test reference points. A standard photocopier service can only check some general points like clean wires in the chargers, clean way for the laser beam etc. If any specific SLM605 controller hardware logic fails than they can't repair it. I'm involved in projects with new products, long before they arrive for the public. One of my projects was solving problems in the SLM804. Several units in a hot summer started gray printing and replacing all the logic didn't help. We found out that the problem was caused by slipping belts. The grease on the gears under the belts got thin because of the hot summer. The gears spread the thin grease on the belts which made them slipping and caused a weak toner transport and therefore gray printing. We are a small company and together we do the job. Besides being unsure which codes to use for this (I think the underline ones are clear enough in the manual, but not the font), I'm not sure I have the emulator and support files installed correctly. I'm using DeskManager33, and have a setup file for Roots, which will run the appropriate AUTO programs and load the ACCs I want. Since this would allow me to autoboot, I have DIAB630.PRG, SETUP630.PRG, and SETUP630.RSC all in the AUTO folder. I have a separate folder, SLM, for the fonts. I have the AUTO folder arranged so DIAB630.PRG runs before SETUP630.PRG. (I'm not sure why SETUP630.PRG has to be in the AUTO folder, though, since it seems you only run it when you want to change your settings that are saved to DIAB630.PRG, and you have to run it manually to do so, except for settings that are controlled also by SETUP630.ACC.) Curiously, when I run SETUP630.PRG after booting the computer, the Examine font menu selection is grayed out, and I'm told that the emulator has to be in RAM or something like that. I'd appreciate if someone could verify my setup, and tell me how to put printer codes into a program that has a setup for codes (such as 027 045). I just replaced the drum and toner in my 804. For some reason, the output is not very crisp (looks kinda faded, blacks aren't that great). I replaced the toner the same time as the drum, but I heard something about starter toner, could this be my problem? Oh, I have tried fooling with the density setting in the back to no avail, and the drum type is set per instructions that came with the drum. Thanks in advance for the help. Jeff ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 95 Tue Dec 22, 1992 S.WINICK at 05:55 EST Jeff, When you installed the new drum, did you do so in very subdued light? Nothing will kill a drum faster that exposure to bright light. The drums surface coating is very light sensitive. Weak output is generally related to the drum itself. Using a new Initial Toner on occassion will help restore the thick coating of toner on the distribution roller and help restore the SLM's ability to produce those deep blacks (like when it was new). If the toner coating on the distribution roller gets too thin, the print output can also get a little weak. An Initial Toner MUST be used whenever the hopper is overhauled and/or the distribution roller is cleaned. We've also found that recommending the use of an Initial Toner cartridge after each drum change helps restore a little extra zip to the SLM. You might want to consider that the next time you need toner. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 96 Wed Dec 23, 1992 ATARI.BENLUX [W. Gregg ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 100 Sat Dec 26, 1992 S.WINICK at 05:50 EST Gregg, Happy holiday to you and yours as well. Looking forward to seeing you again next month. I'll be back from my January Colorado trip before you arrive back in Asheville, so I may get to play with the T-25 and 520mb drive a little myself --- after all, we really _DO_ need to have a little burn-in time with every system to make sure everything's working just right. ;-] We've been using mostly Quantums and Maxtors, so make sure to bring the Fujitsu manual with you so we can get all the jumpers set properly on the drive. (oops..... we've slipped off topic. Sorry SysOps. Back to our regularly scheduled programming ;-). So... how's the laser printer working? (catch 'ya in E-mail ;-). Who knows, if everything works as well as I think it will you may start selling Fujitsu drives too... By the way, I was looking over a 1990 PC magazine... prices for drives really have dropped since then, in a BIG way. Pity they didn't continue at that rate, we'd be using 1Gig units at around ten cents a meg or so by now . As for the SLM... now comes the BIG worry. Will it survive another PCS move? I'll be taking the drum/toner out and packing them (Well Wrapped) separate from the printer in their own slots... Gonna loose a lot of toner as I didn't finish the last cart as fast as I thought I would. When I stop to think about it, I've gotten a LOT of good use out of this Mega4/SLM combo... with only a few glitchs along the way. It will be great to have a real dealer nearby again too. Enjoy your trip to Colorado.. I've been there several times and LOVE that area. With Winter and all you won't be able to take in Estes Park or the Continental Divide, a pity as both are WELL worth the visit. Pikes Peak will also be closed by now. Still, get on the interstate and just drive out past the Eisenhour Tunnel and enjoy the views.... As soon as I finish this up I'll be boxing the beast up for shipping, they come tomorrow and I've got to have everything ready for them. Almost two months without my Atari.... however will I survive? To all...... I'm going to be off line for a while. After 20 GREAT years with the US Air Force I'm retiring and moving to the Ashville NC area. Hopefully I'll be able to start a second career there, wish me luck. So until I can get back on line, take care of yourselves and keep the Faith. We've got a great computer here (ST/TT/Falcon) with a great future. So keep on 'keeping on' and keep our friends at Atari 'on their toes'. Keep the debate honest, fair, and interesting. That way we will ALL benifit from it and have better products in the future as the result. See you all in a few months (or sooner if I can get my Brother in Law's PC to talk GEnie, I'll be visiting him in Detroit before heading to NC). When the photo-electric effect is reduced (old drum) than you can see that in long print sessions, the heat of such a session reduces the photo electric effect more and more. If you switch your printer off for a while your drum gets some time to recover. If you drum is new, than it might be caused by the high voltage supplies of the chargers BUT DON'T TOUCH THAT yourself. I am trying to use the 804 with a TT030, but seem to be getting a "Ghosting" effect on my printouts. I checked into this and is seems that an unisolated clock on my ICD Host is the culprit. I contacted ICD and they mailed me a doc detailing a fix for this situation. Heres the problem. in the docs, it says to check to see what rev controller board I have: Rev 2: Has 74LS244 piggybacked to U3 Rev 4: Has this change on the board already. My problem is that I have a Rev one board, and this change hasn't been made to it. I called Atari Tech support, and they said that this was a change not sanctioned by them (it's supposedly a mod to increase the buffer). I find this difficult to believe since it looks like this revision was done at the factory, and the rev # on the board was changed. Since you have done some work with the older SLM804's, is it possible to find out why this change was made, and possibly, get some instructions for upgrading my controller board? I would appreciate any help you can give me. You can respond here, or leave me mail to J.Leblanc3. Thanks, Jeff ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 109 Mon Jan 25, 1993 D.RENNER2 [HONDA] at 01:02 EST Regarding the "ghosting" problem with the SLM 804; It seems this problem (which I have experienced) is related in some way to the order in which the connections are made in the Laser/Controller/HD setup. What corrects the problem for me is to "incorrectly" connect the SLM controller's built in cable to my external hard drive, then connect the HD and computer with a DMA cable. Of course, I am using a 1040 STe and not a TT, therefore I don't know if this will correct the problem in your case. What I found to work was hookin up the SLM connections opposite to the way described in the SLM manual. ICD did a conversion to my SLM controller which you described, but this did not correct the problem (I have the older version 1). It is also possible that the ghosting or "echo" that you are experiencing may be the result of exceeding a total of 36-inches in the DMA cabling. This, according to ICD, can also create this effect and using shorter cabling may be a fix. If the above works, one subsequent problem may occur: On my system, I have been successful in getting rid of the echo/ghost through the "backwards" connections of the SLM/DMA cabling, but as a result my system will not boot from the hard drive properly. The system will boot to the desktop as if no hard drive were attached and I have to reset the system, which then boots from the hard drive. Don't ask me why, but it works. It is an annoyance at best, but it does resolve one problem while creating another. I have not been able to find a solution to this booting problem, but then I am so used to it that I don't really care anymore, as long as my printout is ok. hope this helps. Thanks. |) | |)O|) Robert Goff ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 112 Wed Jan 27, 1993 J.LEBLANC3 [Jeff] at 05:28 EST Denis, I have done the same as you, when I first connected the Laser to the TT in the "Proper" way, my printout was almost unreadable. I then connected the host adapter (and hard drive) to the TT ADSCI port and daisy chained the laser controller off of that. That did seem to cut down the noise that is causing my problem, but it has not completely eradicated it. I then called Howard at ICD and he acknowledged that there was a problem with some of the older ST HA (Classic Type, which I have) with an unisolated clock. He snail mailed me a copy of the fix for the laser. That's what point I'm at now. The only problem is that I must have a VERY EARLY version of the laser controller, because, it is not a rev 2 or 4 as called for in the fix documentation. It seems that Atari added a 74LS244N chip (Piggy backed onto U3) for a quick fix (Rev 2), and later incorporated this change into the controller motherboard (Rev 4). The ICD fix must be done to the 74LS244N chip, but there is none installed in my controller! I called Atari Tech support, and spoke to one of the Techs, and he says that this mod is unauthorized by Atari, and was done to increase the print buffer, and I can find this mod on Genie or Ci$. I have been unable to do so up to now. I also called Art in dealer Tech support and he was supposed to call me back with the required info (2-3 weeks ago) but I'm still waiting. Effectively, I have about a 45 pound paperweight/doorstop here. If anyone else can give me some help with this, I would greatly appreciate it! BTW Dennis, thanks for your help. Jeff ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 113 Wed Jan 27, 1993 SANDY.W [sysop] at 12:07 EST Jeff - I have a similar problem with my TT. (I didn't have it with the old mega.) The way it was explained to me, the fix Howard sent was more for a random pixel problem than ghosting, so it might not help you anyway. Since you have a TT, I think you have two other options. One, is an A-B switch for the ADSCI port. With this switch, the laser would not be going through your external HD at all, thus bypassing the host, which should correct the problem. I make no claims as to how safe this is, or if you would need to powerdown to turn the switch. Also, since the HD would not be accessed when the laser was "on", you would need to be using your internal HD for anything that required HD access during printing. The other option is to bypass the ICD host by connecting the external drive directly to the SCSI port, and then the laser is the only thing on the ADSCI port. I think this idea appeals to me the most, but I am not clear just where the host/copy protection fits into this fix, so please don't ask me for details. I will probably end up ripping everything apart, then calling Howard again for specific instructions. I do know that ICD now sells a version of their software (the PRO version) that does not require their host. This has been discussed in the ICD RoundTable. ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 114 Wed Jan 27, 1993 B.REHBOCK [BILL@ATARI] at 12:40 EST Robert Goff... Whether the problem can directly be attributed to a problem in the design of the host adaptor or inside the computer itself is really unimportant as long as the problem can be easily solved. In most cases, the simplest solution is to eliminate the unnecessary hardware. External SCSI hard drives used with the TT030 really do not need any host adapter. They should be directly connected to the TT030's SCSI port using a standard SCSI cable. Although I wasn't able to take advantage of any of the suggestions, I did learn a lot and would like to share my experience here in case it helps someone else in the future. A broken corona wire in an SLM804 is easy. You get a new one when you purchase a new drum. Not so easy on the SLM605. Unless you know someone who can "restring" the corona wire onto the module, you need to do what I did. First, call Epson America (1-800-922-8911) to find out where the nearest Epson service center is from you (as EPL-6000 Epson laser parts work perfectly). Either go to or phone the service center and tell them you need a "transfer charge block" for an Epson EPL-6000 laser printer (part number HGMBK-08601). I was charged $40.00 for this part (they could have restrung my block, but they have a minimum $70.00 charge for labor...the whole new part, already strung, is a better deal!!). Then all you have to do is to open up your SLM605, remove the toner cartridge and drum, take out the charger block with the broken wire (one small screw, right in the middle of the block), and replace with the new one. Back in business. Hope this helps someone else avoid the month-and-a-half it took me to work all this out. Cheers. Joe Schram ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 126 Sun Feb 21, 1993 S.WINICK at 07:24 EST Joe, That's the going rate for a new SLM804 drum kit. It's not absolutely essential to get a new starter toner cartridge when you replace the drum, but the next time you need toner, a starter toner won't hurt. If there are any 'thin' spots on the distribution roller or you've accidentally scraped off the toner on a part of it while servicing the machine, I'd recommend completely purging the hopper (a time consuming and messy job) and starting fresh with a new starter toner. There are several reputable dealers active here online who will be glad to provide you with whatever you need to service the SLM. Choose whoever you prefer and drop him a note in GEnieMail to place your order. I also wrote a column on servicing the SLM804 for GEnieLamp a while back, complete with pictures. I don't remember offhand which issue it was, but could check my back issues if you'd like. All issues of GEnieLamp are available for downloading from the GEnie Library. It's issue 237 file#21769 for anyone else that may want to read it. Very good article and written for people like me who don't have a munual. I bought the printer through an ad in a local newspaper and when I asked how many copies had been made on the machine, they said it was never used. It's very clean inside and the counter shows a dot for the first 2 digits and nothing for the other 3. The drum has a crystalized pattern on most of it and I was aware of this when I bought it. When I tested it I could see the pattern as a shaded area on the paper. The part of the drum that was good made a good copy in that area of the paper. The toner cartridge is labeled Initial Toner and has lots of toner in it. Is Initial Toner the same as starter toner? It may actually be an unused machine that was stored or handled poorly. My limited knowlege is telling me with a new drum kit I will have a new printer. I did about a dozen test prints and the counter still reads the same. Thanks for the help... The problems that I've seen are when people have plugged in the HD and the laser printer, and either not turned on the laser printer, or turned it off. Guaranteed, you will get very scary messages about your data, and maybe even lose data off the HD. Remember to power up the laser printer first, wait for the ready light to come on, then boot the HD, and when it's ready, bring the rest of the system up. best regards, Bob ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 149 Wed Mar 24, 1993 P.POKORSKI [Hoser] at 20:33 EST Lads: There's no question 'bout it. There's a *shadowing* problem. The laser is connected to the STe; the hard drive is connected to the SLMC605. When I remove the hard drive, boot w/o hard drive, load diablo emulator and print, the text is sharp and clear with *no* shadow. Whenever the printer/hard drive's connected (doesn't matter which one's first in chain), I encounter the prob. A recommendation was made to me to try a shorter dma cable 'tween the hard drive unit and the SLMC605 (like an 18 incher). Also, ICD mentioned a capacitor mod that I have to obtain more info on. I'll tell ya'-I'm not real happy. I sold my Deskjet 500. Right now, as another message stated here, I have a 45 lb. paperweight. I WOULDOT recommend the SLM605 to anyone that has an ICD host adaptor. This forum should have stated such (I've read all the messages here prior to purchasing the printer). My options are not too pleasant-particularly if I have to purchase another host adapter, backup my harddrive, re-install everything, etc., etc. I've been an Atari user for many years. Mark Stefani ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 175 Sun Apr 04, 1993 BOB-BRODIE [Atari Corp.] at 19:56 EDT Mark, The main advantage of the SLM series is speed. Even with programs like OutBurST, you cannot match the speed of the SLMs. Moving the signal out the parallel port is no match for the DMA output speed of the SLM. The HP is a higher rez printer. Is that worth the wait? It's up to you. Personally, I'd stack the performance of the SLMs with Calamus up against ANY publishing platform. Mac, PC, whatever. A TT030 with a SLM and Calamus SL is the fastest system on the planet. A TT030 with Calamus and an HP-4 might come in second. best regards, Bob Brodie Director of Communications Atari Corp. I'm definitely hooked on the speed of the 804. The print quality was very poor when I got it, but a thorough cleaning and some help from Sheldon Winnick and local Atari dealer has cleaned up 98% of the problem. (I live in the boonies, and have to chance doing everything myself.) The only problem left to figure out is what I think is a problem with printing some raster areas. It may be I am asking the 804 to do something it can't, but I don't know how to find that out yet. I just sent a sample to another GEnie user and 804 owner, but have not heard from him. The same raster areas print absolutely gorgeous on the Fujitsu, although it does print darker. The 804 seems to have a wider range in this regard. Fujitsu toner carts are _damned_ expensive, but they include a new drum. Have a friend with an HPIV with Postscript option on his Mac. Maybe I can coerce him to bring it down to my place and we can play with Calamus. :-) As long as 300 dpi is okay, I'd go for the SLM printers. I'll be happy to send you a print out. J.P.C.- I don't agree at all that the PCs have caught up with Calamus and the SLM. One of the key issues isn't just CPU speed, but the amount of time that it takes to send the image to the printer. Ken, I agree that we need to come up with a solution to this problem. We want to see our customers with SLMs served on the Falcon. There will be other people that will have to look at adapters for their peripherals that connected up to the DMA port besides SLMs. Hard Disks come to mind. In many instances, all that will be needed is to have the Host Adapter removed, and plug into the SCSI port. However, Calamus/SLM users used to enjoy at least a 10-1 advantage over any system using the original version(s) of Postscript. Now, with Postscript having undergone several more revisions and faster, faster laserprinter RAM, along with faster CPU's, the Mac's and PC's have _almost_ closed the gap. I still think that Calamus offers _the best_ screen representation of what will be printed. This, in and of itself, is a tremendous time advantage in that it precludes printing many 'draft-copies' before everything is right. cordially, Jimmy Carter ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 186 Fri Apr 09, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:58 EDT I'm still a little confused about the Falcon030. STE sound, the Blitter, the Atari ACSI (harddisk) port are all examples of DMA devices. So, the Falcon030 has SCSI II and the SCSI cirquits have direct access to the memory (DMA). Yes, the Falcon030 doesn't have the well known ACSI (harddisk) port. Many people called the ACSI port the DMA port but that was not correct, the port does DMA but DMA was not it's name. Regards, Wilfred ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 188 Fri Apr 09, 1993 MJANSEN [Mark @ Atari] at 13:02 EDT Ken Van: In the original ST, the ACSI port was also called the "DMA" port; DMA refers to Direct Memory Access, and has to do with how much the machine's processor has to do to send data out the port. In general, having DMA is better than not. Perhaps the confusion lies in the fact that we're talking about three different things--SCSI, ACSI, and DMA. A computer with a SCSI port can have DMA or not, and you could theoretically design a machine with ACSI that *didn't* have DMA, but all STs have DMA. The Falcon030 has a SCSI port, not an ACSI port, which is why an SLM804 won't connect directly; DMA is a different issue. This was a design decision made because Atari felt, in the long run, it was better to let you connect readily available SCSI devices than to retain the Atari-specific ACSI port. Fortunately, SCSI makes it easy to hook up the huge hard disks required for the extensive audio/video work the Falcon so much enjoys. :-) I hope this helps, but if it doesn't, it's because I'm a software guy. :-) Mark @ Atari ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 189 Fri Apr 09, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 22:45 EDT Bob, I too would certainly applaud the arrival of high-rez printing as an addition to the Atari laser printer line! There had been some suggestions in the past of modification to the SLM 804 to make it 600DPI or more(just like has been done on the HP printers). And, speed of the HPLJ-4 can't compete with the SLM-804. Also, American Ribbon in Florida will recoat SLM-804 drums for $79.($72 for 6 or more) Ask for Dennis. Maybe we could find someone to coat the drums with polysilicon to produce a "lifetime" drum. Anyone out there interested in extending the life of an excellent printer? Jack BTW - I'll give you $0.10 on the dollar for your old(working) SLM-804. ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 194 Sat Apr 10, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 11:49 EDT Jack, I am very interested in your idea regarding a 'lifetime' drum for the 804. Does such a thing exist or are you talking of a beta product? I would also like to know how/where you refill your toners for 8.00!!! Are you permitted to pass along this info? Thanks. ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 195 Sat Apr 10, 1993 BOB-BRODIE [Atari Corp.] at 14:00 EDT Mark, I'm not aware of any plans to do another printer at this time. I could be wrong, but I believe that there are already a few SCSI laser printers on the market (no, I'm not prepared to name names). Bill is better equipped to tell you about high rez SCSI laser printers than I. Nevin, You're right, the HP-4 is terrific! I wish there was a way to up the speed is all. regards, Bob ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 196 Sat Apr 10, 1993 K.SPRINGER1 [FROZEN NORTH] at 14:23 EDT BOB-BRODIE Thanks for the offer, but the problem is the quality of the print of certain rasters generated by Touch Up and Calamus when printed on my 804 versus the output on my LJ+ clone. Worlds of difference, and basically impossible to explain via text. "A picture is worth a thousand words" is truly applicable in this case. DOUG7 and I have been beating this horse via email, and I sent him physical copies last week. I may be expecting the 804 to do something it can't, but have no way to find out. That's why I sent DOUG7 print outs from my lasers, hoping he could answer the question. If you have the time, could send you copies also (would need address), and you could post answer here and/or email. If time does not permit, tis okay. Would rather see Atari Corp. do something positive with Falcon and sell hundreds of thousands in US than answer my question about discontinued laser. May move up to laser with higher resolution, which would make question of raster printing on my 804 a moot point anyway. Ken S. ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 197 Sat Apr 10, 1993 P.NEREO [Philip] at 19:37 EDT Jack - Details please on refilling your own toner! What brand of toner? And do you have a phone no. for American Ribbon? Thanks. ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 198 Sat Apr 10, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 23:42 EDT Jack, I'm VERY interested in information about your toner refill and American Ribbon. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 199 Sun Apr 11, 1993 J.HICKEY6 at 00:44 EDT Philip, I had to try a few before I found some that work well. The one I'm using now is LASER TONER SX(in blue letters on black) and it has a blue label below that. # on bottle bottom is 971094. It came from a local company that recharges cartridges. Find one in your area and check it out. What I did was use a hacksaw to cut off the bottom of the cartridge to allow the lid to be easily replaced onto the toner hopper after I CAREFULLY refilled it. I would reccommend a face mask and a vacuum cleaner with special paper filter on its intake. From Computer Shopper page 648 Sept 92: American Ribbon Co. 1-800-327-1013 Lou, The March 9 issue of Computer Currents(S.F. Bay area free magazine) has an article on printers. Mentioned is the Kyocera Ecocys FS-1500A which uses an "...amorphous silicon print drum that never needs replacement." Maybe it's the same size as the 804? In the early 1970's, I was Chief Electronics Engineer for Unicorp, manufacturer of horizontal CVD(chemical vapor deposition) reactors for the semiconductor industry(Intel, Motorola, Siemens, Sony etc. were our customers). These reactors deposited silicon on wafers which were placed on an RF heated graphite slab. These deposits could be crystalline,or epitaxial growth, or amorphous or polysilicon growth. Growth of this amorphous silicon on cylindrical drums is straight. Our competitor at the time, Applied Material, did in fact use a cylindrical arrangement in its vertical reactor. A suitable drum material chosen for its thermal match to silicon(Kyocera probably has a ceramic that fills the bill) coupled with some hubs and a gear and voila! How many SLM 804's were built anyhow? And what about the Oasis? Anybody know where they're buried? The problem appears to be a *combo*: The DMA cable that I was using between the hard drive unit and the SLMC605 controller was 36" in length. I purchased an 18-incher from Computer STudio, installed it, and-voila-, it cleared up the *shadowing* problem! Well, almost. There was still a slight shadow. However, I had my SLMC605 resting atop many cables that come out of the back of my STe. When I moved the controller to a position where it had some distance between it and the cables, NO SHADOW! I wish this were the end of the tale. I just printed out a Pagestream document and noticed a slight shadow there! I'll keep pluggin' away! Regards, Paul ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 201 Sun Apr 11, 1993 ST.LOU [Lou Rocha] at 10:48 EDT Thank you for sharing that information, Jack. Sounds like refilling the toner is a tricky job. One the other hand, I have 25 empty toner cartridges with nowhere to go! :-) ------------ Category 14, Topic 11 Message 202 Sun Apr 11, 1993 J.HICKEY6 at 15:50 EDT Lou, with 25 cartridges, you should be able to make a deal with one of the cartridge recharging places to do it for under $20. You still need to get the right toner. Jack ------------
