Gep ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 2 Sat May 11, 1991 GSCOTT-MOORE at 11:13 EDT \\\--- D.Gep: Aw, c'mon! Give us a little more to work with than that! What do you need the program to do? Obviously a lot of software packages can do a lot of things that are "somehow" related to costume rental or party supplies. If you are just looking for database stuff you could get dbMan or Superbase Pro to handle anything you want. Of course you'd have to write the actual software. But I think you'd have to do a lot of set-up for any kind of retail-oriented software. Setting up inventory and price-per-unti and all that stuff. I don't think anybody makes a "Costume Rental Deluxe" program or "ST Party Supplies." \\\--- Gerry ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 3 Sat May 11, 1991 R.GRANT11 [Ron @ GXRSYS] at 13:24 EDT No, but someone DOES make a "Video/Rental Pro" program. Hi-Tech Advisers in Florida uses compiled dBMAN to create this program, which I understand to be originally designed for Video stores, but easily pertinent to most any rental situation. The program supports Rentals, Sales, Returns and Late Charges, Reservations and Proposals, Inventory lists, Product labels, 3 Sales Taxes, Detailed Customer History, Accounts Receivables, Credit limits, Hot or Slow Mover Reports, even an Employee Time Clock. It has optional add-on modules for Mail- Merge, A/R, G/L, Cash drawer, and Bar-Coding. Versions start at $299, all the way to $499 for the full-blown package. They have demos available. We use it ourselves, and may release it after some polishing within a few months. Rob.... ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 9 Sun May 12, 1991 G.GECZY1 [George @ JMG] at 22:21 EDT Thank you Rob... Yes, the demo is being finished off virtually as I write this... the only delay left is not with the demoes themselves, but making sure the "demo-runner" program is capable of handling future demo apps that we upload (ie so the "demo-runner" only has to be downloaded once). Keep your eyes open. Regarding Hyper-POS, if you think about it, there are nice (and easy to add) possibilities. Let's say you're ringing through an invoice; first, you can easily access (ie "link-to") the product info from the database, and then link to other related data bases (ie ordering, etc); then you could also link to a text description (or other information about the product), even a picture of it. Then the same with the customer - link to a picture for ID (ie a video store for rental security), a text file, etc. Very versatile. -- George @ JMG ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 10 Wed May 15, 1991 C.MONTGOMERY at 19:12 EDT Thanks for your help. Gord ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 13 Sat Aug 24, 1991 STEVE-B at 12:51 EDT Skip & Gord, Hmmmmm, I wrote a program to keep track of books. I wrote it in dBMAN. It was included in a program I marketed called Multi-Pak. There may even still be a demo of that program hanging around the libraries somwhere(do a search on Multi-Pak). I sold all of 10 copies of MP. Anyway, I could probably be convinced to release "The Librarian" (that's what I called it before I put it in "Multi-Pak") as a stand alone program as shareware. I'm sure the code could use some re-working. C'mon, convince me it's worth my while to do this ;). Is there anyone else besides Skip & Gord that would be interested?? Will you accept the gift of time? ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 15 Sun Aug 25, 1991 STEVE-B at 15:28 EDT OK, I made "The Librarian" a stand alone program again. It will probably need a little debugging and I'm sure you guys will come up with things you want me to add or change. What I will do is send everyone who wants one a disk with all the files that are needed to run this thing. The dBMAN run-time program alone is 300,000 bytes and I don't really want to pay the long distance fees to upload it. If one of you has a local node it would be great if you could U/L it for me. Actually, what we really need is to have the dBMAN run-time program uploaded as a separate file. Then people like myself can U/L just the program and support files for our own programs and tell people they need to also download file #"whatever" in order to run the program. This would mean a user would only have to download the run-time once no matter how many different dBMAN programs he/she found that he/she wanted to try. Also, updates/upgrades would only need to be the actual program file, instead of having to include the run-time with each upload. Finally, this is all extremely off topic and I think a Sysop needs to find/create an appropriate cat/topic where we can continue this further. Oh yeah, gift of time is just peachy. :] Later, __Steve B.__ - Member IAAD - Serving the Atari Community - ------------ Category 6, Topic 11 Message 16 Mon Aug 26, 1991 G.JOHANSEN2 [GORD] at 23:12 EDT Steve, I'd definately be interested but like you say, is it worth the effort for you. do you remember if it had options for things like the old Ace Doubles with two titles and authors? Or even an anthology option that would let you list all the stories and authors in a book so you could include them in a search by author and get a list of everything you had by an author and where it was located. I'd certainly be interested in helping test such a project and making suggestions for a wish list. For example in one entry for a business trip you would add (without the quotes) "[MILES=23.2 HOURS=5.3 EXPENSES=$44.50]" for each trip you take. Then choose the "Sum Numeric Fields" under the "Extras" menu bar - plug in the name of the item you wanted summed, expenses for instance, and hit "calculate" (This is covered on page 29 of the manual, to see what I'm trying to explain). It is now at version 4.0, however you may perfer to use version 3.0. Version 3.0 was published as a disk of the month in STart magazine and it is a lot faster than version 4.0. He didn't have a list of gods, just a knowledge of some stories about a few of them (Mercury, Mars, the biggies). We hit upon an ad for a financial product called "Janus" and my husband said that sounded like a god, so we looked it up, and sure enough, good old Janus is the Roman god of doorways (and, boy, do doorways _need_ a god). Voila! My son's homework was done...But I got to thinking, suppose there were a "Find" feature in our dictionary and I could have typed in "god,Roman" and found a bunch of 'em, how much easier our search for advertisements might have been... Of course, it would be even easier if teachers didn't assign stupid stuff like this, but in lieu of that, an online dictionary would be terrific! Also, it is my understanding that there's a good degree of compatibility between IBM and ST dbMan applications...Your choice of programmer needn't be limited to the ST world. Hi-Tech, in fact, has generated their various ST&IBM dbMan applications for general use by writing custom versions for specific contractors. Have you asked them for their customizing fees? Well worth the try, I'd say...Any inventory program written in dbMan would look a *lot* like Inventory Pro, by the way, because that's exactly what it is: an inventory program written in dbMan. If it's that far from what you want, maybe a dbMan application isn't the best choice for you. On the other hand, if it's not too far from what you have in mind, Hi-Tech might be able to offer you a very reasonable deal on a customized version. I'm interested in how this turns out for you. It's called Church Manager and it's from HiTech Advisors in FL. Don't have their address handy, but they are on GEnie. The program (at least the version I've seen) is _not_ menu-driven (GEM). It's a dbMan application and has that IBM look and feel. But it's fairly straight-forward. You press a letter (shown on a menu on the screen) to call up a certain segment of the database. HiTech's Church Manager is available in IBM and ST versions; if this kind of cross-compatibility could come in handy, you ought to investigate it. Or something equally helpful! Jeff, Puerto Rico is and is not a part of the USA. It is a strange legality, a commonwealth OF the United States but it is not IN the USA. I have had that distinction pounded into me here. The US Constitution does not even completely apply here. Puerto Rico has it's own constitution. It is an interesting relationship, one which is continually debated here, and the partisans for statehood vs. commonwealth vs. independence are very vocal! We have had an interesting two years here. but this is NOT the USA. Puerto Ricans have American citizenship (and are proud of it) but call themselves Puerto Ricans. "Us" they call "Americans. As to where we are moving, we still don't know. We will leave here at the latest on August 3rd, but where we go depends upon whether my husband gets a job offer before then. This is NOT a good time to be looking for a job, especially when one is this far away in Puerto Rico, but my husband is retiring from the Army after 24 years this summer and it has to be. He has a lot of job applications out, so maybe something will come through before the end of July. If not, we own a paid-for house in Manhattan, Kansas and will go back there and see what we can cook up. As to the photography database, thanks for the suggestions. With Text Scale it will squees 66 lines in the same space (It can't print the very top or bottom). The same problem occures with the Epsem emulator, with the same solution. I couldn't get the DJ to line up each check perfectly each time. The checks are about 2/3 the length of a n 8.5 x 11 page. I played ab round with the size of the check for quite a while until I got it's s length just right with the DJ. It now works perfectly with the DJ w/o using my Epson carte ridgeb at all. When I make a sale I might list the item number and the customer number and the computer can look up the correct name and address as well as the description and price of the item sold.
