I have a Mega STe w/TOS 2.06 and a 1.44 meg internal floppy. I have a Master 3S external floppy that I just installed a TEAC model FD-235HF 1.44 meg floppy in. The mechanism works fine. My internal drive will format any floppy to 1.44 meg including 720k disks but the TEAC won't. Does anyone here know how to dissable the HD sensor in the TEAC mechanism? Thanks Jack ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 2 Mon Nov 29, 1993 AEO.7 [Gregg] at 21:06 EST Jack, congrats... you're testing something I was wondering about for a long time. installing a HD mechanism in an external drive and testing it for workability. Does it format/read/write 1.44 disks ok? As for disabling the HD sensor... Short of taking the thing apart and breaking the sensor off so that it thinks ALL floppies are HD I've little idea. In any event I'd suggest against doing it. By the time you're working with 1.44 meg systems you're really pushing the media to the max. Using non-1.44 floppies as 1.44 is risking your data.... a LOT more than going from 360 to 720k did. Gregg ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 3 Mon Nov 29, 1993 D.MCNAMEE [Dan @ Atari] at 21:10 EST Ron, I think the code position is independant. If it weren't then you wouldn't be able to use the new ROMS (with the new desktop) in an STe, which I know you can do. Lee B., The video is the same, but you are right about the other stuff, and with the older ROMs they wont have access to any of those other things (extra serial, 16Mhz, etc.) Dan ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 4 Mon Nov 29, 1993 C.HENDERSON2 [Chuck] at 22:41 EST Gregg, I tried installing an Epson HD drive mechanisn in an old ATARI SF354 case. Had to lengthen the power leads and put in a new ribbon cable, but the thing works GREAT! Reads, writes, formats and all. My MSTE has TOS 2.05 and I use FDC Cookie in the auto folder, and it does the trick. My MegaSTe has the 1.4 upgrade but the external SF314 is still 720K. I'd like to upgrade it, one way or another, to 1.44 since you've proven it works and works well. Now to start looking for a defunct drive (dead mechanism but good electronics) to upgrade. Then sell my current (old style) 720K external drive to reduce the cost of the upgrade. (Don't know what it would do with 2 floppy drives.) I believe that tos 2.06/3.06 or 4.xx is required to install the cookie. (My MSTe with tos 2.05 doesn't have it.) The "_FDC" cookie value is defined as: High byte = density 0 = 360k/720k 1 = 1.44 meg 2 = 2.88 meg Lower 3 bytes indicate origin of unit. "ATC" = Atari. Hope that helps a little. Apparently, there is a known problem with some MSTes. Several people have claimed that there was a bug in the DMA/SHIFTER chip. According to Lars-Erik Osterud: " Right edge of mono screen 'flips' over to left edge when changing screen address/resolution in mono-mode. We tried to find a chip that could be the cause of all these problems ... It's chip U502 on my MSTE and is called GSTSHIFTER on the print-layout. After looking at the print-layout on both MSTE and standard STE we found the same chip on standard STE, a combined sound/video chip but with a totally different part-number. Anyway, we removed the original Mega STE chip (made in 1990) and replaced it with the STE chip (from 1989) and all the problems were gone. If you want to "steal" a chip from a standard STE it's chip U401 inside the STE (still GSTSHIFTER)." Is this correct. Each hard drive manufacturer locates the connectors in different places, so it all depends on which hard drive mechanism you have. Some are on the front, some on the bottom, and some on the side. The 3 DIP switches have nothing to do with your hard drive installation. Leave them alone! The hard drive kit is a simple plug and play installation. It can only go in one way; as long as you don't miss any pins on the plug, or don't install the ribbon cable backwards (pin 1 is marked with the color stripe), its pretty much idiot proof. ;-] Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) p.s. John G., Greetings! I seem to remember I had trouble with the ST Virus Killer 3.84 on the MSTE. The Virus Guard seems to not be compatible with TOS 2.06 (you don't mention what TOS you have) or the 1.44 MB floppies or something. I had to get rid of the Virus Guard on all my disks as it hopelessly munged the system during boot. I tried writing to George Woodside, but he appears to have disappeared off GEnie. Probably left the Atari community as well. Also when you say the Albertt is incompatible with any games, can you disable it with software or do you have to move your monitor connection back to the original monitor or what ? I really like my flight simulators it's a shame that FALCON (F16 sim) doesn't work with newer TOS's. I guess I'll have to buy DOGFIGHT to show that there is a market for such things... Dan Bryant, To add icons to your desktop you send CODEHEAD $10 for their TOS Extension Card diskette. It includes a program called ICON Juggler. Oh wait, I think it was made available in the GEnie file areas somewhere. Send for the CODEHEAD disk anyway as it includes several other utilities and our developers need and deserve all the support they can get! Al ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 69 Thu Dec 16, 1993 ARCHIVIST [Charlie] at 14:00 EST Dan, yes, there are now 15 file archives of this topic. They probably cover the time all the way back to when the MSTE was first announced. The easist way to find them all would be to use Aladdin's search for file command. It's one of the option under the terminal menu. Alternitively, it doesn't take long to find them all. I just did it by seting the library (option 8 on the library menu) to #13, and searching (command 3) on the keyword MEGSTE. I tried on MSTE as well but nothing came up. All the files seem to be named MEGSTE1.ARC to MEGSTE15.ARC. And, lastly, you don't need a file number to download if you know the file name. If you try to download manually (command 6) when prompted for the file just type the name. As I said, they're all named MEGSTExx.ARC with the xx being the number of the archive. You could get them all this way as well. Plug your monitor into the middle, the computer to one side and the card to the other. Then add a program like Deskmanager (right here on GEnie) and you can select everything with unplugging and renaming Auto programs. For Instance I set mine to come up if I hit the ESC key when the computer boots. That way it always boots up to whatever I was using last. You can also do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and hit ESC to change to a different mode. Basically Deskmanager just lets you choose what Auto Programs and ACC's you wish to run. Then you can save them all under one name like NORMAL or ALBERTT. It then takes care of renaming everything. I have an old Mega4st (Tos 1.04) in my office which can do anything and a MegaSTE at home where I loose things like the simms and a few other games as well. Anyway, the point of my discourse is that I followed the Spectyrum Holobyte roundtable for some time and there was always an active discussion around the incompatibility with the MSTE. They reckon the Mega STE version will be available sometime in March 1994. So keep your fingers crossed and hope they get it right. I can't remember clearly but if you put a 1.44m floppy in a superdrive it _really_ wants to format it as 1.44M. It's one of those little facist things about the Mac OS. And since I have the "800k" drives it's a hassle. The Codeheads said I can format correct DOS disks with Maxifile but I haven't tried it yet. At first the Mac wouldn't believe they were formatted so I just used the Mac. ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 126 Sat Dec 25, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 16:20 EST Kenne, I suppose the point should be made that TOS 2.06 manages memory and disk I/O better (much better, in fact) than previous versions of TOS. What all of us would really like to see is some sort of virtual memory manager for STs. I know there is one for the TT, although I don't know how well it works, but one for the ST woould be great. (A VM manager lets you use hard- disk space as slow memory.) Al ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 127 Sat Dec 25, 1993 CODEHEAD [Charles] at 18:53 EST Al, You can't really do virtual memory on an ST, with a 68000 chip. Virtual memory requires a programmable MMU, which the 68000 lacks. It might be remotely possible to kludge something up that catches address error exceptions and remaps them, but the performance would almost certainly be unacceptable since every RAM access of an "out of range" address would generate an exception. - Charles @ CodeHead Tech ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 128 Sat Dec 25, 1993 M.RIVMAN1 [MATT] at 21:12 EST Charles, If a VM APP _could_ be implemented for the ST line, it would probably be awfully slow, anyway. I know Calamus allows a type of VM option which will allow someone with 'somewhat' RAM limited machine to create files much larger than they would normally be able to. It creates folders on free HD space, and off-loads modules and (I think) frames when not in use, freeing up availabel RAM. It works well, but even on my MSTe it slows things down quite a bit. It would be nice to have, but hey, I'd rather see a highly successful Atari Corp. introduce and support a new and improved butt- kicker altogether! Well, I can dream, can't I ??? At present, it reads, "Information on the new Mega STE that Atari is introducing at the Fall '90 Comdex Show." Single density drives will only have a vertical pin on one side to align with the write protect opening in the diskette. You mentioned that you already have TOS2.06 installed so you're well on your way towards being able to use a 1.44mb floppy. You will also need an AJAX drive controller chip (a service center can check to see if your system contains the AJAX or the earler WD1772). Matt ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 184 Sun Jan 09, 1994 L.MCCLURE at 05:21 EST Many thanks to all for answering my questions. Unfortunately, it seems once again I have failed to acquire a Mega STe. The person I wanted to purchase it from acknowledged my follow-up e-mail and stated that he had either not recieved or had missed my original e-mail. In any case, "my" machine was sold a few days ago. It seems either my timing is off, or I do not have the funds, each time. ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 185 Sun Jan 09, 1994 G.NELSON16 [GFN] at 13:36 EST The question I still have though is about the jumper which is placed on the back right corner of the FPU socket. What does it do, and should I be concerned about it.? Why will the 68882 not work in the MSTe ? Sheldon, would you exchange a 68881 16mhz for my 68882 16mhz? ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 186 Sun Jan 09, 1994 S.WINICK at 18:10 EST GFN, >> Sheldon, would you exchange a 68881 16mhz for my 68882 16mhz? Why don't you ask that question to the dealer you purchased the 68882 from? Best I can do would be sell you a 68881. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 14, Topic 14 Message 187 Tue Jan 11, 1994 REALM [Joey] at 03:43 EST GFN, If your lucky you can probably find a Mega STE owner who just bought a Falcon and swap them a 68881 for a 68882. If your not so lucky you can probably sell a Falcon owner a 68882 and then buy a 68881 from Sheldon. Either way your still fairly lucky.:-) ------------
