Does anybody know how to do it? And, who are the brave souls that want to write the software drivers for it? 207 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 1 Sun Jan 30, 1994 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 22:46 EST Roger (or anyone), I am using MetaDOS 2.0 with the CDARGEN.BOS, HSMAY86.DOS, and ISO9660F.DOS in the BOOT directory of the AUTO folder. The CONFIG.SYS has the following three lines plus various comments: *BOS, C:\AUTO\BOOT\CDARGEN.BOS, Y:2 *DOS, C:\AUTO\BOOT\HSMAY86.DOS, Q:Y *DOS, C:\AUTO\BOOT\ISO9660F.DOS, R:Y It has been a few months, but the drive did work fine when hooked up to a Mac at work. One thing I was wondering, there was a connector block across a pair of pins in the back marked parity. I remember some discussion about parity on hard drives awhile back, so I removed it just to see what happened. After this the drive seemed to respond a bit more to the audio player programs, but still did not work completely. Those programs were CDPLAYER.PRG and AUD_CD20.ACC. It just occurred to me that the cable I just bought to try this out may be bad. I tried to check the pins with an ohm meter and found a number of pins not connected. Looking in the my Falcon book I see this may be okay, except that some of the pins that show something on them in the Falcon book are not connected in my cable. Does anyone know which pins are critical? Most that are not connected are labeled GND in the book, but at least one is +5V. Should I try another cable? Also wondering if the CD-ROM drive sends some info to the computer when a disk is inserted or if the drive itself just checks the type of disk it is and then only responds to the appropriate commands. In other words, how it knows when there is an audio disk versus an ISO9660 format disk versus some other format. Other than audio, I just have one CD data disk and I'm not sure what format it is. Thanks for all the help guys and hopefully I can get this figured out eventually. RandyH ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 2 Tue Feb 01, 1994 L.CHANDLER [LINDA] at 02:00 EST Three cheers on the CD Rom RTC. The transcript was great and very informative. Does anyone know if there is a CDRom disk of symbols and fonts for Cadd programs. Now that would be useful. Linda. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 3 Tue Feb 01, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 18:36 EST Mayer, The ExtenDOS CD-ROM driver doesn't need MiNT, but will even work with it as I've used it under MultiTOS. I don't have Geneva, but I don't know any reason why it wouldn't work. I've had it installed for a while now. Hopefully in a future issue of ST Informer you'll see an article on some of the clipart, etc. CD-ROMs that Steve Deitz and I have used with our STs and CD-ROMs. Randy, Unfortunately not all SCSI drives seem to use _exactly_ the same command set. You may be able to work out something with Roger so that you could return the software (destroying all copies!) if it didn't work with your drive. There are a lot of different CD-ROM drives out there and I know Roger wasn't able to test ExtenDOS with very many of them. He has been most helpful and will try to support whatever you've got. Take Care, Lee B. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 4 Wed Feb 02, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 00:14 EST RandyH, Some thoughts: 1. Are you sure your CD-ROM is High Sierra or ISO 9660 ? You mentioned testingthe drive on a Mac at work: Macs use HPFS file systems which _cannot_ be recognised by MetaDOS (or ExtenDOS for that matter). 2. When you try to read the disk is when you discover it's audio or CDROM. If you try to play a CDROM (on a CDROM drive), you should just get some kind of error which a player program may or may not report. LINDA, Don't know if there's anything specifically for CADD ... there are many font disks about. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 5 Sun Feb 06, 1994 R.BURROWS1 [Roger@Anodyn] at 23:16 EST The latest release of ExtenDOS, version 1.1, is now available from: Anodyne Software 6 Cobbler Court Ottawa Ontario K1V 0B8 Canada. FALCON030 support ExtenDOS now supports the Falcon030 in addition to the ST, STe, Mega, and TT030. I've also had the opportunity to test ExtenDOS on the NEC 74 drive (external version of the NEC 84), and am happy to say it works without problems. The list of drives that ExtenDOS is known to work with is: Atari CDAR-504 Panasonic (Matsushita) CR-501 NEC 74/84 Sony CDU-541 Toshiba 3401 It is also expected to work with any SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 compatible drive. MultiTOS experience Although ExtenDOS is not designed to run under MultiTOS, it will in fact run, as long as memory protection is turned off. At this time, the only drawback to running ExtenDOS under MultiTOS is that it is impossible to run programs directly from a CD-ROM. If you need that facility, you'll have to run ExtenDOS without MultiTOS, or MultiTOS with the XFS driver (or wait until I figure out how to fix it!). Performance I've been doing some timing comparisons in the different environments, and I'll be posting the results to a library file. All timings to date show TOS+ExtenDOS to be 2 to 3 times faster than MultiTOS+XFS driver. Some tests of ExtenDOS under MultiTOS seem to indicate that a lot of the performance difference is due to the XFS driver, rather than MultiTOS, although I haven't done extensive testing, and the way MultiTOS is set up can obviously affect performance. ExtenDOS vs MetaDOS Finally, if you have MetaDOS running and you're wondering if there is any reason to switch to ExtenDOS, the new Walnut Creek Atari CD-ROM provides a very good reason: the capability of running programs directly from CD-ROM. As mentioned above, this is fully supported by ExtenDOS; there are several problems with the MetaDOS implementation. Roger Burrows, Anodyne Software P.S. ExtenDOS is still only $19.95 _including_ shipping & handling (US$ for US delivery, Cdn$ for Canadian delivery, Ontario residents please add 8% PST). ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 6 Mon Feb 07, 1994 J.DINGA [Jolly Jon] at 01:56 EST Roger, not to be picky, but to clarify, is that the Tosiba 3401b you have tested? There is a Sony CD-ROM advertized at 99.00 (75.00 U.S.) the model number is CDU-31-A, it says it is CD-photo compatible. Is this worth picking up? In other words, will it work with EXtendos. ? Nathan ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 18 Sat Feb 12, 1994 M.EASTER [Mike] at 14:31 EST (Alert: 3 screenful post) The Encyclopedia Britannica (EB) is going on-line electronically. In an article by John Markoff of the New York Times News Service published in the San Diego Union-Tribune 940208 was cited the intention to provide distribution via Internet. Currently, the database and its software interface are being tested at San Diego State University (SDSU). Beginning in the fall, the base will be available to universities by a variety of information retrieval methods developed by Internet researchers and undergoing commercialization. Later, the data base will be available to a larger commercial audience, after the academic distribution provides testing for the electronic version. The electronic EB, Britannica Online, being tested at SDSU uses "hypertext" links between the four components of EB via Mosaic software, developed by WAIS Inc. (Menlo Park, CA) via networked personal computers and workstations. This software was developed at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications at the Univ. of Illinois (Chapaign-Urbana). The interface displays documents and illustrations, highlights words and phrases with links to other docs by clicking on a highlighted block of text or illustration. EB execs plan pricing the base to universities as subscription based on student population. Pricing of general commercial distribution is still being discussed but might be done reference by reference; enabled by the WAIS and Mosaic software. Economics were the basis for EB publishing themselves rather than allying with an existing online, said EB exec Joseph Esposito, "..can't make any money licensing your content." "..many of the content providers have put themselves in a position where they're held hostage to the on-line services." At 225 years, EB is the oldest continuously published encyclopedia in the English language, and the largest revenue, $550 million. Currently the 32 volume reference contains 44 million words and 25,000 illustrations (online: 300 million characters, 2000 illus.) Its four components are the Index, the Pro-, Micro-, and Macro- pedias. The hypertext links are only in the online version. End info from the article. Sysops: those are my words above. Shouldn't be a copyright problem. The EB exec quotes were clipped as indicated. EB is too large a database for current CDROM (this msg may get moved). The article makes no mention of media requirements, compression tech, specific platform for the software or other important info. I've been trying to find out something about WAIS and Mosaic, and downloaded a recent 931201 EJournal article from the DigiPub library covering digital publishing hypertext authoring and retrieval software over multiple platforms, DOS w/ & w/o Windows, Mac, Sun, etc. but no mention of Mosaic or WAIS. Anybody know anything about this development? I may leave a post somewhere to see if any SDSU student or faculty have anything to say from experience. It's also probably single-session only, although that may not be as big a concern. If it _is_ SCSI, it should definitely work with ExtenDOS! Albert, That thought had occurred to me ... but you didn't hear a commitment (yet!). The reason given is that it would cut into their print version profits. Consider the Oxford English Dictionary sells for $2700 in print form and only $900 on CD-ROM. If they only have higher education using it via internet they can have better control of their product. Thanks for posting the EB information, its very interesting. Roger, There is C source code out on internet that does provide audio over scsi for the Toshiba 3401. It currently only works with SGI Unix boxes. I read this in the C Users Journal several months ago. Also Merridian Data also has a similar utility in house. -- Albert ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 23 Sun Feb 13, 1994 M.EASTER [Mike] at 13:40 EST Albert - re EB never on CD This is the last msg I'll stick in this topic about EB and Mosaic, since the developments are of a digital publishing nature but don't currenty involve CDROM _or_ Atari SCSI. That's not topic "drift", it's topic abandonment :-) I spotted a msg in the DigiPub BB that said that Mosaic was an Internet "browser" and runs on Mac, Windows, and Unix/ X-Windows. Apparently it was featured on a recent Computer Chronicles and had a write-up in the Jan '94 _Wired_, a publication I don't know. I am getting curious about how big data bases are handled especially involving hypertext; I guess I'll roam around and see what I can find. Thanks..........Jon ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 28 Mon Feb 14, 1994 M.EASTER [Mike] at 09:43 EST This one _really is_ the last post off-topic :-) For those wishing to pursue exploration of the role of Mosaic, the EB server: WAIS is not just the name of Mosaic's company, but an Internet protocol for wais client servers, such as Mosaic. More about the role of wais can be found in its topic in the Internet BB, 1405;1, cat 23 top 3. Mosaic is an exotic "gopher" and more (apparently a hypertext authoring environment also). The Internet gurus over there are not only very knowledgeable, but also have superb communication skills, ie are great at "splaining" things; amazing, considering the arcane world of the technology of the Internet. Some of these explorations may bring me back on-topic if I find out more about MicroSoft's front end for their BookShelf CDROM (from an IBM RT, not the Internet one.) Actually, it is the "backend", the database itself (and others), in which I'm interested. My interest in CDROM for Atari is as a source of reference material, good, solid, text-based stuff, not puffed up multimedia junk. Didja notice EB reduced their illustrations from 25,000 to 2,000 for the online? Very sensible. I thought that it might be of general interest. ExtenDOS v1.0 has a problem with accessing one of the directories on the Walnut Creek GEMini disk (\FILES\GRAPHICS\IMG). After I bought the disk, I discovered the problem is that the directory itself contains junk which causes the problem. However, I also discovered it was possible to add some additional checking to the ISO9660 driver to permanently circumvent this and similar problems that might occur on other CD-ROMs. The fix has already been incorporated in ExtenDOS v1.1; I will also be making it available shortly via a patch file on GEnie. Although it's really a bug in the CD-ROM rather than ExtenDOS, it's a lot easier to fix ExtenDOS! Now might also be a good time to talk about upgrade policies. I will be distributing patch files at no charge to fix any significant bugs. I will be charging a small amount for upgrades to new releases that provide additional function (like Falcon030 support in v1.1). Specifically, to upgrade v1.0 to v1.1, please send your master diskette plus $7 (incl shipping) to: Anodyne Software 6 Cobbler Court Ottawa Ontario K1V 0B8 Canada. As before, send US$ for shipping to the US, Cdn$ for shipping within Canada, Ontario residents please add 8% PST. Please note: the major difference between 1.0 & 1.1 is Falcon support. If you don't need that, you don't need 1.1! ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 52 Sat Feb 19, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 06:21 EST Roger, That's great news! I really wanted access to the \FILES\GRAPHICS\IMG directory. Since I don't need the Falcon support (yet ) I'm really looking forward to that patch file. Thanks for the "extra" effort to correct a problem that really didn't even belong to you. This shows again why it's so worthwile to stay in the Atari community! We have some of the best developers anywhere. Take Care, Lee B. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 54 Mon Feb 21, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 07:35 EST Wow. Thanks, Greg. (A good reader would also be LookIt.) Al ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 55 Mon Feb 21, 1994 C.LABELLE [Tintin] at 21:24 EST I would like to announce that the NEC 3xp works perfectly with ExtenDOS v. 1.1, out-of-the-box. I bought a NEC 3xp last week (triple-speed, $645 canadian) in Ottawa and spent many hours using it . It's connected to my Falcon and is ultra-performant both without or with MultiTOS. ExtenDOS doesn't need MultiTOS, but is fully compatible with it. Those with the XFS driver will appreciate the versatility of ExtenDOS. Roger Burrows also offers great support, not like Atari and their XFS which support a drive or two. To use the NEC 3xp you need a SCSI-2 to SCSI-2 cable, available at most stores nowadays. Tintin ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 56 Tue Feb 22, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 06:07 EST Tintin, Thanks for that report on the NEC 3xp & ExtenDOS. I'm sure Roger will be pleased. Take Care, Lee B. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 57 Sun Feb 27, 1994 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 18:50 EST A short time ago I was asking a bunch of questions about hooking up an Apple CD-ROM drive to my MegaST. I had tried MetaDOS and the XFS driver, but couldn't get it to work. I decided to take a chance and ordered ExtenDOS. It came in the mail yesterday and I am happy to report that it works! Inside the Apple casing is a Sony CDU-541, btw. Initially I thought there was a problem because when I double clicked the drive icon I would get a message that data on the disk was corrupted or damaged. But after selecting okay from that alert, the directory showed up in the window just fine. Everytime I tried to open a folder I would get this same alert, but then the folder would open and all the files would be there. After a bit of digging, I found an option in Neodesk/Set Preferences/More... to 'check for executable bootsector'. After turning this option off, the alerts went away and the CD-ROM worked fine from the desktop. Then I found another problem with Geneva. No files would show up in the Geneva file selector for the CD-ROM drive. Also, when trying to run programs from the CD, many would fail reporting they could not find the resource or inf or whatever file. Same thing would work fine without Geneva. Anybody else seen this and have any idea what the problem is? Is there a bug in one of these applications or do I have something set up wrong? Any suggestions appreciated. Anyway, I am now about to embark into the world of CD-ROM on the Atari and I would like to thank Roger for his efforts in making it possible. RandyH ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 58 Mon Feb 28, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 03:27 EST Randy, Thanks for the report on problems with the CD-ROM drive and ExtenDOS under Geneva. My drive hasn't arrived yet, so I'll just guess a bit. Do you have the PATH statement in GEM.CNF written so that a bare comma is at the beginning? That tells the app to look in its own directory for a RSC file before looking elsewhere. Al ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 59 Mon Feb 28, 1994 S.DEITZ at 19:07 EST Randy, Just today I received my ExtenDOS and found the same symptoms under NeoDesk and Geneva. Thanx for that "executable boot sector" tip, it worked great. When the Geneva file selector comes up, try switching the display from 1 column to 2 columns and the files will show. I've only had a few minutes of play-time so I haven't tried running anthing directly from the CD. My intital reaction is very positive as I've been using the XFS drivers for some time. I'll report back here with anything else I learn. Roger, thanx for a great product! ----STEVE---- ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 60 Tue Mar 01, 1994 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 22:33 EST Al, I check the GEM.CNF and yes the PATH statement has a bare comma. Following that is a period and another comma. Not sure what this is for. Anyway, if this was the problem, wouldn't also be so for the hard drive? Steve, I tried the 2 column option from Geneva file selector and yes the files show up in the root directory (sometimes?), but I can not open any folders to get past the root dir. And this still does not help with running programs off the CD. Guess I should send mail to Roger. Thanks guys, RandyH ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 61 Wed Mar 02, 1994 S.DEITZ at 05:34 EST Randy, Sorry I *still* haven't had a lot of time to experiment, but I don't Think I had trouble opening directories under the Geneva selector. Not sure why the CD-ROM problem is showing up. Al ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 63 Wed Mar 02, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 18:28 EST RandyH, Are you using the UNIDRIVE.DOS or UNI_BDDS.DOS ? You may need to use the latter when accessing this particular CD-ROM disk. (I've forgotten the specifics of the symptoms that you're having, so I may be off-base here.) I hope this helps. Take Care, Lee B. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 64 Wed Mar 02, 1994 S.DEITZ at 20:36 EST RandyH, Ouch. I tried using the Geneva file selector and also found that I couldn't open any folders. The TOS programs I've been using (on my Falcon without GNVA_TOS) have worked fine though. I also ran a few more APPs off the GEMini CD and none seemed to exhibit problems finding their correct RSC files etc. I'm bumming over this file selector thing though. Is it possible to bypass the Geneva selector? I hate to cross topics like this, but perhaps some questions in the Geneva cat. are in order. ----STEVE---- ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 65 Wed Mar 02, 1994 S.DEITZ at 21:50 EST Randy, Hi, me again . I never made it to the Gribnif Cat but just tried running Little Green Selector from the desktop. It replaced the G selector and allowed access to all the folders on my CD. Al ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 67 Thu Mar 03, 1994 S.FARWIG [STAN] at 23:12 EST I wanted to add my two cents of praise for ExtenDOS and for Anodyne Software. I was impressed in the first place by the care and professionalism shown in the packing and mailing. Out of the mail box, something about it, without opening, whispered: 'Hey! this is a company to watch.' For the price I was expecting a manual on disk, but no! there was a professionally done, good looking spiral bound manual. And it does a good job of leading one through the intricacies of CD_ROM configurating (with one caveat...no mention is made for users of ICD software that SCSI device numbers start from 8...at least in my version they do). And the program worked flawlessly. No more MultiTos! It's off the system. Thank you over and over. Now, what is Anodyne going to do for an encore? Stan ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 68 Fri Mar 04, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:34 EST Stan, SCSI device numbers actually don't start at 8; it's just that ICD was faced with the problem of two SCSI buses on one system, and so it's software remaps the second SCSI bus numbers to 8 and higher. Oddly, they rreally belong to the *FIRST* SCSI bus, the one in the computer, whereas the lower numbers belong to the bus that's plugged in via an ICD host adaptor. Didn't work at first, but what does other than the CodeHead stuff? So I read the manual, and read it again. After two hours of trying I was finally able to boot without error messages but still no access to the CD-ROM. Where have I gone wrong? I haven't done a topic update in a while, if there is an ExtenDOS topic then move this message because I want very specific help. Here is where I am at with my ExtenDOS.CNF: *BOS, M:\EXTENDOS\CD.BOS, P:10 *DOS, M:\EXTENDOS\UNIDRIVE.DOS, P=12, Q:P This is what seems to work without giving me any error messages. My CD-ROM is device ID 2 so I added 8 and got P:10. I also have a desk icon for a cd rom at Q so I did Q:P to see if that would help. Doesn't do any good. Even with icons for both P and Q when I try to open these for a file listing I get word there is no such device. On the boot, it looks good. By the manual this should work. What have I gone and done wrong? Oh, by the way, my test ROM is the GEmini and I am trying to access through a FALCON SCSI II hook up. I have drives at ID 0,1 and 3 is a syquest. Everything talks to my desktop except ID 2, the CD_ROM player. If I boot multitos then I can access the rom as Q or P depending on what I call the XFS driver. I know my system works, why doesn't it work with ExtenDOS? Oh, last bit of info. the player is a NEC 55 and during the ExtenDOS boot it seems to recognize it, at least I get a read out saying Device is NEC 55. Any help, advice, gladly accepted. Al ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 72 Sat Mar 05, 1994 L.W.BENJAMIN [Koloth] at 09:01 EST Grouch, First off I assume your CONFIG.SYS is composed of two lines and GEnie wrapped them into one for us. (to force GEnie to not wrap lines, put a space in front of them like I do with my signature line.) I haven't looked at the manual, but I looked at my (non-falcon) configuration. As you say all looks fine if the adding 8 to the SCSI address is correct. Where are you putting the CONFIG.SYS file ? I think the manual says to put it in the AUTO sub-directory, but I think I had to put it in the root directory of my boot drive. I wrote to Richard about this, but I don't think he hasn't specifically mentioned it in public. (This may be a problem inherited from MetaDOS) Hope this helps. I did put the config. file in the root. My problem is that although the boot appears to be ok, I can not open the drive directory from the desktop or from within any program, I just get the non-existant device message. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 74 Sat Mar 05, 1994 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 23:04 EST Grouch, Not sure what the problem is, but your EXTENDOS.CNF data looks a bit strange. Why did you use P as the physical drive instead of the Z that it comes configured with? Also seems you have an extra comma in your DOS line. It could be that on boot up the physical drive part works okay, but the logical drive at Q does not. Why do you have your EXTENDOS folder in drive M and could this be a problem? Here is what my EXTENDOS.CNF looks like (using a MegaST with CD-ROM at ID 3): *BOS, C:\EXTENDOS\CD.BOS T=0, Z:2 *DOS, C:\EXTENDOS\UNIDRIVE.DOS P=8 B=2 R/W, P:Z Not sure what else could be wrong. I was able to set it up in a few minutes without any hassle other than a few minor glitches with NeoDesk and Geneva. RandyH PS - I have found a couple other problems with EXTENDOS that I can't figure out. One is if I put EXTENDOS.PRG before WARP9.PRG in the AUTO folder, without Geneva I get two bombs on boot up after all the AUTO programs have run. With Geneva it works fine. Also works fine if EXTENDOS.PRG runs after WARP9.PRG. Anyone know where EXTENDOS.PRG should go in the AUTO folder order? Another problem is that with ExtenDOS active, Calamus won't load properly. Seems the path gets messed up and Calamus won't load it's config file or any modules or anything else. When I go to open a document, the path is set to C: and Calamus is on D:. I took your two lines loaded them into EDHACK, changed the C:\ to M:\, booted with the M Autofolder and although about 7 of my desktop icons disappeared (now there is a mystery for another night) I was into drive P with photo CD index. This is great! The reason for booting off M is that is a Syquest partition I keep my Calamus files on. I'm usually on the other end of the question-answer routine. I am curious, though, if you use Geneva and if you have any trouble with Calamus while ExtenDOS is active. I guess I need to start going through my AUTO programs one by one and narrow this problem down a bit more. Speaking of questions, yet another anomalie has shown up in my CD-ROM adventure. When I have the CD-ROM hooked up and turned on, I am unable to print from AtariWorks as spedo gives me an error saying it was unable to load the printer drive (there may not be enough memory or some such). If I turn the CD drive off, it works just fine. I think this happens with or without ExtenDOS. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this? ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 82 Sun Mar 06, 1994 S.DEITZ at 20:14 EST RandyH, I've been experiencing the same problem with PageStream not finding it's paths under Geneva w/ ExtenDOS. Oddly, they rreally belong to the *FIRST* SCSI bus, the one in the computer, whereas the lower numbers belong to the bus that's plugged in via an ICD host adaptor. Sigh. Confounded, confused and willing to admit again I'm an ignorant, ill- informed computer slob. Uninformed on buses (except the kind there aren't enough of where I live), I learned on getting my Falcon that my previous device numbers for my HDs, which were down in the numerical range recommended in the ExenDOS, no longer responded and that the IDE was scanned by HD software as device 16. Somewhere (ICD text?...I don't remember) I learned that if I counted my HDs starting with the number 8, everything was hoaky-doaky. So, interesting and odd as the remapping is, I think if the CD-ROM device number were left at 5 or thereabout, as the ExtenDOS manual recommends, difficulties might ensue...but I could be wrong and something I did stupid when I first had the Falcon caused the numerical malfunction. If I recall correctly, I did mention numero 8 in connection with ICD software, and so with ICD software SCSI devices sorta...kinda... actually (as in configuring situations) start at 8, just in a manner of speaking, from an external, mundane perspective, maybe? my best, Stan ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 85 Mon Mar 07, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 03:28 EST Grouch, TeraDesk (I sent up the latest version a day or two ago) works fine under Geneva, although you must understand that it will be single-tasking. It's extraordinarily easy to set up and use, so you have no reason to be afraid of it. But to have Geneva and not use it seems strange. It doesn't "mung up" anything that I know of. There are problem apps even with different TOS versions, as we all know too well. Geneva has, overall, fewer problems running applications than any other OS you could name. You will also want Geneva and Neo4 as a team, so it would make sense to learn them one at a time. Don't expect an answer for a while, it'll probably take a week for Geneva to arrive. As promised, I've uploaded a patch program (EDOS_001.LZH) to the library. This patches UNIDRIVE.DOS & UNI_BDDS.DOS (from version 1.0 of ExtenDOS) to fix the problem with the GEMini CD-ROM [the fix is already in version 1.1]. Also, while we're on the subject of problems :-(, I've discovered one in UNIDRIVE/UNI_BDDS: if the B= and/or P= parameters are omitted from the *DOS line in EXTENDOS.CNF, the driver may fail to load, giving a message 'device not responding'. Fortunately, this is easy to circumvent: just be sure to use both B= & P= parameters. Thanks to Ray at TOAD for pointing this out. I have developed a fix for this one too, but since the circumvention is easy, I'm waiting until I track down the Geneva problem before I release it. Unfortunately it's for DOS only. Here's Walnut Creek's description of it: The new CDROM of CDROMs (CoC) is an encyclopedia of CDROMs, software, hardware and the CDROM industry. CoC is an easy to use multimedia relational database that runs under Windows (tm) 3.1. CoC has SVGA color pictures of titles, screen shots, sound, motion, etc. It has information on the title, publisher, price addresses, etc. You also get many reviews to gain an in-depth knowledge of just what the title is about. CoC's intuitive search routine is a major strength of the disc. The search and retrieval routines are not only a joy to use, they are faster than just about anything on the market. CoC covers 4,067 different discs from Noth America alone. There are 500 reviews from more than 100 reviewers. There are over 4,695 company names with contact information, telephone and fax numbers. Serious, objective, expert end-user reviewers tell you straight out with no punches pulled what they think of the disc--how well it meets its goals-- whether it's worth buying or not. CoC supports full quality sound, animation and hi-resolution 256-color graphics. Many popular discs have 512x768 screen images in 256 color so the user can see actual screens for a better understanding of the disc. There are also many images of the retail box so you can easily recognize the disc when you got to the store to buy it. And CoC won't use any of your hard disc space! If you want to know more about the world of CDROM, you need this disc. $39.95 Now, Atarians, you may wonder why I detail this DOS-only disc. It's because it was created by a small company whose principle programmer is "our own" Damien M. Jones of DMJ Software (View II, Sound Lab, DMJ GIF 3, MemWatch, etc.) Congratulations to Damien & Co. We do *not* have an ICD host connected at all but are using ICD Pro utilities. Does this sound like a workable combination? I remember reading that an ADSCSI or equivalent was required with ExtenDOS. Ray said it mightwork since the Maxtor drive works fine on the Supra host. He also said we don't need an ICD host. One last note. Toad forgot to send the Gemeni CD so all we have for testing right now is a $7 sampler CD for IBM PC. I don't know if we can even get a directory since we haven't been able to access the drive. It is now one of the fastest viewers on any platform. In fact with some error checking and keyboard checks taken out we got times of 4.0 seconds. This is as fast as a dedicated hardware player can read an image. Actually a dedicated hardware player checks in at 3.8 seconds. We came up with a new way to read the CD and DMJ did some assembly language magic on the code. Nobody can optimize a bit of code better than DMJ. The CD audio player is about 90% done now. We have an animation player in the works that already is better than anything on any other platform. I can view a better animation on the Falcon than I can on a 486-50 PC. Of course both the CD audio and animation player can be used with Photo Show Pro scripts too. We also have a new application lined up that will sell to EVERY Falcon owner in the world. This one is a must have program. I was reading the "added features" list for View II's update. Hard to believe one program can do all that it will do. M.G. ------------ Category 4, Topic 19 Message 166 Thu Mar 24, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 12:50 EST M.G., The SyDOS CD-ROM drive works off the parallel port, as you know, which means it cannot work off the ST without a driver that is designed to operate through TOS and the ST's port. No one has ever done that for the ST, because it's dumb; the ST can readily use SCSI devices, whereas PCs have a dedvil of a time with them. even when adaptors are used. But I would not be surprised if your SyDOS drive is actually SCSI-ready internally, which would let you cable a SCSI connector to the drive for use via the Link or a standard ICD host adaptor. Since you already have a hard drive on the ST, you may already have a SCSI adaptor. Compressing the data on a CD and transferring it to a PC hard drive and then the ST hard drive would work fine if it is just data -- GIFs or texts and so on. But that's a lot of work. A Falcon will run SCSI without a host adaptor, an ST needs this intermediate step. If you have a hard drive already connected to your ST you can chain the Syquest and use the same host adaptor. If not, you will need to buy one. Check the ICD roundtable for the adASCSI host adaptor and software you will need, or check hardware for sale, you can often pick up a bargin there. What your Syquest should have built in is a hard disk controller, in the old days we needed to buy both a controller and a host adaptor along with the hard disk, which made them more expensive. These days all the HDs come with a controller and an autopark feature not to mention the fact that they are sellilng for around a dollar a meg. How times have changed! Anyway, I'm not sure you can use the CD-ROM drive you mention with the Atari as none of the Atari CD-ROM drivers use the printer port as the SCSI/ACSI is much faster. If the CD-ROM drive is a SCSI device you might be able to put it in the same case as the Syquest, but then you wouldn't have it available for the PC. The 3xe is larger and heavier than the 3xp, and is more expensive. The 3xp is caddy-less. The 3xp accepts a rechargeable battery (converts in a portable audio-CD player).
