Spelling Sentry can check spelling in various ways, as described in the following paragraphs. It can also expand abbreviations. Since Spelling Sentry is a desk accessory, it's instantly accessible from your favorite word processor, text editor, communications program, or DTP application. A key feature of Spelling Sentry is its ability to detect spelling errors in real time while you type using other programs, such as word processors. If you type a word containing a spelling error, Spelling Sentry sounds a tone and flashes the screen. Then, with a single mouse-click, you can select the correct spelling from one of the alternatives which Spelling Sentry suggests. Spelling Sentry will automatically replace the misspelled word with the correct one. Spelling Sentry can also check ASCII files and word-processor documents. Since Spelling Sentry runs as a desk accessory, you can save a file from a text editor or word processor, then invoke Spelling Sentry's check-file feature to look for spelling errors. Spelling Sentry can correct misspelled words in the file interactively. When it finds a misspelled word, Spelling Sentry presents a set of alternative spellings. You can select the correct spelling using the keyboard or mouse, and Spelling Sentry will correct the word in the file. Spelling Sentry can even correct subsequent occurrences of the misspelled word. A feature of interest to many Atari users is Spelling Sentry's ability to check the contents of the clipboard. The clipboard is a mechanism used to pass information between GEM programs and desk accessories. To use Spelling Sentry's check-clipboard feature, you copy a block of text into the clipboard from your word processor or text editor. Next, click on Spelling Sentry's "Check Clipboard" button. Again, Spelling Sentry presents a dialog showing alternative spellings when it detects a misspelled word. Select the correct spelling from the list of alternatives shown in the dialog. Spelling Sentry corrects the word in the clipboard -- and optionally further occurrences of the error -- automatically. You can then paste the corrected text in the clipboard back into your word processor or text editor. Many people can correctly spell most of the words they use, but still get stuck on the occasional word. With Spelling Sentry's check-word feature, you can check the spelling of a single word. Spelling Sentry will let you know if the word is spelled correctly. If not, it shows you a list of alternative spellings, from which you can pick the correct one. Besides being a spelling checker, Spelling Sentry can also expand abbreviations while you type. For example, when you type your initials, Spelling Sentry can replace them with your full name. You can teach Spelling Sentry abbreviations for words and phrases you use frequently, such as your return address, telephone number, "boilerplate" text in business correspondence, and BBS aliases and commands. Programmers can define abbreviations for language constructs and function calls. Spelling Sentry's abbreviation feature also works when you check disk files and the clipboard. Spelling Sentry can include parts of the date and time when it expands an abbreviation. The parts include: * The year, with or without the century * The month number (01 to 12) and name (January to December) * The day of the month (01 to 31) and of the week (Sunday to Saturday) * The hour in 12-hour (00 to 12) or 24-hour (00 to 23) form * The minute and second * "a.m." or "p.m." Using this feature, you can easily create abbreviations which include the current date and time in any format you prefer: Monday, May 11, 1992 05/11/92 10 o'clock p.m. 10:32 p.m. Creation date: 11-May-92 22:32:15 92/05/11 (Monday) Adding or changing abbreviations is easy with Spelling Sentry's GEM interface. Spelling Sentry uses a window-in-a-dialog approach, showing nine abbreviations at a time. You can scroll the window contents using a standard scroll bar. New abbreviations can be added by clicking on an "Add" button, and existing ones can be removed or changed by selecting them with the mouse. You can even open different abbreviation files, so you can have several sets of abbreviations for different purposes. For a spelling checker to be useful, it must have a large dictionary so it doesn't mistakenly report unknown words as misspelled. Spelling Sentry uses two dictionaries. The main dictionary contains over 100,000 words, including contractions, many proper names, and words spelled according to both American and British rules. The main dictionary is organized in segments that can be loaded from disk to memory as needed. This makes Spelling Sentry adaptable to the capabilities of your system. If your computer has a modest memory capacity, Spelling Sentry will keep most of its main dictionary on disk, loading segments as it needs them. If you have 380K of spare memory, Spelling Sentry will load the entire main dictionary into memory, either all at once or segment-by-segment, for maximum speed. The user dictionary holds words you use that aren't in the main dictionary. Such words may include your last name, street names, city name, business's name, and so on. The user dictionary is accessed very quickly, and never needs indexing or reformatting. Words in the user dictionary can be edited using the same window- in-a-dialog approach used for updating abbreviations. An important feature of any spelling checker is its ability to "guess" the correct spelling from a misspelled word. Spelling Sentry is outstanding in this area, matching the misspelled word against words in the dictionary using several sophisticated lexical rules. Spelling Sentry even orders its suggestions so the first word appearing in the list of suggestions is the one most likely to be the correct replacement. Spelling Sentry was designed to work on the entire line of Atari ST-compatible computers, from the 520ST with 512K of memory to the TT030 with 4Mb+. The only special requirement for Spelling Sentry is a double-sided disk drive. Spelling Sentry runs in a GEM window, so you can park it on the screen where it's out of the way yet still accessible. Spelling Sentry remembers its window position, so you don't have to position it manually each time you reboot. The 40-page illustrated user's guide that comes with Spelling Sentry was written with the user in mind. It contains patient, step-by-step instructions for installing, configuring, and using Spelling Sentry. In a departure from most user's manuals, which are organized by program functions such as menu entries or dialog boxes, the Spelling Sentry user's guide is organized by procedure. If you want to know how to add a new abbreviation, just read the instructions in the section called "How to add your own abbreviations." If you want to know how to check the contents of the GEM clipboard, see the "How to check the clipboard" section. Each section heading is listed in the table of contents for fast access. The Spelling Sentry package also includes an anagram solver and a word- guessing game based on "Hangman." The anagram solver determines which words can be derived from different arrangements of a string of letters, and is useful for solving jumble puzzles or anagrams. The anagram solver can also be used to create new anagrams. The hangman game sharpens your vocabulary as you try to guess the letters forming a word chosen at random from one of the 100,000 words in Spelling Sentry's dictionary. Spelling Sentry is developed and published by Wintertree Software Inc. Wintertree Software was incorporated in January 1992. Prior to then, it was Phil Comeau Software. Wintertree Software also publishes GramSlam, a grammar checker, and Grammar Expert, a grammar reference. Both GramSlam and Grammar Expert are software products for Atari ST computers. The addition of Spelling Sentry to its product line makes Wintertree Software Inc. the leading publisher of tools for writers in the Atari computer marketplace. Wintertree Software also publishes WStyle, a grammar checker for MS-DOS. Spelling Sentry's list price is $59.95 US. Spelling Sentry is available wherever Atari computer products are sold. It is also available directly from Wintertree Software Inc., at the address listed above. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 2 Sat Nov 28, 1992 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 13:54 EST ======================================================================= P R E S S R E L E A S E ======================================================================= For further information, contact: Wintertree Software Inc. 43 Rueter St. Nepean, Ontario Canada K2J 3Z9 (613) 825-6271 Wintertree Software is proud to announce the release of Spelling Sentry version 1.10 for Atari ST compatible computers. This new version incorporates many new features suggested by Spelling Sentry owners. Spelling Sentry is a desk accessory that adds spell-checking capability to virtually all other accessories and GEM programs. A key feature of Spelling Sentry is its ability to detect spelling errors in real time, while you type. It can also check disk files and the GEM clipboard, and can expand abbreviations in real time. Spelling Sentry's dictionary contains over 100,000 words. Version 1.10 adds the following new features and fixes: * If Spelling Sentry's window is open, it will now jump to the front when you select its entry in the Desk menu. * Spelling Sentry will now capitalize the first word of an expansion if you capitalize the abbreviation. This feature can be turned on or off. * Double-clicking on an alternative word now automatically substitutes that word for the misspelled on. * Spelling Sentry now sounds a tone (on monitors that support it) when you turn background checking on or off with a hotkey. * You can now print abbreviation files from Spelling Sentry. * Spelling Sentry can optionally treat abbreviations as case sensitive or case insensitive. * You can now use a keyboard accelerator to toggle the "Add to user dictionary" button. * When checking a disk file or the clipboard, Spelling Sentry now displays the number of words checked, the number of errors detected, the number of replacements made, and the checking rate in words per minute. * Spelling Sentry's "Check Clipboard" feature now works correctly with the Clipboard CPX and the "Aladdin" program. * Spelling Sentry's INSTALL program and "Check File" feature now works correctly with older TOS versions. The price of Spelling Sentry 1.10 remains at $59.95. Spelling Sentry is available from Atari dealers, or directly from Wintertree Software Inc. Registered owners of Spelling Sentry 1.00 will be pleased to note that this upgrade is free! Patches to convert Spelling Sentry 1.00 to 1.10 are available on CompuServe and GEnie. Or, you can send your original Spelling Sentry disk and a check or money order for $3.00 to cover postage and handling to Wintertree Software Inc. Roger: It looks like in attempting to make screen flashing work on more monitors, we fixed it on some and broke it on others. We'll fix it in the next release. Sorry. Scott: We will probably add "phonetic" alternatives in the next release. I have an experimental version that can, for example, recognize "sikolajy" as a misspelling of "psychology." We've also added about 11,000 more words to the main dictionary. Like I said, this is still in an experimental stage. No definite release date yet. Anna @ Atari Advantage ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 23 Sun Dec 27, 1992 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 20:12 EST BMan: We will probably add longer abbreviations in the next release. Abbreviations are obviously a popular feature in Spelling Sentry. Joe: Do you mean with the "Load during reboot" option set? You might consider turning that off if you have a hard disk. With the "Load during reboot" option enabled, Spelling Sentry loads the entire dictionary into memory (or at least as much as will fit) when you boot. This is fairly time consuming, because the dictionary is about 320K. With the option disabled, Spelling Sentry loads pieces of the dictionary as needed. If you have a hard disk, you can barely notice the delay required to load a piece. If you have a floppy and enough memory, I recommend enabling the "Load during reboot" option. Jeff and Anna: I will upload a 1.10 -> 1.11 patch this week (probably). It takes a while to prepare a patch and test it, but it will happen. The case sensitive works great but I need some help. I know this has to be something dumb but all of my abbreviations come out in lower case. With case sensitive off - capitalize on, abbreviations are lower case no matter what case I type the abbreviation in. With case Sensitive on - capitalize off, abbreviations are in lower case. What am I doing wrong? My main usage of your program is the spell checker so this isn't that big of a deal but it would be nice to find out what I am doing wrong. Thanks, Jeff ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 30 Wed Jan 06, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 18:48 EST Jeff: Try this. Set case-sensitive off and auto-caps on. Type an abbreviation, and make sure you capitalize the first letter (i.e., hold down the shift key). The first letter of the expansion should be capitalized. For example, if the abbreviation is "td" and the expansion is "today," typing "td" should expand to "today" and typing "Td" should expand to "Today." If that doesn't work, let me know. Phil @ Wintertree ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 31 Thu Jan 07, 1993 J.WILES1 at 20:45 EST Phil, I knew this worked for me before but for some reason, all abbreviations came in lower case now. I found the problem though. I was using EDDA Text Editor to test out my abbreviations and apparently this accessory will not capitalize my abbreviations no matter what. Maybe it's time to buy a text editor or find a different one in the libraries. All is working well as long as I type my abbreviations anywhere except in this accessory text editor. Thanks for the help and an excellent program. Jeff ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 32 Sat Jan 09, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 10:33 EST Jeff: Some programs are sensitive to the condition of the shift keys at the point when they receive characters. Spelling Sentry doesn't try to affect the state of the shift keys...it just stuffs characters of the appropriate case into the input stream. It's conceivable (but a bit silly) that the EDDA editor ignores the case of characters it receives, and determines case for itself by examining the shift keys. A program like this won't work with Spelling Sentry. What I mean is this.. I usually keep SS toggled off. Usually about 1/2 way thru a document I'll remember to turn it on. When I do so it immediately tells me that the next few correctly spelled words are incorrect. Calling up the 'correct word' display will show that it thinks I typed part of the last word I had typed before turning it off. In other words, it will show something like "LLYGreetings" where the "LLY" is from a different word...typed maybe many hours ago. The next word I type will show up as 'LLYHello' or whatever. The only way I've found to get SS to stop inserting the 'LLY' is to let it insert a corrected word into my text. Strange, eh? It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it is quite noticeable, as you can imagine. Spelling Sentry doesn't track the arrow keys, because different applications handle them differently (some not at all). Use the backspace key to correct words, and you should be ok. Sandy: As someone suggested, you can use the "Load during reboot" option to prevent disk accesses during checking. If you set memory to 380K and turn "Load during reboot" on, Spelling Sentry will not access the disk during checking. If you set memory to something less, Spelling Sentry will load as much of the dictionary as it can into memory. Words that didn't make it will have to be checked on disk in this case. If you have Spelling Sentry set up this way and it's still accessing the disk during checking, it's possible that it couldn't allocate the memory you requested, so it took what it could. Generally, if you have a hard disk, I recommend leaving the "Load during reboot" option OFF. Spelling Sentry will load the parts of the dictionary that it needs as it needs them. If you don't use words like "xantham" and "zygote," you won't incur the time needed to load the parts of the dictionary containing them. True, there will be a small delay while it loads parts of the dictionary containing words you do use. If that delay gets on your nerves, then by all means use the "Load during reboot" option. The dictionary segments are of varying sizes, ranging from a few hundred bytes to about 20K. When Spelling Sentry checks for a word that happens to exist in one of the larger segments, there may be a very small pause. The easiest is to use your word processor's search/replace feature. The other way is to use Spelling Sentry's "check file" feature. When Spelling Sentry detects the misspelling, select (or enter) the correct spelling, then click on the "Replace All" button. Regarding the backspace delay: Many programs require no backspace delay at all. Because it slows you down, you want to keep it at the lowest value that works for all the programs you use. For example, in my copy of Spelling Sentry, I keep the delay at 0 because none of the programs I use need a higher value. (Ideally, Spelling Sentry would detect which program was running and then set the delay to the right value. Maybe in a future upgrade.) If you have defined an abbreviation, and you want to actually enter the abbreviation in your document without having Spelling Sentry expand it, just turn background checking off temporarily using the hotkey, type your abbreviation, then turn background checking back on, again with the hotkey. See p. 18. If you use the check-file feature, you must save your document to disk first, check it, then re-load it. Spelling Sentry can't change the document when it's in your word processor's memory...it must be on disk. Lorne: No problem. No one has reported that one yet. It comes from a deep, dark, fundamental part of Spelling Sentry. It's possible it ran out of memory. It's also possible that the dictionary has become corrupted. I recommend re- installing. Al: We're contemplating an upgrade to Spelling Sentry that will probably be ready in May or June. One of the changes will involve increasing the number of entries in the alternate spelling list. Also, searching for alternative words will be even better, so there will be a higher probability that the word you're searching for will appear in the list. I should point out that increasing the number of alternative words displayed won't necessarily guarantee that the word you're searching for will appear. If the word is mangled badly enough -- especially near the beginning -- Spelling Sentry won't find it. In experiments we've performed, the alternative words found by the current algorithm after the first 8 or so are less and less like the misspelled word, sometimes having no relation at all (other than a similar vowel-consonant pattern). The 8 words you see are the 8 *best* words. Ken: You can place your Spelling Sentry files (e.g., SENTRY.I, SENTRY.D) anywhere you like. If you move them, you must run INSTALL.PRG to tell SENTRY.ACC where they are. Jeffrey: We've considered making Spelling Sentry sensitive to the running program. However, we have no plans for incorporating that feature currently. That feature will become less useful with the advent of MultiTOS anyway. To Flash II Owners: I have contacted the people who make Flash II, and have been told that it will not permit a desk accessory -- any desk accessory -- to run while it is in terminal mode. Naturally, this includes Spelling Sentry. The problem here lies with the way Flash II operates. I have been told that they are working on correcting the problem to support MultiTOS. Brian: Re-spell-checking (a new compound word I coined to describe what you were asking for) should be part of the next upgrade. Regarding abbreviations that don't expand: My apologies! You had sent me your abbreviation file some time ago. I looked into the problem and forgot to get back to you. Somehow, the entries in your ABR file slipped out of alphabetical order. They must be in order or Spelling Sentry won't find them. Without thinking about it a great deal, it's possible Spelling Sentry did this itself when you used Spelling Sentry 1.10/1.11 to add abbreviations to a 1.00 ABR file. Not your fault: we should have considered this situation more carefully. In any event, the work-around is to delete all the abbreviations from your file, then re-add them. You can reduce the amount of work involved by just deleting and re-adding the entries at the end of the file which are out of order. While you're at it, I have two suggestions.... 1) How about adding the ability to have abbreviation expansion and spell checking turned on independent of each other? (I think this has been mentioned before.) 2) Since SS already supports some GEM messages that other programs can use to communicate with it, I think a couple more are needed. How about adding one to query the current on/off state of spell checking (and abbrev expansion if you add that separately)? Also, a GEM msg to turn on/off each feature would be nice. This would make it easy to write a small utility that could turn SS on and off for certain applications, like Jeff was asking about. Thanks for your consideration. Gordon ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 117 Sat Feb 27, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 08:50 EST Wayne: Yes, you are absolutely right. In fact, Spelling Sentry *does* ensure the .ABR file is in the correct order. However, the correct order changed between versions 1.00 and 1.10; a little bug that slipped between the cracks allowed the two "correct orders" to get mixed, resulting in no order at all. Ted: Yes, phonetic alternatives will be part of the new version. The example I like to give is Spelling Sentry correctly recognizing sikolojee as psychology. There will be, I think, five levels of alternative seaching, each level slower but better than the previous level. As you might guess, phonetic checking is slowest. Brian: Regarding file problems: That problem is news to me. Could you create a very short document (1 sentence), correct a spelling error in it, then mail the before and after files to me? By "print" do you mean literally print (when you press the Print button in the Abbreviation dialog) or do you mean expand? If it's the first problem, that's a new one on me. If it's the second, that can happen if *any* of the abbreviations in your .ABR file are out of order. The entire file must be in order or Spelling Sentry may miss some abbreviations. Wayne: Spelling Sentry shouldn't miss keystrokes regardless of the keyboard sampling rate setting, unless you set it to 999 and use CodeKeys to pump paragraphs of text into a document on a souped-up Falcon . The KB sampling rate selects the trade-off between the "snapiness" of Spelling Sentry and the drain it places on your system. Gordon: Great ideas. They're on the list. A complete cold boot on my system with about 2 megs of AUTO and MultiDesk stuff to load, and the whole SS dictionary, takes about 20 seconds on my system. The loading of the SS dictionary is imperceptible in my boot process... My system is a 16mhz 1040ST with 4 megs. Do you have Pinhead, or Warp 9 3.7x? If not, you should get one of them. Other than that, I can only guess you have something that is slowing down the action of loading a .ACC, like Neoload, or some such. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 141 Sat Mar 13, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 20:26 EST Keep in mind that if you select Load During Reboot and specify 380k of ram for the dictionary, SS will load the entire dictionary into ram during bootup, taking some time. I can't remember how long it took the last time I timed it, but Ted's 8-10 seconds doesn't sound out of line. If you don't select Load During Reboot, or you do but don't allow 380k of ram for the dictionary, then the loading of SS during the bootup process will go much faster. The speed of one's hd shouldn't make a vast difference (in the Load During Reboot/380k scenario above) since I would guess that most of the time spent in dictionary loading time is getting it set up in ram. - Mel ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 142 Sun Mar 14, 1993 T.EVANS21 [] at 09:22 EST Rob, Yes something is strange on my system.. When you select "Load during reboot," Spelling Sentry loads as much of the dictionary as possible when you reboot. If you configure Spelling Sentry for 380K, it will load the whole dictionary into memory at reboot time. Clearly, that will take longer. It seems like the Spelling Sentry accessory wants to load in it's dictionary before MDD has a chance to clear the message. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ JSW ^^^^ ^^^^ ST'er ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Tuesday, March 16, 1993 - 6:15:06 am ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 159 Fri Mar 19, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 18:50 EST Ron - Errr, yup! That sure would explain why you're not seeing any delay in loading the dictionary, you're not doing it. Or, if you have it set for less than 380K, you're only reading a piece of it. I also have mine configured that way too, BTW. SS does a good job of loading it on the fly so I decided to shorten by boot time by turning off the load during reboot option. Gordon ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 160 Fri Mar 19, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 19:26 EST ==================================================================== P R E S S R E L E A S E ==================================================================== Wintertree Software Inc. 43 Rueter St. Nepean, Ontario Canada K2J 3Z9 Phone: (613) 825-6271 For Immediate Release: Date: 19 March 1993 NEPEAN, ONTARIO -- Bigger, better, faster. These three words describe Spelling Sentry 1.20, Wintertree Software's latest upgrade to the popular spelling checker for Atari computers. Spelling Sentry is a spell-checking desk accessory. It watches keystrokes as you type into other GEM programs and accessories, and alerts you when you make a spelling error. Spelling Sentry can also check disk files and the GEM clipboard. Spelling Sentry includes a built-in abbreviation expander that can substitute a text string whenever you type its abbreviation. BIGGER ------ Wintertree has added over 11,000 words to Spelling Sentry's dictionary, bringing the total word count to over 115,000. At the same time, Wintertree reorganized the internal structure of the dictionary to make it both smaller and faster. The result: While the number of words in the dictionary increased by 10.5%, the size of the dictionary increased by only 6.2%. BETTER ------ Wintertree listened to requests and suggestions made by Spelling Sentry owners. Spelling Sentry 1.20 contains a host of new features and improvements: * 16 alternative words are now displayed instead of eight. * Spelling Sentry can now optionally locate alternative words that are phonetically similar to the misspelled word. For example, Spelling Sentry correctly suggests "Atari" in place of "Uhtarry." Spelling Sentry's original method of locating alternative words, based on typographical similarity, is still available. * You can now try a new spelling for a misspelled word, and Spelling Sentry will check it for correctness. * Spelling Sentry's abbreviation feature can now substitute the contents of a disk file wherever an abbreviation is used. * Spelling Sentry's new keyboard capture feature saves time when defining new abbreviations. The keyboard capture feature magically inserts the last few words you typed into the dialog field used to define abbreviations. Other improvements: * Screen flashing now works on all monitors * Improved compatibility with Calamus * Undo key now works reliably when checking disk files * Maximum size of an abbreviation expansion (including files and chaining) is now 1024 characters. FASTER ------ When Wintertree reorganized Spelling Sentry's dictionary to make it smaller, they also made it faster -- 15% faster. When optimally configured, Spelling Sentry can check 2400+ words per minute on a stock ST. The list price of Spelling Sentry 1.20 remains at $59.95. Registered owners who purchased Spelling Sentry on or before 31 December 1992 can upgrade to 1.20 by sending a check or money order for $10.00 to Wintertree Software Inc. Customers who purchased Spelling Sentry 1.00, 1.10, or 1.11 on or after 1 January 1993 can upgrade to version 1.20 at no charge (proof of purchase date is required). All update requests should include the original Spelling Sentry diskette. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 161 Sat Mar 20, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 08:20 EST Phil, The update sounds very nice. Thanks. I got my program only last month, so am eligible for the free update. (Canada Post did get my registration card to you, didn't they?) Since I don't need to send you any money, can you send the update by Fmail? Or do you need the disk back, anyway? Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 165 Sun Mar 21, 1993 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 11:39 EST The changes sound good, but the ONE thing I wanted was for the correct word dialog to come up FIRST if a mismatch was pending, rather than having to wade through the first dialog to get to the correct word dialog. If there is/was a shortcut to this, I seem to have missed it. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 166 Sun Mar 21, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 13:19 EST Ken: Sorry... we can't f-mail 1.20. There's over 500K of changed data. Ron: That's an obvious improvement to Spelling Sentry, and one that's fairly easy to do (in fact, it worked that way originally), but some programs just don't like a dialog to jump on top of them. I'm hoping that the release of MultiTOS will help to smooth some of these incompatibilities. In the interim, we recommend creating a CodeKeys macro to pop up the correct-word dialog. Phil @ Wintertree ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 168 Sun Mar 21, 1993 HUMPHRIES.JR [Roger] at 14:52 EST Phil, I just read the announcement about the upgrade to Spelling Sentry v1.20 and will have my disk in the mail Monday. However, I am busy writing in Word Perfect today, and realize that there are a couple features that would be very handy which I suspect are not in the new version. So if you would like to start your list for the next upgrade, here they are: 1. How about the ability to turn the spell checking and the abbreviation expansion on/off independently. I don't always need or want both, but may not want to get rid of both of them. 2. How about the ability to turn SS on/off automatically when different programs are run. Automating the spell check [and abbreviation expansion, see #1 above :-)] would be most useful, but even the ability to change some of the other options would be helpful. Warp 9, CodeKeys and OutBurST use this technique, using a data file keyed to program names to customize features when the named programs are run. I know I can do it manually... But hey, this is a computer - why should I do the work? Thanks, Roger ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 169 Sun Mar 21, 1993 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 15:12 EST >MultiTOS will help to smooth some of these incompatibilities. In the interim, >we recommend creating a CodeKeys macro to pop up the correct-word dialog. I did, but I can't seem to make it run fast enough to suit my impatient nature.... Even at 16 mhz.. GEM just isn't any speed demon, as you know... ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 171 Sun Mar 21, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 18:25 EST Roger, You wouldn't be able to turn SS off for selected DAs such as STeno or EdHack, no matter what data file format were used. DAs are "always" running to the OS. But it would be nice to be able to turn it on and off automatically for apps like WordPerfect. Al ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 172 Tue Mar 23, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 08:41 EST Roger and Al - Phil has indicated that he is considering expanding SS's ability to respond to GEM messages. If he includes a 'toggle switch' in a future version, it will be possible to write a small utility program that will, when used in a batch file, set the desired state of SS. Gordon ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 174 Thu Mar 25, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 18:54 EST Gordon: Thanks for reminding me! We DID add new GEM pipeline messages to query the background checking state and toggle it. However, "background checking state" still includes both spell-checking and abbreviation expansion. Here's a complete list of changes in Spelling Sentry 1.20: * Reorganized the internal structure of the main dictionary to make it both smaller and faster to access. * Added about 11,000 words to the main dictionary. * Fixed a bug in REGISTER.PRG that caused it to bomb if the entire name field was filled. * Fixed a bug that caused very long registration names to overwrite text in the main window. * Fixed a problem in the correct-word dialog that made Spelling Sentry difficult to use with the text editor in Calamus. * Increased the number of alternative words display in the correct- word dialog to 16. * Added the Recheck button to the correct-word dialog. The Recheck button rechecks the word in the correction field. * Added new alterative-word scanning methods: match first 3 letters; match first letter; match phonetically. * Fixed a bug that caused Spelling Sentry to bomb when abbreviation expansions longer than 64 characters were expanded in the background. * Fixed a problem that prevented the Undo key from being detected reliably during file or clipboard checking. * Increased the maximum total size of an abbreviation expansion, including chaining and file inclusion, to 1024 characters. * Added a new abbreviation macro to substitute the contents of a disk file. * Added the installation path field to the main window. * Added the "Loading dictionary" message. * Added new GEM pipeline messages to sample the background-checking state and toggle background checking. * Fixed a bug that caused Spelling Sentry to hang if the .ABR file was empty. * Added the KB Capture button to the abbreviation editor dialog. KB Capture places the last 40 typed characters into the Expansion field. * Improved the screen-flashing method to work consistently on all monitor types. * Added a message to INSTALL requesting that the working disk be moved to A: before rebooting when installing on a 2-drive system. Phil @ Wintertree ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 175 Thu Mar 25, 1993 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 19:56 EST Phil, A couple people in another area might be interested in Spelling Sentry. They are both Thunder owners and while I assured them that if they liked Thunder (except for the incompatibilities) that they would love SS I was wondering if there is a SS demo available? With a reasonable SS demo I'm sure a lot of converts could be had easily. Heck all you'd have to do is put a few minute time limit on it so they could see how it handles errors. :-) Of course having said that there's probably one on my distribution disk right? :-) Don't ask me where my disk is, I haven't seen the top of my desk in months! Wayne ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 176 Fri Mar 26, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:24 EST Phil, There was an inquiry about SS in the HyperLink topic. Did you catch it? Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 177 Sat Mar 27, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 11:49 EST Phil - Do you have any plans to document the GEM messages for the general public? I'm sure you explain it to owners, but if you put the protocal in the library other programmers could easily add support for it. Just a suggestion. Thanks for adding this feature, I plan on exploiting it very soon. :) Gordon ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 178 Sun Mar 28, 1993 M.ERSOFF at 10:00 EST Hello Phil @ Wintertree Software, Inc., I have been havung a "semi-serious/annoying" problem with Spelling Sentry. It only happens when I am using Pagestream (v. 2.2). Let me first give you a run down of my system. 1) I am using a Mega ST 4 with an AdSpeed accelerator. (TOS 1.4) 2) I use a 19" Moniterm Monitor with the X-Mon driver. 3) I have Spelling Sentry loaded as a MDX accessory in MultiDesk Deluxe. (in is _NON_ resident) 4) I have and ICD hard drive host running v.6.05 boot software. 5) Read and Write cache are both enabled. 6) My Auto folder look like this: C:\AUTO\*.* JAR010 .PRG PINHED18.PRG FOLDR200.PRG POOLFIX4.PRG TOS14FX2.PRG G+PLUS .PRG X_MON .PRG CSHOW60 .PRG FUJIDESK.PRG UIS_III .PRG WARP9_ST.PRG DATADIET.PRG NEOLOAD .PRG OBURSTX .PRG OK, now here's the problem. When I am using Pagestream and I want to spell check a file (using Spelling Sentry) I go to my desk accs and call up MultiDesk Deluxe. From there I call the non-resident Spelling Sentry. All goes well. Spelling Sentry in loaded into my system through MultiDesk and I can spell check anything I want - text files, Word Perfect files, Pagestream .DOC files, etc. The problem is that my origranl file gets ZAPPED. Spelling Sentry gives me this message: ERROR RENAMING TEMPORARY FILE ERROR CODE = 0xffd0 When I go to look for the original file, I has disappeared. I can get around this by enabling auto back-up but all of my files then get the .BAK extension. I would like to know if I can prevent this error by changing something in Spelling Sentry. Or, if you are aware of any conflicts, if I can change ICD BOOT, MultiDesk, etc. to make everything cohabitate in peace. BTW - Spelling Sentry works 100% of the time from the desktop. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks....... Mayer ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 179 Sun Mar 28, 1993 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 18:30 EST Mayer, If you are calling up a file to spell check and that file is still opened by the program you are in, it could spell trouble. You might need to close the original file from word processor you are using before doing the spell check. This kind of problem may become very interesting with the coming of MultiTOS. If you are checking a file not currently opened by an active program, please disregard this obviously wrong advice. If that does not do it, you might try normalizing some files and turning DD off for a test. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 180 Sun Mar 28, 1993 M.ERSOFF at 19:24 EST Joe M, Thanks for the idea. I'll try turning off DataDiet and see what happens. If DD is the culprit, I wonder why it does not interfere with SS from the desktop or any other programs???? Oh well, I'll see what happens. It has been known to cause very strange, and seemingly unrelated (to its function) problems. With a 4 meg machine, you might consider making SS resident. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 184 Sun Mar 28, 1993 B.GOCKLEY [Brian G.] at 23:50 EST On a related subject, Spelling Sentry does seem to have trouble running when there is any networking software present. I get the same exact message, but without the ddisappearing file. From what I can tell, Spelling Sentry is trying to midify an open file, which is a networking no no. Thursday April 15, 1993 7:00 p.m. ------------ Category 13, Topic 17 Message 200 Thu Apr 15, 1993 P.COMEAU1 [Wintertree] at 20:42 EDT To all: Anyone who ordered the Spelling Sentry 1.20 upgrade should be receiving it shortly. However, there are two bugs in 1.20. The first occurs with Multidesk Deluxe: for some reason, MDX reports that Spelling Sentry hasn't registered itself. That one is close to being solved. The second bug is the one Alan Haskell mentioned: abbreviation expansion stops at the first colon. That one is also close to being solved. The bugs listed above will be solved in version 1.21, which should be prepared within the next few days. If you have sent in your upgrade for 1.20, and would like to receive 1.21 when it is ready, send me some email privately. I'll mail 1.21 to you via GEnie. My apologies for any inconvenience. Alan: It's not just you! See the note above. Jim K and Greg: If you purchased Spelling Sentry after 1 January 1993, you can upgrade to 1.20 at no charge. See the press announcement I posted here a couple of weeks ago for details. If you have questions specific to your situation, send me email privately. Ted: Glad you like the upgrade. I bet you have a lot of abbreviations. That problem indicates Spelling Sentry is low on memory. It can occur if you go a long time between reboots. It's usually the result of something called "memory fragmentation." A reboot should make it go away. If rebooting doesn't help, try this: Use a text editor like STeno or Edhak to edit SENTRY.INF. Try setting the value in the RESERVE_MEMORY line to 60 or 80. What kinds of problems are you having with the phonetic part? Lorne: See the note above. We actually have a solution to this problem, but I'm communicating with the CodeHeads to make sure it will work.
