You are now reading the 1st issue of STeve's AtariNOTES!. A combo electronic newsletter/CATALOG that I hope will be worth your download time. I hope you enjoy our 'LATE NIGHT' efforts. I must say 'THANK YOU' to Richard Yamagata for his hard work in the help of putting together STeve's ONLINE AtariNOTES!. Now if you have not heard of STeve's - well let me introduce myself. My name is STeve Kipker, owner of STeve's Atari SALES!, formerly known as STeve's Software. The reason for the small name change is I want people to know that we sell 'Only Atari products' and accessories that will complement your Atari computer like Printers, Cd-Roms, Laser Printers, etc. We are located only a short distance from Atari themselves and we are just Happy as 'Kids in Toys R Us' about selling Atari products... 1993 was a very exciting year for STeve's and Atari. We have seen many changes at Atari, ALL FOR THE BETTER. JAGUARs are making their way into your homes, along with new game cartridges on a regular basis. FALCON 030's are now available through STeve's via mail order. There has been a renewed interest in the Atari LYNX with new titles for 1994 coming. Sales for the PORTFOLIO have increased as well. So as you can see, Atari is both in flight and on the prowl. At STeve's, we are on the cutting edge of Atari evolution, and we intend to continue our relentless drive to support you, "The Atari ....{400, 800, XL, XE, ST, STe, MEGA, FALCON, PORTFOLIO, LYNX and JAGUAR} user". STeve's Atari Sales opened our doors over two years ago to supply Atari support in Yolo County, and since then, STeve's Atari Sales has become the largest exclusively Atari dealer in the Sacramento Valley. STeve's Atari Sales' success is founded upon its fast, friendly service. STeve's Atari Sales offers a toll-free order line for your convenience (800-487-7753) and we are always available to help our customers on our information line (916-661-3328). STeve's Atari Sales would like to THANK YOU for choosing Atari products...the BEST in the business! On GEnie (S.KIPKER), on Delphi contact (ATARISALES), and if the interest is up we will re-consider our attendance on CIS. If you are one CIS you can contact Richard Yamagata for information. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (?W)Why STeve's AtariNOTES? """"""""""""""""""""""""""" You are reading the on-line newsletter that is to replace YACkity YAC On-line, available on CIS. There have been criticisms by some that the doings of a "local" user group are not of interest to an international audience. YAC was meant to be a "national" user group supporting Atari Users by newsletter and modem. Because I have received only critical correspondence concerning the On-Line newsletter contents YACkity YAC On-Line has died to be reborn as something with more of general interest and appeal. Each month I will try to supply an original article or review to STeve's AtariNOTES! (STAN). Since I am still supportive of the concept of Atari modem support, I will continue to write each month a summary of activities on SOARing STar BBS. Each month I will also write detailed descriptions of files that are available for downloading from SOARing STar BBS. These will continue to be engender themes, like GAMES, ART APPLICATIONS, EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE, etc. This will be advantageous to those that own high speed modems. SOARing STar BBS supports 14,400 baud with v.42BIS and MNP5 for an effective transfer of files at up to 15,800 baud (I use F-modem protocol). With the availability of long distance calling plans, down loading large files from SOARing STar BBS is much more economical than doing so from on-line services. For small files, 2400 baud downloads are still economical using DELPHI, GEnie, and CIS. You just have to use some "common sense" in your telecommunication endeavors. If you still have criticisms concerning the contents of this on-line newsletter, do not hesitate to send them to me via CIS. I visit weekly, the Fido Atari ST echo and the ISISnet. I access the CBASE network, monthly. I do read and consider all input. E-mail can also be sent to me in care or S. Kipker on GEnie and DELPHI. Past input has brought about this current change in sponsor and format. Thank you for your interest in downloading this file and for your reading up to this point. G. Richard Yamagata Much thanks must be given to STeve Kipker of STeve's Atari Sales. Without his sponsorship, there would be no on-line newsletter coming from northern California, nor would this publication be as useful. People complain that there is not enough product support for Atari computers. I hope this publication is a step towards supplying your PD/shareware, commercial software and information needs! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ($D)Diamond Back v3.1 Announcments """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" =============================================================================== Diamond Back 3.1 Disk ............. 1 disk by Oregon Research HD Install ....... Richard Yamagata Copyright 1994 All Rights Reserved """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" CANNON FODDER (CF) is, in my opinion, the best commercial game release of 1994 (so far and there is nothing else that I have heard being planned that comes even close). ST Format agrees and ranked it a massive 93% and gave it the coveted ***ST FORMAT GOLD*** award rating! This game is by SENSIBLE SOFTWARE, the company that produced SENSIBLE SOCCER and MEGA-LO-MANIA, both ***RATED ST FORMAT GOLD*** classics that defined their genres, soccer simulation and 'god' game. All other games of those types are measured against these SENSIBLE games! I could compare the game play of CF with some other game to give you an idea of what it is like; but heck, this is a unique game, a stunningly new concept in game play execution for the ST! Where other games pale and are down right boring (like OMNITREND's BREACH), this is fast, fierce, real time arcade action. You hesitate, you think, and your squad is dead! Like real war, only intuitive reaction from actual combat experience will get your group through to the next level or mission. THE GAME PLAY CANNON FODDER is basically a tactical military simulation taken at the squad level. Before each level of action starts, a briefing screen tells you exactly what you must achieve to finish the level. These start out simply, ordering you to kill all enemy troops. They progress to destroying buildings, vehicles, and saving hostages. You control a squad, each trooper depicted on the screen with his own name, rank and abilities. They are led around the screen by left mouse clicks. You basically shoot the enemy and blow up their buildings and vehicles with right mouse clicks. The weapons are machine gun, grenades and rocket launchers, each with their unique characteristics -- but explosive! But the variety does not stop there, at higher levels you get to load your troops on tanks, jeeps, skidoos (a half tracked vehicle for snow), and the crowning touch of all, a helicopter! And from each you can fire unique weapons, like high explosive shells from the tank's cannon, or 60mm burst from the chopper's machine guns. The enemy buildings range from primitive huts to cabins to gun emplacements and bunkers. The terrain is also varied with unique characteristics of which you must take stock to succeed from jungle to desert to arctic and to rocky mountains with deep gorges. Taking in all this variety, each mission is a unique learning experience! The mouse interface is simplistic and easy to master. You can split your squad into 3 groups and control all easily. The advantage of multiple groups is that you can create a massive crossfire that just cleanses the screen of the computer controlled enemy. Accessible by mouse click in the lower left hand corner of the game's play screen is a map overview icon. This map function is necessary for success in playing this game, for without it you do not have any idea where your mission targets are located, let alone where you are. With 25 single or multi-level missions (a total of over 60 levels) you will be hard pressed to finish this game. Each level is successively harder, starting from trivially easy to insanely vicious, but CF's progression of difficulty is evenly paced and not unfair. And, it is not just the enemy soldiers and their progressive use of vehicles that keep you interested and on your toes. Like in real war you have to worry about LANDMINES, booby traps, quick sand, and a river dwelling green thing that munches your men unless you shoot it. The beauty of CANNON FODDER does not end there. Not only is it an exercise in graphic and animation diversity, the programmers have well thought out the artificial intelligence routines of the computer controlled enemy troops. An example of this, I had used 1 too many handgrenades and needed just 1 more. Right besides the last building I needed to blow up with that 1 grenade to finish off the level was a stack of them. I moved the squad in to snatch them up and suddenly from all directions and from the door of the building, enemy troops appeared and wiped out my squad in a deadly crossfire. It takes some forethought and programming skills to pull off such a well orchestrated ambush, and so nicely baited. Another fine touch, if your troops outnumber the enemy, some retreat to blend into the tree line, only to run out when your back is turned and open fire upon your squad. This excellently planned action does not end with these examples, enemy troop armed with rocket launchers, enemy tanks, enemy helicopters, etc., all are programmed with their unique set of tactics that become increasingly difficult to cope with at higher mission levels. CRITICISMS This brings me to the difficulty that I have in actually purchasing CF for my family. What I have to mention are the gruesome graphics. As you shoot the enemy, bloody bits of them fly about the screen. You can continue to shoot them, blasting their red pulpy bodies, so as to make their red smears traverse the screen. On top of this, you can wound an enemy soldier, blowing him open with red entrails hanging out, and he will be wiggling his arms in pain and shooting at you at the same time. For the ultimate in horror, the same thing can happen to one of your troop. All you can do is put him out of his misery and blast your buddy into a bloody pulp. It must be noted the size of these characters are only 3/4ths of an inch tall, but it shows how much a creative artist can depict using limited space and pixels. You may ask why I would even worry or concern myself with the adult realism of the game. I have a 3 year old that loves to play LEMMINGS THE TRIBES and the two THOMAS TANK ENGINE games. I just as soon not have something like this in the house. There is all this talk about the need of a rating system on software. I say if the parents just sit down and play test the software before letting the kids get a hold of it and apply some common sense, they do not need a rating system, let alone government intervention and regulation. Secondly, saying that CF is an accurate wargame simulation is an understatement. It is so realistic, I think it would induce delayed combat stress in even Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf. As an example, after getting troopers Jools and Jops through 4 missions, comprising 5 or 6 levels, Sgt. Jools was leading his squad of 4, when suddenly someone stepped on a mine. While stunned from the explosion and loosing 3 men, the enemy came charging in from 3 directions firing, and in a few seconds everyone in the squad was dead. This is truly a grunt's worse nightmare! This is not a game for young children and combat veterans that suffer from the DTs. It may be that for some, this realism is an excellent reason to purchase and play this arcade-combat simulation. REDEEMING FEATURES CANNON FODDER is not just a game of bloody death and destruction. You must try to get as many of your squad through the mission to be used in the next. This not only is a redeeming feature of the game -- trying to establish a value upon your soldiers' on-going survival, but it also increases the shelf life of the game. You can play over and over, trying to improve upon your mission survival rate and get your squad leader promoted to the highest rand possible by the end of mission 25. Each member that thus survives is promoted and in turn his bullets and rockets travel farther, attributed to his growing combat experience. Members that are killed are replaced with buck privates with limited shooting range. Also, your number of replacements seems to limited to a platoon, 52 individuals. Once these are all gone, you must restart the game from mission 1. But, you have the magic of the save game option. You can save the game at any level and return to it, if you have a favorite group of intrepid troopers you have grown fondly attached to, which you will. This in itself makes CF a wonderful game with which to unwind. You can play a level, save it and come back later. It also has a pause function you can use to freeze the action to recover your wits when the action gets fast, furious and the fortunes of war turn against you. And if you just let the program sit on the loading screen, a CF tune starts issuing forth from the speaker. The song is reminiscent of MONEY, by PINK FLOYD, but instead of MONEY it is WAR! This sampled song is pretty catchy and a treat to experience all by itself. And why the song? It is to get you in the mood for WAR! In the final analysis CANNON FODDER is a superiorly programmed combat simulation with an arcade flavor. This game should be a welcome addition to almost anyone's software library, especially the ST game connoisseur that collects only the games that are destined to be classics. I would like to thank STeve Kipker for letting me extensively play test this game at his shop, STeve's Atari Sales in Woodland, CA. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (!F)FILES On SOARing STar """"""""""""""""""""""""" SOARing STar Art Generation and Conversion Progams. Copyright 1994 Richard Yamagata All Rights Reserved The theme this month is art programs, and we have on SOARing STar BBS the finest SHAREWARE art package available. The rest of the listed programs allow you to display your art as a slide show from disk or hard drive or to convert pictures from one format to another. My favorite format for the ST is SPECTRUM, since it supports 512 colors displayed on the screen at once. Since SPECTRUM art takes a lot of work to create from scratch, the easiest way to generate it is to convert GIF files into Spectrum pics. GIF files can display 100's of thousands of colors from a pallete of millions, and thus a good choice to convert to the Spectrum format. So, get cracking and enjoy this month's offerings, and make some ST art. Most of these files can be found on CIS, DELPHI, and GEnie. If you do not find them there, or if you have a high speed modem (up to 14.4K baud), call SOARing STar BBS at (916) 661-1538. All these files can be found in library area [4], ATARI PAINT AND GRAHPICS. CRACK ART: The Ultimate Shareware Art Package [SS BBS file #1] This is the best color art program for the ST, utilizing the full palette posible on the ST and STe. It was rated 92% by ST Format, higher than any other art program, commercial or PD. This program is SHAREWARE. If you desire a full instruction manual in English, check out the MAY 1993 ST Format. Call STeve's Software or write ST Format for a back issue copy. back issues or if he is out, may be able to supply you with a copy. The interface and docs are in German, but if you are familiar with Degas Elite, you should have very little problem after reading the ST Format Article. Crack Art has the unique ability to be able to extract art from commercial programs, but this takes experimentation. The other powerful features of this program are immense with over 40 special effects, with blurs, anti-aliasing, diffusion, etc. There are 2 drawing modes, 3 block drawing modes, 2 block move modes, 12 block distortion-manipulation modes, and 18 drawing modes. Unlike any other art package, it has its own virus checker, and its own built in games you can play if you need a break from that art job you need to complete. Like other packages, you can access multiple art screens to draw and cut and paste to, and can animate picture sequences. You can select between 50 and 60hz screen access. It can also load and execute custom assembler routines. You have complete access to all GEM functions, accessories and disk operations. This art package rivals and surpasses commercial art packages and is a must have for all serious users of ST computers. DSLIDE [file #21] DELUXE SLIDESHOW is already a part of my software library for it is the best slide show program around. It will load and display picture files saved and created in SPC, SPU, TNY, TN1, TN2, TN3, NEO, PI1, PC1, PI2, PC2, PI3 and PC3 format. It will show all of these picture formats in any of the 3 ST resolutions. It is amazing how good the low to high res conversion and rendition that is displayed on the monochrome monitor, of say, a Degas PC1 file. If you need help in running the program, a stroke of the [Help] key instantly summarizes all the commands and options. You can control the display speed with the function keys and can control the order in which the slides are displayed by writing a script file. The most important feature for the management of my graphics library is the ability of the program to display the name of the picture file being shown. One landscape or planetscape can be so similar, that you may loose track of what is what, as picture after picture is displayed on your ST from disk, hard disk or RAM disk. Unfortunately, this program cannot display SPS files, the ultra-compressed Spectrum format that SPSLIDEX.PRG generates and displays. PHOTOCHROME v3 [file #22] PhotoChrome is an amazing picture converter with an unbelievable number of colors. It can convert QRT .RAW files, 24 bit .IFF files, and Rombo's VIDI ST RGB files to Spectrum 512 with 512 colors on the screen at once from a palette of 512 colors on the ST and 512 colours from a palette of 4096 colors on the STe. Also supported is PhotoChrome's own PCS format and the Amiga HAM format. HAM is best displayed on the ST using one of the video hardware expansions for the MEGA Atari computer lines. For the SPECTRUM picture format from digitalized video Mark Rose, the YAC programmer, says that VIDI creates RGB merges that look alright, but not great. When the pictures are saved from VIDI in RGB mode and merged using PhotoChrome, even more colors will be generated, than using the VIDI packaged software alone. Of course to do all this you have to own a VIDI ST video digitalizer, an RGB splitter, and VIDIchrome (all of which can be purchased from STeve's Software Sales). Lastly, Mark Rose says that the pictures look the best when displayed as PCS files on a STe using the PhotoChrome slide show program. Getting back to PhotoChrome, it can adjust dithering, color registers and the sync rate displayed by your monitor; this is a powerful offering for you on this month's YAC's FD disk. If you want to see the power of PhotoChrome, download any of Mark Rose's uploads to SOARing STar's Atari Paint and Graphics files library. SpoL -- Speed of Light GIF viewer [file #5] SpoL is the fastest GIF viewer in the public domain world today. This is superior to GEM VIEW because of both speed and the ability to show pictures in 512 colors as SPECTRUM is able to handle. This is version 2.6 and version 3.0 will be able to handle a pallete of 4096 colors or STe color graphics. This program is SHAREWARE and with registration you will receive version 3.0. DMJ GIF v3: Convert GIF files to any ST graphic file [file #9] DMJ GIF will convert GIF pictures into SPC, NEO, TNY, PC1, and other picture formats. The reason this program is needed, is that GIF picture formats are not editable by any ST art software that I know of. GIFs are a multi-platform art file format created by Compuserve. GIFs can be found on virturally every BBS. DMJ GIF can convert GIFs using the STe pallete for stunning pictures using the 4096 color pallete and 16 shades of a single color. This is the best converter of GIFs for the ST. GEMVIEW will convert GIFs, but only using 16 colors. This is SHAREWARE. Sending $15 to Damien Jones will get you version 3.1, the faster enhanced version with more picture format conversion options. The program comes with a myriad of support utilities all to help you in converting GIFs to a file format that you can use. SPC is the SPECTRUM 512 art package format and can support 512 colors at once on the screen. NEO and TNY are the NEOchrome picture formats and can support 16 shades of a single color at once on the screen. FIXGIF [file #23] Some GIFs that you will find on Compuserve have imbedded title and script text, which DMJ GIF cannot handle. To avoid needless computer lock-up and crashes, run GIF files through FIX GIF to strip out the text. This program has a very user friendly interface, so there is no excuse not to use it to facillitate the use of DMJ GIF. SPSLIDEX [file #24] This program will take the compressed Spectrum picture files, SPCs, and compress them even more by 8 to 20%. This will mean more pictures will be able to fit be fit on each disk. If you put a copy of this program on each disk, it will display your SPS or SPC files. The SPC format files can be 4096 color pictures for the STe or JRI color board enhanced STF. The SPS format is the smooshed format generated by SPslide. This slide show will show the STe pallete on a regular ST by interlacing the picture. SPSLIDEX was written to support the STe and 512 colors can be displayed at once from a pallete of 4096. Please be warned that SPCs that use the 4096 color pallete should not be "smooshed" by this program. Smooshing will render them unviewable and smooshed STe pictures will not work with this programs slide show function or SPECTRUM 512. This is the perfect slide show program for use with DMJ GIF generated SPC files. TINY UNSTUFF [file #25] Tiny unstuff is provided for those that own an enhanced version of NEOchrome, that can handle the 4096 color pallete. TNY is the compressed format of NEO pictures and can be one-ninth the size of the original NEO picture file. DMJ GIF can generate TNY files, but not NEO picture files. TNY pictures cannot be loaded into NEOchrome, they have to be unstuffed. This program will convert TNY files into NEO and thus is the perfect companion utility for NEOchrome and DMJ GIF. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (@O)ON-LINE WITH SOARing STar BBS """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Copyright 1994 G. Richard Yamagata All Rights Reserved March-April Activities This is the first installation of this column for STeve's AtariNOTES! The purpose of this column is to inform you each month of the activities of our BBS. This not only tells you which new files are available for downloading, but also informs you of on-going debates in the message bases., To make you feel at home on the BBS, I also tell you a little bit about the most active SOARing STar BBS callers. These are not only people that live here in Northern California, but callers that regularly access the BBS each week from as far north as Alaska and Canada; as far south as Mexico; as far West as Hawaii [STORMWALKER]; and as far east as Ohio [Mark Rose] & Boston [NORM!]. IMPORTANT BBS PERSONALITIES This there were 78 new file uploads and 145 messages posted to the Atari ST/STe/OARing STar BBS. Joe Cawley must be acknowledged for his file posts to the BBS this month. He uploaded the largest number of files by a BBS caller. As such, and for his education program uploads, he was given a STeve's Subscriber Exclusive upload access for 30 days. STeve added an additional 17 files to this growing number of PD/SHAREWARE files on SOARing STar BBS. Other major uploaders were GREGCAT, the King of DTP; Eric Hays, YAC VP; John Stoff; Al Taylor; and Brian Irwin. Mark Rose was missed, but after his large upload last month, he had to recoup. Mark did contribute important information for VIDI owners, that was used for the PhotoChrome file description for this month's FD disk. The 2nd annual Mark Rose animation festival is still planned for June YAC meeting. On a sadder note, one of SOARing STar BBS's best supporters, Guy Lee, has tragically lost his wife this month. Gifts to the mortuary fund can be sent to the Lee family in care of STeve's Atari Sales. Guy Lee has generously donated funds to SOARing STar BBS over the past 2 years. He has the highest upload to download ratio on the board. Guy has served the local Atari community as the STAR (Sacramento ST user group) disk librarian, and founded and runs the SAC BBS from his home. SAC BBS serves both the Atari and pc clone communities and is part of the ISIS and CBASE telecommunication networks. Because of Guy Lee's BBS and his encouragement, the Polly Klaas GIF and missing person information files made their way to at least 5 Northern Californian BBSs. Knowledge of this was an appreciated emotional note for some of the Petaluma volunteers during that tragic period of search. In view of Guy Lee's selfless service to the community, I hope at this time you will keep Guy and his son in your prayers or/and thoughts. MESSAGE BASES The YAC message base and the Atari News and Discussion reached 300 messages. Messages 201 to 300 of each of those bases have been collected and placed in a ZIPped file in the on-line magazine area of the BBS's files library. Sequentially summarizing the messages posted, starting from message base 1, the Political News and views base, there were only 2 posts concerning growing anti-semitism in the world. The Movie and T.V. reviews, base 2, continues to be informative. It had 15 posts with the Academy Award ceremonies and the resultant winners as the center of many threads. If you need a complete listing of all the Oscar winners, this is the message base to visit. Just use the search command of Ratsoft using the keyword "Academy" to quickly find it. Peter Jennings' report from Sarajevo, which should earn him some journalistic awards, and Charles Karault's retirement were discussed. As always, the Nielsen polls, and the weekend box office statistics for the top 20 theater releases were posted along with the weekly video sales and rental figures. The Yolo Atari Club message base [3] had 20 posts this month. With a few YAC meeting reminders and related topics, GENEVA was the center of the majority of posts in this base. To remind people, GENEVA is the software of choice for true multi-tasking on the Atari ST machines. This means that you can run simultaneously 2 or more GEM applications at once on your system. There are other features. To learn of them I suggest you access base [3] and ask Eric Kaljumagi or STeve Kipker. The STAR base [4] had 6 posts this month discussing the apparent deficit of @$500 incurred by STAR from organizing the SACE. There are rumors and the actual show income and debits posted do not add up. I would stay tuned for more information on this, and on rumors that there will not be a SACE '95. The STeve's Atari Sales area [5] had 8 posts this month. The majority of these were about repairing ST power supplies. The major announcement in this base was that STeve's Atari Sales (and other dealers) are now allowed by Atari Corp. to sell FALCONs by mail order. There were the usual testimonials cross-posts from the FidoNet about STeve's Atari Sales. The Atari News and Discussion base [7] had 25 messages. Eric Hays posted that he has suffered from the partition overflow problem on the FALCON. If you save files to the FALCON internal hard drive and fill a partition passed capacity, the extra bytes are carried over to the next partition, obliterating it. If you know of a fix or a way to prevent this, ST Format and Eric Hays, among many, would like to hear from you. One solution I have been told is to use ICD utilities to format and access the hard drive. A second problem that Eric is having concerns his 14.4K baud SPORTSTER modem. SOARing STar slows down in its text flow to Eric's system and finally will disconnect him. Rod Swanson is looking for a slide show program that will sequentially display GIFs from a CD-ROM. If you have any insight into solving either of these problems, please post them or contact Eric Hays at the YAC numbers provided in the Resource File provided at the end of the newsletter. Other threads that need your input are whether or not SOARing STar should continue to not allow handles in most of its areas and as to whether or not SOARing STar should carry ST Reports in its magazine files area for downloading. The On-line games message area [8] has picked up activity as 7 posts made their way here, mostly sabre rattling - portending an up-coming intergalactic war in SPACE EMPIRE ELITE. SEE is currently the most popular on-line game with 9 participants. AIR DEFENSE is the second most active game with 6 participants and had 1 message posted here. The Trek base [9] had only 5 posts this month, but they were huge ones. They all sported the latest information concerning the plots and guest stars of ST tng. The latest edition of the on-line Trek newsletter continue to be posted here as an x-fer file. In the coming month look for a complete plot synopsis for STAR TREK VII to be posted here. The HEADLINE NEWS message base [10] continues to be the busiest base on SOARing STar with 44 posts this past month. The latest news headlines were and are posted at least every other day. The news posts on Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan finally drew to a close within the news posts from Chiba Japan, the site of the world iceskating championships. Whitewater, Korea, and Bosnia continued to be followed closely. If there is some news area you wished covered, all you have to do is ask and I will try to provide coverage. The goal of the news message base is to prevent those heavy into using their modems from losing touch with current events in the news. In message base [11], RATSOFT/ST BBS Q' & A', Al Taylor and Todd Harrington strove mightily to solve Eric Hays' modem problem, occupying the majority of the 13 posts. Todd with his comments and attached file helped STeve to repair SOARing STar's "Top Downloads" command in the files area. This function is integral to this column's files summary and I give thanks to Todd and to STeve for repairing this. Again, this message area is the place to visit to learn how to best access SOARing STar BBS. If you are having problems, do not hesitate to ask for help here. SOARing STar is proud to be a registered RATSOFT BBS. Files Library Area There was about the same number of new posts this month to the BBS as last month. All the programs from the March '94 FD disk, gags and gimmicks, now can be found in the SOARing STar files library. Remember, if it costs too much for you to call long distance, you can order the YAC Freely Distributable program disk for $1 if you are a YAC member or $2 if you are not. You may order the current month's disk or any of the others that are described in the back issues of this newsletter mailed to your home or found abridged on CIS, GEnie or on SOARing STar BBS [phone: (916) 661-1538]. New BABYLON 5 and THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE picture files can be found in the ATARI PAINT AND GRAPHICS files area. CV TRANSLATOR (CVT) can translate documents written in 5 different languages into English. There is a supplementary dictionary file for CVT also available here. Joe Cawley uploaded many file, the most significant of which is the BARNYARD MATCH UP educational program. STeve Kipker has placed on-line all of JV Enterprises' shareware files and others, which do not have file descriptions written for them. If you just write a description and send it by E-mail to me and you will be compensated with file upload credit. YAC, SOARing STar, and myself, would like to thank all of those who uploaded files this month. There were 78 new files posted this month and were as follows [files area number is in brackets] (most notable files to download are in parenthesis): [1] DEMO Entertainment titles-- 1 post (IMPERIAL CONQUEST) [3] Atari Productivity-- 4 post (HyperLINK modules; DIARY) [4] Atari Utilities-- 31 posts (CV TRANSLATOR v3.0; STZIP v2.5) [5] Atari Desk Top Publishing-- 1 post (AVION, a type 1 font) [6] Atari Paint and Graphics-- 4 posts (BABYLON 5 pictures; MINI-DRAFT, a graphics creation program) [8] Atari On-line Magazines-- 14 posts (many free, not charged to the downloads/uploads ratio to access; Atari Explorer On-line, ZNET, GEnie Lamp, ST Format Magazine summary, YACkity YAC On-Line) [9] Atari MIDI Sound-- 1 post (collection of music files) [11] Atari Color Games-- 12 posts (THURG N' MURG, a platform game) [12] Atari Education Applications-- 8 posts (BARNYARD MATCH-UP, MORE THOMAS MDRAW, ELLE MOUSE coloring book) [15] Atari Works Support files-- 2 posts (DESCRIPTIONS NEEDED!)
