If you were to create color images, in what format would you save them? There's no (true) standard for saving of color images, so I disallowed them for now, but if there are enough people using a particular format, I may allow them. Tomas, Oh-oh...I just realized that it's Columbus Day. The helium filled upgrade may not hit the Ozone until tomorrow. It certainly has a high-pitched sigh, though. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 4 Mon Oct 11, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 14:50 EDT John, I did as you suggested, removing HotWire from my setup and then attempting to make the Clock module work from within W9. No luck! With or without HW, the only way it seems to work is in 'test' mode or by renaming the file extension to prg and running it that way. Therefore I DO know that it works, just not the way it's supposed to! Btw, thanks for clarifying the use of FRAMES. I've been holding back on further experimenting with my images until being told that they had to be EXACTLY 64x64. Hopefully my efforts will now be successful. This would seem like a silly request since you are handling thousands of upgrades these days but since you made me that special offer to bundle the disk with two others I had sent back for repair i thought you might remember. Now if you have to do a search to see if you've sent me the disk, dont' bother looking. I'll wait to get it. I'm asking cause I'm looking forward to having the clock screensaver. I think it's a great idea. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 8 Tue Oct 12, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 00:43 EDT MCH - Actually, I did the Swimming Fishes module. John's name still appears as the authors because Image Swap doesn't allow you to put your own name in there. :( I appreciate the compliment just the same! Of course, I could've changed it in a sector editor to give myself credit, but I didn't know if that was cool with the CodeHeads. If it is, I'll do so on the next ones I upload. I would _love_ to be able to use color images for these modules. If a standard color format can't be found to use, perhaps a more 'standardized' format could be used, or even something could be written to convert one color format (DEGAS?) to the IMG format that Thrones uses? Just a thought. - Mick ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 9 Tue Oct 12, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 01:01 EDT Mr. Kellogg, What's in a name? John, Stay out of the helium now, you promised. I know there are a couple or three different protocols for Color IMG's. I don't really know the pros and cons of each. Perhaps we can reach some consensus in this topic as to which standard the Codeheads should adopt. But until THRONES allows the use of color IMG's, its really not going to begin to compare to some of the Windows screen savers I've seen. A good example being the Windows FISH which are of the multicolored tropical variety. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 12 Tue Oct 12, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 13:11 EDT Oh, that's what happened. I wondered which John was being credited for Swimming Fishes. When one uses Image Swap to install her own images, she hasn't rewritten any of the module, only changed the artwork. The module is still my creation. That's why the byline needs to remain as is. You'll note I put the version number there because it's normally on the title line. If someone wants to get credit for the artwork, he can put his name in the title line (or make a billboard out of the fixed image ). Thanks, W.D. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 18 Tue Oct 12, 1993 B.SEMAAN [BOSEM] at 23:32 EDT John- I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. Yes, the CLOCKSET prg does work in interactive mode. What I was meant to say was the prg does not work for initializing the internal Z-Time clock. According to the Hot-Wire release notes 2.0, page 6, under the heading 'New Feature in CLOCKSET.PRG 1.1' putting CLOCKSET in the auto folder should automatically initialize the GEMDOS clock allowing me to 'get rid of the Z-Time software'. I tried all sorts of things, including disabling all auto and acc prgs except Hot-Wire 3.0 and Clocksetter 1.1 to no avail, the time would still come up wrong. As for using CLOCKSET for changing the time and/or date, yes, it did work with Z-Time. I believe I ended up using the AREAL clock prg for boot initialization, instead. Unfortunately, I cannot reconfirm the incompatibility as I have since removed the Z-Time chip and started using the clock on my ICD host adapter which uses the harddisk driver for updating the time. -Bob ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 19 Wed Oct 13, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 02:46 EDT I've just uploaded another Extend-O-Save module made with Image Swap. This one is sharks swimming around. It came out better than Swimming Fishes I think. Nothing in my DAT file for this since I got the new upgrade. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 24 Wed Oct 13, 1993 H.WOLFE1 [Harvey] at 23:08 EDT Charles and John, now that I'm using version 3.8 of Warp 9, my version 3.50 DAT files don't seem to be disabling screen acceleration anymore. I assume that this either means that I should be modifying them in some way or that I somehow messed them up. Either way, when I looked in the version 3.80 manual addendum, there were a number of sections which referred to the DAT file and there was also this comment, "See the section in your manual titled 'Automatic Control of Warp 9' for full details on the DAT file." I have been searching both manuals for this section and I can't find anything like it. I would really appreciate it if you would refer me to the appropriate section. By the way, since no one else has mentioned it, the addendum doesn't have page numbers. I realize that this isn't of great importance, but I personally prefer them. Thank you, Harvey Wolfe P.S. After I wrote this message, I skimmed over some earlier messages that I've retained and found this comment from Charles: "John G., The names of the programs in your DAT file must be in upper case; that's probably why it isn't working. (I just noticed that this requirement isn't mentioned in Appendix E of the Warp 9 manual. Sorry!)" My manual does not have appendix E. It only has Appendices A to D. Would it be possible to get a copy of appendix E? P.P.S. I have just discovered the program DATMAN. It's marvellous. It created a new DAT file for me that works perfectly. However, I would still appreciate receiving a copy of appendix E. I'd also like to thank Thomas Wrather for solving my problem. DATMAN is an extremely handy program and I hope that the Codeheads will consider including it on their Warp 9 disk (assuming that he has no objection). ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 25 Thu Oct 14, 1993 M.RIVMAN1 [MATT] at 00:28 EDT Liquid Pixels... eeewwwww! We want Liquid Pixels! Keep 'em coming, Matt ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 26 Thu Oct 14, 1993 C.KERNS [Craig] at 00:30 EDT Mick, Thanks for the Fish and Jaws EOS modules. One problem I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned to you is that the configurations cannot be saved, and my machine (TOS 1.2) bombed when I made the attempt. A little detective work with EdHak revealed that the file names embedded near the end of the modules were FISHES_5.EXT and JAWS_II.EXT instead of their actual names as they appear in the ZIP files off GEnie (FISHES.EXT and JAWS.EXT). EdHak fixed the problem, but thought I'd mention it for you and other Throne artists and users. Keep 'Em Coming... Craig ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 27 Thu Oct 14, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 02:15 EDT Harvey, The "Second Printing" of the Warp 9 manual contains Appendix E on page 46. Since we knew that many people would only have the first printing, we retained this information in the README!!.375 file ("Automatic Control of Warp 9"), which you'll find on your Warp 9 3.75 disk (or backup). I thought this section was included in the Addendum as well, but it doesn't seem to be there. We're aware that there are no page numbers in the Addendum and it makes it more difficult for us to refer to a page, but we haven't had time to modify the document and no one had mentioned it until now. I haven't had time to examine the problem you posted a few days ago, but I've got the printout laying on my desk. Craig, Flying Thrones and derivatives look for an "EXT" extension when saving. If you leave the file (or a copy) named EXT, you'll have no problem saving. The crashing when it can't find its file is a bug which I fixed shortly after uploading v1.1. Version 1.1a is now on the master disks for Warp 9, but I didn't think it was important enough to reupload to the library. Just think of it as a disabled function of the demo. Owners of v3.80 don't have this problem because they load the EXT as an EOS module. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 28 Thu Oct 14, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 03:24 EDT Craig, Thanks for the detective work on the two EOS modules. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 29 Thu Oct 14, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 03:42 EDT Harvey, You're trapped in the documentation twilite zone. I'll bet your copy of the Warp 9 (main) manual has a red stripe on the back? That was a very early run of the manual. I'm glad your problem was solved by using DATMAN. It is excellent. And I hope we can make put it on the disk also. Good idea! So... everybody take a pencil and write "page 1" on the page starting with the words "Installing Warp 9 v3.80" and "page 30" on, well, the back cover. There's gonna be a quiz. Now, I know some of you are even now reaching for your manuals to find out what color your "stripe" is. The correct and current color is blue. Happy hunting. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 30 Thu Oct 14, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 03:55 EDT Craig - After uploading the Fishes module, I too discovered that the configuration menu will bomb when attempting to save. * NOTE - this is not a problem at all with Warp 9 or Image Swap! It is all my fault due to that fact that I decided to change the title of the module with a sector editor instead of just re- creating the module with the filename I wanted. My bad. From now on, I won't upload anything until I'm finished with it! ;) I have a fixed version of the Swimming Fishes, and a newer, more animated version of the Jaws module (This one is actually Jaws II). If it's important enough to anyone, I'll upload the fixed Swimming Fishes (sans the IMG's) and the new, improved Jaws II. It's quite a bit better. Just let me know. And thanks Craig for pointing the problem out. I was hoping nobody would notice! ;) - Mick ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 31 Thu Oct 14, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 04:21 EDT Al & Craig - Does the saving configuration problem occur on _both_ of the modules I uploaded? I was under the impression that I onoy screwed one of them up! If so a big 'sorry' to all who took the time to download them. As I've said before, the problem is all my fault, not the fault of anything from the CodeHeads. Who the heck was dumb enough to let me get my hands on a sector editor anyway? Talk about an accident waiting to happen! I have fixed versions of both. I'll get them up if anyone wants them. Jaws II is a bit improved over Jaws!. I can't be the only one playing with Image Swap. I'd like to see what someone else comes up with. It's a funny world....I was just working on the Mac and I noticed that one of the fonts was called "Geneva", so naturally I thought I'd asked a really silly question. I'm glad that there was something concrete to reply about. To anyone... I thought I saw a discussion about a way to randomly run EOS modules. In other words, you have a bunch of your fav's in a folder and then some application will randomly pick a different one to run whenever the saver kicks in. I like so many of them that it's hard to stick to just one for any length of time. Thanks in advance..... ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 34 Thu Oct 14, 1993 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 21:18 EDT Mick, Haven't seen any of the fish flying yet, just swimming, they are great. I like both fishes and jaws, I for one (an old scuba diver) would like get the updated Jaws II and fishes. John, I may have found a bug (not cricket). If I try to use the PYRO EOS the fade corner becomes disabled and I'm not sure but I think the entire screen saver is also disabled. I'm trying to find time to work on some variations myself and I'm sure there are many others doing the same... John, I'm encountering the same problem with the SlideShow module on my ST that I have had with the Digital Clock saver. Only works in 'test' mode. Therefore, I never had a Warp 9 3.75 disk. Furthermore, this file is not on the Warp 9 3.80 disks. Finally, since I am also one of the lucky owners of the original Warp 9 manual, that means that I am also missing appendix E. In other words, I do not have the DAT file information on paper, disk or in any other form known to mankind :-((. That's why I keep asking you to Email it to me. By the way, I am probably not the only person with this problem. It's just that it's easier for me to bother you since I'm on Genie :-). So, for what my opinion is worth, I'd really suggest that you include this file on your version 3.80 Warp 9 disks. Mick and others, Fishes and Jaws are really fun. I think you'll get a more satisfying "look" if your images appear to face the same direction as the thrones instead of hard left or right. If you want suggestions, how about flying bumper cars? Are there any "R-rated" screensavers in the works? (Hee, hee) Keep up the great work! Harvey, Thanks for the information. In this one, the sharks don't look so docile! This time, they look like they're hungry and nippin' at those little fishies and each other. Much more entertaining to watch. I'm going to do some work on the Swimming Fishes module before uploading it. It's just not as good as I'd like it to be. The new version won't have the SAVE problem I created in the other one. I learned not to mess with them in any unconventional way. :) Glad y'all like them! - Mick ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 41 Fri Oct 15, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 04:20 EDT Tomas - I know what you mean about having the images face the same direction as the thrones, but I'm no artist, so drawing profiles of things is much easier for me. Also 64x64 is a little constraining for me personally, but I'm working on it. Thanks for the compliment though! And actually, I did have one "R-rated" module in mind. Not R-rated really, just kind of adult. I even attempted to draw the images, but it just didn't work out. The weekend's coming up though, so maybe I'll get some 'inspiration'. :) :) :) - Mick ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 42 Fri Oct 15, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:49 EDT I have a red-stripe manual, but got the DAT file stuff in a README somewhere along the line. Harvey, An ASCII version of Appendix E is contained in the README files of versions 3.60 (your original version) through 3.75. I'm not refusing to send it to you, I'm just trying to give you the easiest way to obtain it (in this case, your 3.60 backup disk). Your query has made me realize that there may be some people who would not get this info if they update from 3.50 to 3.80. New CodeHead-written EOS modules will probably not be tested on older versions of Warp 9. David, I think you're going to need Prism Paint files. I plan to upload some 256 color PNT files shortly. Just proves that the sequel sometimes IS better than the original!! Keep up the great work... John, Yes, I did set my 'picture directory' from the configuration box and saved it. When I rechecked it, I got the file selector showing me the appropriate folder with the pics I want to see. This wasn't really surprising to me, because in 'test' mode I'm seeing exactly what I should be seeing. I don't really understand this. Every single EOS module works perfectly for me except for this one and Digital Clock, and both exhibit the same aforementioned behavior. Ken Van ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 57 Sat Oct 16, 1993 C.OINES1 [Chazz] at 07:18 EDT Had a complete lock-up while it was doing the Rain Man thing on my Falcon. Had to hit the little rubber button to reset; everything else was frozen out. This happened after about 15 minutes or so, and did so several times. The auto folder had Deskmanager, Warp 9, the latest Bconmap fix, and BOB.PRG in it; the accessories were Warp 9 CP, EOSTimer, ProCalc, and the latest XControl. Those written by other authors, which don't require any of the new features of 3.80 should work with older versions of Warp 9. We're trying to make it clear that we're definitely supporting the new upgrade. One way is by releasing new modules supporting v3.80. Are you still awaiting your upgrade order? I can check on it if you like. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 59 Sat Oct 16, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 12:14 EDT Ken Van, Just replace the modules that have been updated. The others are not obsolete. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 60 Sat Oct 16, 1993 OUTRIDER [Terry] at 13:01 EDT Liquid Pixels is such a neat module, but I really feel like it's missing something by not having a random mode. I realize that it doesn't really lend itself to randomizing, given that each setting requires different values assigned to it to be effective. Perhaps it could save individual values for each setting, or simply randomize the values within a given range, also? I'm not complaining, mind you. I'm just spoiled by the modules, such as Flying Shapes, that offer random settings, rather than being tied to one specific setting. I like virtually all of the LP settings, so it'd be neat to have them randomly selected everytime the screen resets. Maybe I'll just make a different copy for each setting and let Moving Pictures do its thing. :^) In any case, thanks, John! These new modules are great. I _really_ look forward to each and every new one you guys put out! If you have any suggestions as to how we can spread this information in a more thorough manner, please let us know. Ken Van, Warp 9 is completely backward-compatible. You can use any existing EOS module with Warp 9 3.80. Chazz, This lockup problem seems to happen occasionally and we've never been able to figure out why. I've never heard a report of a lockup when a keypress was used to bring back the screen, though. It's a good practice to always use a keypress to kick out the screensaver. But I think the answer is to have a set of Deviation and Pause values for each mode and then randomize between modes. If you have Deskmanager, you can load each EOS module into Warp and save. Copy each .CNF file that is created to a folder, each with a slightly different name (be carefull here). Edit Deskmanager's presets giving it the instruction to copy one of the Warp .CNF files to the PROPER directory with the PROPER name. You might call each of the presets EOS1, EOS2 etc. Of course, not really random, but you might forget which EOS is which and get somewhat unpredictable results. I love Warp9. My current setup is one that I've been using for many-a-month, with no problems occuring with any CodeHead software. But, whenever I try to run these "run-only" modules from MaxiFile, they issue three bombs and quit immediately. Could this be occuring because I have my older version of W9 (3.74) installed when I try to run these? Otherwise, I can't think of anything that could cause these demos to crash. Just got my 3.80 upgrade yesterday (thanks for the fast service, as usual) and immediately went to load it up on both my TT and developer Falcon. Everything runs fine on the TT - and I love Flying Thrones! :-) The kids think it's great too! I'm having an EOS problem on the Falcon though. Although W9 by itself runs just fine, when a screen saver kicks in, it blows the resolution away. Interestingly, I can load *and test* the two files I've got on the system (Mandela and Thrones) without any problem, but as soon as the screen saver kicks in by itself, or if I move the mouse to the upper right corner to force it on, the monitor goes way off frequency and the only way back is a reboot. I've got nothing else unusual running on the system. Atari's patch and enhancement programs are running (like FOLDR100 and MACCEL34) and for DAs I've got the XControl Panel and W9 CP, but that's it. I've tried this in all resolutions and I get the same result. The problem *might* be related to the fact that I've got a German machine. I've got a hunch that, for some reason, when the EOS module kicks in its switching to 50Hz. I've got my old SC1224 monitor hooked up to the beast. Any ideas? Usual setup includes 1040ST, TOS 1.62, 2 megs RAM, Geneva, Warp9, NeoDesk, Silkmouse, Datalite2, andvarious TOS patches and ACC's. Bare bones is same machine, with just Datalite2. After an exhaustive search, I think I've discovered that THRONES will not run if HOTWIRE, FLASHDSK, WARP9, DATALITE, and MULTIDESK are loaded. I use a Diamond Scan monitor with my Falcon. It seems to often go out-of-sync, but only upon reset. Turning the monitor off and on again puts it back in sync. When your screensaver problem happens, can you solve it by toggling the power? If not, it must be due to a 50Hz problem as you suggested. If so, it still doesn't help much because you obviously don't want to do that every time the screensaver kicks in. How about turning off the "Alt. Screen" button? That would eliminate the altering of the screen base address and might avoid the problem. Also, does the problem happen with the "Default Screensaver"? Matt, Thanks for the report. Rod, Yow. Yup - the "EOS" active box is X-ed. ARGH! (No problems at all on the TT - strange!) I did try turning "Alt. Screen" on and off, and that didn't matter either. I used it before on 4, but now it seems as though the acceleration is double. How do I tame this thing? That gives it more value than just being able to run with Speedo. Just a comment about upgrade procedures. I'm aware of EASY_UP, but you mentioned earlier that you had people send in disks because you were concerned they would sell the previous version. This has been a concern of mine for some time. It was my understanding that it was ethical to sell an older version of software after upgrading to a newer version if the buyer knows that he/she will not be able to upgrade, or at any time if you transfer the ownership and upgrade rights to the buyer. I guess it depends on the developer's records whether they would get caught if they both tried to upgrade. Of course, if you sell the software you're supposed to delete any copies you have. I know this is off topic, but what is your position on this. (I think you know that I try to do the right thing.) An additional note the problem I posted tonight. (My phone was out of order since Saturday afternoon!) When the weirdness happens, WARP-9.ACC tells me I'm in mouse 1, when I switch to mouse 4 I'm OK. I have the DAT file set up for mouse 4 with Cal, so why am I getting 1? BTW, I like Liquid Pixels, too. Haven't tried it in color, yet. Tomas, Thanks. Otherwise, 3.80 is still the latest version. The "chance of toast" variable is currently set at "4" (chances are one out of 4 that a new object will be the stationary object). You can change this with a disk editor. At an offset of $BE8 (3048), you'll find a $0004. You can increase this value to decrease the frequency of eggs (or toilet paper, or toast, or fish, etc.). :^) Thrones (or alternate images) will bounce up and down rapidly when they are trapped by surrounding images as they look for a way out. Frank, Most likely, Warp 9 is not looking in the same place that you think it is. To test your DAT file, use "Load Program DAT File" to manually load it. You can then test to see if your DAT file is working by running a program for which you've defined some parameters (mouse block/jump is a sure way to tell). After you've determined that your DAT file works, you can figure out why Warp 9's not finding it. The Warp 9 AUTO folder program looks for WARP9.DAT in the root of your boot drive. When the W9 Control Panel loads, it looks for a resolution-specific DAT file in your default Warp 9 folder. If it finds one, it will override the other one. Make sure you don't have an old TTHIGH.DAT (or whatever) file in your Warp 9 folder. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 119 Wed Oct 20, 1993 C.CASSADAY [Chris C.] at 03:46 EDT Well, the Codeheads came through yet again. I ordered my 3.81 upgrade last week on Tuesday, and received the package on Monday of this week. The CodeTemps must be doing a great job. I didn't get a chance to fool with the new EOS modules very much yesterday, but I was having a terrible time with them. Every time I would go into the Warp 9 CP to load a new EOS module, then push the mouse to the Fade Now corner, I'd get a bomb. It varied from CHK Instructions (6 bombs), to Illegal Instruction errors (4 bombs), and of course some Bus Errors. I didn't have time to fool with it yesterday, but I took some time today and did some troubleshooting. I stripped my system down to the bare bones - TT030 - TOS 3.06 - 8 megs RAM, 4 ST/4 TT - Warp 9 3.81 - EOS Timer - Warp 9 CP. I have the Warp 9 CP configured to load DEFAULT.EXT, which at the time happened to be Pyro by John E. I selected Thrones 1.1, and immediately went to the Fade Now corner. 2 Bombs. I rebooted and repeated this with just about every single EOS module I have. Every time after going to the Fade Now corner, a crash would occur. I even tried using the Test option in some of the modules, but it too would cause a crash. I also tried some of them after exiting the Warp 9 CP, but they also crashed. I think I got lucky in identifying the culprit. The first thing I did was to check the fastload / TT RAM bits of all of the EOS modules, and of the new Warp 9 program and CP. Warp 9 had its fast load bit set, so I cleared it. (I don't remember if its okay to set it.) I set the TT RAM flags on the Warp 9 CP, but did not set the fastload bit. I then checked all of the EOS modules. None of them had any of the TT RAM / fastload bits set, so I set all of them to load and use TT RAM. (No fastloading.) After rebooting, I found that I could freely load and change EOS modules without any crashes what-so-ever. It looks like TT owners should run this gambit if they are having problems with EOS modules. John, can you offer any clarification or insight to this? Terry, It's been so long since I set up Moving Pictures 2.0, that I don't remember if you ask for shareware donations. Do you? Chris ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 120 Wed Oct 20, 1993 G.FUHRMAN [gnox] at 05:32 EDT Bob, On my TT, which has all sorts of stuff in the AUTO folder, there's no conflict between Warp 9 screen fonts and Speedo. But I have the Speedo accessories set up as non-resident MDXs, and the Warp 9 Control Panel as a resident ACC, in MultiDesk. Maybe that makes a difference. (Or the AUTO folder order). Chris, I have all my EOS modules running in and using ST ram, and haven't had any problems. In fact all my AUTO prgs and ACCs, _except_ Warp 9 itself, use ST ram. I thought this information might be useful for troubleshooters ... but maybe I'm just lucky with my setup. gnox ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 121 Wed Oct 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 05:36 EDT Al, Thanks for pointing that out. The Appendix E text I uploaded is very old (from v3.60). At that time fonts could not be controlled from the DAT file. The line about fonts was pulled out of the text before Appendix E was added to the manual. In my quick skim of this info, I missed that line. Please disregard it. Now I suppose I better yank the upload and reup it without that erroneous info. Boy, this Appendix E thing sure has been much ado about nothing. W.D., I'm sorry that our brochure contains incorrect information. At the time we printed it, we were unaware that the TEC didn't work in the Stacy. Unfortunately, we can't afford to dump a couple thousand dollars worth of brochures to correct an error like that. I hope our mistake hasn't been a major inconvenience to you. Bob Semaan, Yes, the Warp 9 fonts work whether Speedo is loaded or not. Are you running Warp 9 before Speedo in your AUTO folder? That's what we recommend and if you're not, it may be the cause of your problem. Steve, I didn't think so. ;^) John, Your answer to Frank may solve my problem. Maybe WARP 9 isn't finding the right DAT file. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 124 Wed Oct 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 15:02 EDT Chris, I'm not sure why it even makes a difference how your flags are set for W9 CP and EOS modules. The Warp 9 AUTO program is shipped with all of the flags set. It runs fine in TT RAM and the reason we set its fastload bit is because its designed to run early in your AUTO folder so that it can "fastload" the rest of the programs and you'll want it to fastload as well. The Warp 9 CP and all EOS modules are shipped without any flags set. We've never had a problem with any of them in their default state. The flags in the EOS modules have no effect anyway because the Control Panel loads them directly into its own memory and fastloads them regardless of any settings. Perhaps the difference is that we always keep the W9 CP inside of MultiDesk, but I just ran a test without MultiDesk installed and had no problem with the CP or any EOS modules in their default state. All I can say is that if you got it working, great. There shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 125 Wed Oct 20, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 16:16 EDT Ken Van, The WARP9.DAT file should be in the root of your boot drive. If that's the only DAT file you have, it will be used. But... _If_ you have a resolution-specific DAT file matching the current resolution (STHIGH.DAT,TTMEDIUM.DAT, etc.) in your default path, the W9 Control Panel will find it and use it, overriding the WARP9.DAT file stored on the root of C. This powerful set of options is a two-edged sword. It offers flexibility as well as confusion. The same dilemma exists with MultiDesk and its loading of MLT files vs. its internally-saved config and CodeKeys and its loading of KEY and LNK files. Charles uploaded two versions (1.0 and 1.1) which both exhibited the problem. I uploaded version 1.1a (although the module itself still says 1.1). I was able to duplicate the problem here and v1.1a solved it. I haven't seen anyone specifically say that v1.1a did not work for them, although I suspect that with the number of reports here you must be talking about 1.1a. If you're having a problem with v1.1a, do you have a Z-Time clock? Paul Varn, It shouldn't matter where MOVEPICS runs in your AUTO folder (although it needs to run before the programs needing the files it handles). As I understand it, it's not a resident program. It simply does its job and exits (like Desk Manager). (Correct me if I'm wrong, Terry). Bob, We don't know why GEM doesn't use Warp 9's font on the Falcon. Warp 9 uses the documented font pointer to replace the system font. If the system doesn't use this when Speedo is installed, there may be nothing we can do about it. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 152 Fri Oct 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 05:39 EDT OK, it seems that the only ones that still have problems with the Clock module are those without a "native" clock in their computer. This is the same old problem we had with CodeKeys and MIDI Spy, although the Clock module is using the techniques which solved the problem in those programs. We'll have to wait for Charles to come back. Terry, OK, I guess there _is_ some need for a specific order between MOVEPICS and Speedo. Spud Boy, Warp 9 has no problem with any of the ST resolutions. Certainly XBOOT must work in ST Medium or ST High. Just use the HDUTIL to set one of these resolutions. I find it hard to believe that XBOOT can't boot from an ST Low res screen, though. Thanks, Kent ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 155 Fri Oct 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 15:40 EDT Ken Van, I don't think you're quite understanding the purpose of the DAT file. A DAT file is used to temporarily enable and disable features of Warp 9 when you run specified programs. The "nil" setting in Datman simply means "don't specify this option" (as you said "I don't know and I don't care") and a command for that item will not be added to the entry for that program: GUMBY.PRG B1 - Turn mouse blocking on for Gumby GUMBY.PRG B0 - Turn mouse blocking off for Gumby GUMBY.PRG - Leave mouse blocking in its current state If an item is not specified it will remain unchanged. The default settings for Warp 9 are saved in a CNF file. Warp 9 CP looks for a CNF file for the current resolution when it boots up. It looks in the directory where the WARP9_CP.ACC is located. When you select "Save" from Warp 9 CP, it saves a CNF file for the current resolution. If your settings are not being saved and reloaded correctly, perhaps something else is interfering with the path. Try saving your settings from the CP. You should find a freshly updated CNF file in the directory containing WARP9_CP.ACC. When you boot up, the CP will look for this file. If this is not happening in your case, something is wrong. I rearranged the AUTO folder recently to solve a different problem, so that may have caused it. There have been some screensaver problems, too. The default worked fine, but CLOCK didn't go on by itself, but worked via the hot corner. I'm not saying anything is wrong with Warp 9. I know it works! As in other reports, it works fine via the test button, but only blinks the screen once, and quickly, when activated ala mouse to corner or time out. Tried the first Clock mod u/l'd... same thing. I _had_ v 1.1 (not'a') but must have dumped it when I got the upgrade and saw the 'a' version. It's a pity, too. While Things.EOS truly get's me laughing, the Clock mod would see a lot of use from me. Current system (still using the loaner) is 1040STe, 2 megs, TOS 1.62 Supra HD (Quantum drive) the clock belongs to the Supra. Have tried it with bare bones setup, so I don't think it's a prg conflict. (But then, what do I know?) BTW - I seem to remember seeing the Filled Shapes mod running at the CT Atarifest. I remember in beta testing that we had a similar problem with one of the older modules, but I don't remember which one. As for Moving Pictures, you're correct that it's a non-resident program. However, it would seem that if SpeedoGDOS is loaded, it won't run (at least that's what's been reported more than once). The solution is to have it run before SpeedoGDOS. I have no idea whether it's something in my code, something in GFA's compiled code or something in SpeedoGDOS. If these settings are the same as your defaults, it makes no sense to include them in your DAT file. Thank you for listing your DAT file, but I've forgotten what your problem is. If you're having a specific problem with one of the settings, why not do specific tests to isolate it? If, for instance, mouse blocking doesn't work, create a test DAT file with just one entry to turn it on. BIGFOOT.PRG B1 Load the DAT file manually, run the program, and open the W9 CP to see if the state of the item changed. Then if you've found a specific discrepancy, you can let us know. However I did experience a strange weird occurance after running the TT all day, using the Clock 1.1a, I did move the mouse to disable and then booted up EDGE.PRG, got into the program OK but when I selected another drive for info all Type became a much larger type, no crash etc., I re-booted the machine and have not seen it again. The only typeface I ever use with Warp9 is BIG.FNT with the Fortune cookie EOS. I did re-boot EDGE.PRG 4 times before re-booting the machine with same results. Nothing boring about using ATARI, it sure keeps you on your toes (or on your but as the case may be) (G). Just LOVE it. Frank ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 170 Sat Oct 23, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 17:40 EDT Frank, That's pretty weird. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 171 Sat Oct 23, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 19:13 EDT Frank, Hmmm. It sounds like John doesn't think your symptom is really related to Clock or Fortune Cookie. It's interesting though. Do you use a .DAT file at all? Can you reproduce this effect? I think that I understand now. When DATMan loads a DAT file, it opens two windows with the Global Settings window on top. The Global Settings window has several buttons in it that are either SELECTED or NOT SELECTED. A button that is SELECTED is on. A button that is NOT SELECTED is off. The color of a button when it is SELECTED depends on how your computer's palette is set. However, the color of SELECTED buttons should be consistent across all of your GEM programs. Thomas ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 173 Sat Oct 23, 1993 F.LAWRENCE2 [FRANK] at 22:41 EDT John, Tomas I'll accept that explanation, You have never given me a 'bummer'. (G) It was the strangest thing to see with type running out of the little white boxes. After (for Tomas) I turned the machine off, not a reset, and allowed my computer a complete cold boot, everything is back to OK and nothing I can do will cause it to happen again. I look at it as something to put into 'trivia' and I'm sure not going to worry about it. Tomas - I do use a dat file and all works properly with it. Edge is in it with the saver off, I use no fonts, pics or fill patterns with warp 9, other than BIG.FNT with the Fortune cookie EXT. I guess that's a situation where I would use the null setting. My problem is that my mouse setting seems to want to revert to 1 whenever I run certain programs, regardless of what I have the default set for. It happens with Cal and WF for sure. I can't imagine how this is happening. My mouse is absolutely wild when it's like this. I can go to the ACC and click on mouse 4, and everything is normal. I'll be gone to Boston for a conference for a week. I'll check on 10/31 or 11/1 to see if you have any further thoughts. For a while tonight I thought something else was wacko. When I'd reboot, my cursor would freeze. After getting this with various DeskMgr presets, including a nothing one, I finally got the bright idea of checking the mouse plug. Yup, it apparently had slipped out just a little. Whew! Uh huh! And how does one know if a program uses GEM text for a flashing cursor? Thomas, Thanks. I'm in mono. The global settings come up white, so I assume black means off, but I'm not sure. I guess one way to find out is to just try it and see what happens. I just want to understand what you are describing so I can help. All, Some Prism Paint files are making their way into the libraries this weekend. These are some of the pictures you may have seen at recent Atari shows at the CodeHead booth running on the Falcon under Warp 9 and the SlideShow EOS module. This is just about as beautiful as a screensaver can get. Charles did the converstions with Prism Paint and John added his personal touch to a few of them. (See CODE_QTS.ZIP ) Several folks have asked if we could make these files available... ...So, while Charles is out of town I've borrowed his Falcon and taken on the archiving project. Any requests? ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 179 Sun Oct 24, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 07:54 EDT Al, Vag Rundschrift is number 5 in Calligrapher's URW font library. Ken Van, There was a bug in the mouse acceleration settings through the DAT file. It was fixed in v3.80. I can't remember if you've got the new version yet. The question is not "how does one know if a program uses GEM text for a flashing cursor?", it's "if you can't get Extend-O-Save to kick in when you see activity on the screen, why not turn off the GEM Graphics/Text button to see if it will kick in?" I was relaying the cause to you. You don't need to know the cause if you know the cure. Datman's global settings box comes up with the buttons deselected. When you select them, they turn black on a mono monitor. If you _select_ "Initially off", Datman will put an entry in your DAT file telling Warp 9 to turn that function off. If you leave the buttons deselected (white), no entries will be made in the DAT file to turn off (disable) these features. Your confusion over Datman may diminish if you remember that Datman is not controlling Warp 9, it's controlling Warp 9 DAT files. Bill Nicholls, Your report really puzzles me. If you've got a Mega STe and still have a problem with Clock 1.1a, my theory about machines without a native clock goes out the window. This is very strange. We've never had a problem with any of the 3 versions of Clock on our Megas, TTs, or Falcons. I guess it's time for me to break out an old 520 ST with TOS 1.0 and see if I can find the problem. My point being you should just use whatever method will allow you to read the info from the screen during bootup. Personally, I used the NVRAM cpx to set the bootup res to 80 columns, 16 colors, and line double (if you have the german version, line double is the long radio button above the one called 'compatibilitimus' or something like that). I left all the other settings as is. If you're thinking of downloading them just to convert them to GIFs, you might want to just go to the source and get the original GIFs. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 196 Mon Oct 25, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 03:50 EDT Ron, I think Terry's idea will work very well. Thanks, Terry! These pictures are being uploaded in this format to fill a void in the libraries of pictures that Warp 9 will support in this particular resolution on the Falcon. The SlideShow EOS module is kinda useless without pictures, don't you think? These are the pictures to show off your Falcon and Warp 9 with. Wait until you see "Frosty". It has nothing to do with snow. Sam, Do you mean the long descriptions? I've 'tried' to make it clear in both the short and long descriptions that these files are 640x480x256 files. In Falconese, that's 256 Colors, 80 Columns, Double Line Off on a VGA monitor. Period. Prism Paint files are quite resolution specific and I doubt that any variation from that setting will work. If you mean the descriptions of the pictures themselves, I'll work on it. ===Tomas=== ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 197 Mon Oct 25, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:05 EDT John, Another user reported this to me, and I confirmed it. Under the latest W9 and Geneva on both systems (TTs in medium res), activating the Reply function in Aladdin while reading messages scrambled the screen, leaving what seemed like disjointed lines of text beneath the text on the screen, in both halves of the display. Removing W9 was the only way to get around it, although clearly there's not enough evidence to know what the real problem is. The TT here was running a standard complement of TSRs and DAs, nothing odd, and the only ones I was running in common with the other user were the Task Manager and the W9 control panel. Not a big problem, but can you see if you can duplicate this? A second question: My CDII card is on the way, and I am, of course, hoping that W9 works with it. Do you know if it will? If the screen acceleration features won't work with the CDII card, will the screen savers? And if that's the case, is there a way to run W9 with the screen acceleration turned off while NVDI is running also? There's a new version of NVDI just for the CDII card. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 198 Mon Oct 25, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 10:08 EDT I'm the person who reported the strange behaviour of Warp 9/Geneva/Aladdin regarding Aladdin's Reply window. It's the worst kind of problem, meaning that it's INTERMITTENT. Sometimes I'll boot up and the Reply boxes will work fine for an entire session. I'm beginning to suspect that perhaps EOS or one of its screensavers is the culprit, but that's an unsupported hypothesis at this point. I'll let you know more as soon as I do. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 200 Mon Oct 25, 1993 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 19:02 EDT Al, you mean they are pictures of Mini Mouse? The only programs that Al and I have in common are: Geneva (1.01), Warp 9 (I have 3.81, I can't speak for Al), and XCONTROL, and Neodesk 3.04. I run version 1.61 of ST Aladdin. 1.60 had some bothersome bugs as I recall. My TT030 runs in TT medium and has 4 Meg ST RAM and 4 Meg TT RAM. I didn't have these problems with the older versions of Warp 9 and Geneva. I usually try a "bare bones" configuration, but as soon as I reboot, the problem goes away. Al John, I'll check my Warp version. It was sent out five days ago, so I assume it is the current one. Tomas doesn't waste any time with those orders! The conflict may have been caused by one of the EOS modules, I suppose, interacting in some way with Geneva, although I haven't seen this sort of problem with Geneva before, running it all the time for a good part of a year through beta after beta. I'll keep you posted if it comes up again, and will see if I can find the interaction. I'll let you know how Warp works, if it works at all, with the CDII card. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 206 Tue Oct 26, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 06:01 EDT My Aladdin is 1.61 also. Al ImageCopy 2 is indeed wonderful, BTW. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 207 Tue Oct 26, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 06:07 EDT Tomas, I've supported the Prism Paint format and Prism Paint itself doesn't care about size. It'll load any size you cut from the screen. If your talking about how Warp 9 loads them it would be possible to paste a smaller image in a large sqaure and resave it if you need the exact screen size before it will load. Provided you have Prism Paint or something to make a Prism Paint file of a different size. The format itself is pretty forgiving. Will Warp 9 handle odd screen sizes like 1024x768x256? Just got my upgrade but haven't been able to try it yet.:-( ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 208 Tue Oct 26, 1993 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 06:43 EDT Al, And others. If you are having trouble with Aladdin, get versin 1.62 before you chase the problems too much. There were bugs in 1.60 and 1.61, else we wouldn't have 1.62. You may be having problems with something that is already fixed. If memory serves, a reply problem was fixed by 1.62. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 209 Tue Oct 26, 1993 M.JONES52 [Jonesy] at 07:35 EDT Tomas, Speaking of printing in full color, have you seen Kodak's new printer? Prints photographic truecolor quality (on photo paper); only 8 grand. No dithering - it mixes the dyes at it shoots 'em. Will print from photos or graphics files (don't know what formats, tho.) ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 210 Tue Oct 26, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 10:03 EDT Well I'm using Aladdin 1.62 and the conflict is rearing its ugly head even as I type this message. I believe that the conflict may not crop up until AFTER EOS has kicked in at least once. I was using Aladdin last night with no problem. Went to bed, then came back to the Clock 1.1a EOS displayed. When I went to write this reply in Aladdin (which I never quit out of) the problem was here. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 211 Tue Oct 26, 1993 MUSE [Tomas] at 10:28 EDT Realm, When I mention the size, I may not know what I'm talking about. I can't get these pics to load into either program in other resolutions. Jonesy, That printer is just outside my budget. ===Tomas=== ------------
