I too wish to toss my hat in with the folk that are more than pleased with the
performance of Word Writer II. I don't know about the tech upport and its
availability because quite frankly its was so well written and laid out that I
haven't needed it. I thought so much of WordWriter II that I purchased the
rest of their et of products, as money allowed. I am now the proud owner of an
integrated package of software that is entirely compatible with one aanother.
Pleased?...thats putting it mildly! Holy Chips! Its Mr. Goodprobe!!!

I called up Timeworks today to check up on the reports we've seen in the BB
here on GEnie that alleges that Timeworks is cutting back on their level of
technical support for owners of their products for the Atari ST. According to
someone named Donna in their marketing department, this is not true.  Donna
told me that they will continue to supply free technical support for their ST
product lines, just as they do for their products for other computers.

What may have contributed to the confusion may have been Timeworks'
elimination of their toll-free phone numbers.  This is a move on their part
that goes across the board...it is not being selectively eliminated for ST
products alone.

So the phone call may no longer be free, but the technical support is still
free (and available).

Well, I finally got WordWriterST to print out on the LQ2500 without the extra
line feeds.  How????  I tried using the Panasonic printer driver and darn if
it didn't work......  so, Text is now usable but graphics are the pits!!!!
NONE of my graphics based programs will work with it, they either don't work
or just look lousy!!!!  Seems the few that offer LQ1500 drivers only put the
thing in an 8-pin FX emulation mode, my old 1092 does better than that, and
not that much slower! Frustrating, a great printer almost totally without
support.  I may have to take it back after all......  Anyone know of a good
laser printer I can get cheap???? one with both HP and FX emulation?????  <sad
grin> Gregg..... PS: I did disable the 'auto line feed', didn't help any I'm
afraid.

I have the program and I have found it to be great.. BUT.. (there is always a
but). I can't type fast enough to do it but my wife can. If you are a power
typer then you CAN crash the program. It responds with a whole lot of the last
typed item and you are nix on saves or anything else for that matter. NUFF
SAID.. It is  STILL a great program for anyone under 60 to 70 WPM.

If anyone needs to have help with an NX-10 and WWST II I'd be willig to  help.
I have such a setup and use it almost daily.  It has run  very well for me
generally.  I do have some problems trying to  track down special codes in the
printer manual, but I'm getting the hang of it.  WWST II has the "embedded
codes" capability that seems to work well with the NX-10.  Please E-mail me a
message to check this category and topic as I don't drop by on a very regular
basis. Good luck and hang in there.  There's nothing I've wanted to do that I
haven't been able to figure out, not yet anyway! D. DOBBS

Just got WWST, and am a satisified consumer...but, the spelling checker could
use some improvement...all it does is show you similarly spelled words.  When
I mispell a word, it bears little resemblance to the correctly spelled word--
so WWST's spelling checker isn't as useful to me as it could be.  Hopefully, a
future update will include a [GUESS] option like First Word Plus which lists
alternate spellings not necessarily spelled similar to the word being
questioned....anyone from Timeworks listening.....?

I have to admit that the spell checker with WW II isn't as powerful as
thunder!'s, though the dictonary is much larger. I hear a 'few' rumors that
TWorks is working on an upgrade to WW II, but from the company all I get are
'no comments'....  Has anyone heard anything about this????  I use WWII quite
a bit for simple text applications like articles and such where an ASCII
output is needed (otherwise I use WordUp). Gregg

If I am reading the manual correctly, if I have only one printer configuration
file it is supposed to be loaded automatically. However, that does not appear
to be the case: I am forced to deliberately choose to load it.
 Considering that the large majority of people will only have one printer, I
think it makes a great deal of sense to have SOME way to autoload a printer
driver. So much sense, I am unwilling to believe that it doesn't exist.
 WWRITER is in \WRITER\, along with the .INF file. The .CNF file is in
\WRITER\TEXT\ along with the text files. Dictionary and so forth are in
\WRITER\STUFF\WWDICT etc. The .INF file correctly points to all these places.
 Where SHOULD I put the .CNF, and what should it be named? (It is currently
EPSON.CNF.)

 I called them last week about upgrading WWST ver 1.0.  They said version
 2.1 (or was it 2.01?) was available.  Price is $19.70.  Send both
 original disks, but not the manual, attn: customer service.  The update to
 the manual is an insert pack, not a replacement.

 BTW  As you may have noticed from messages here and there, the 800 number
 is a goner.  The 312-948-9200 number still works.

Working with the mail merge functinon of WWST2 is very simple in  it's
implementation. Although there is one big problem as I use it  now.  When ever
you want to use a mail merge applications you have  to open your document and
manually set the date.  It would be nice  if there was a time stamp function
that would take care of this  problem.  Has anyone contacted Timeworks
regarding future  upgrades?

I am having trouble with Word Writer II and my SLM804 laser printer I think I
have done everything right so far:  I installed the Diablo630 driver with the
WWINSTALL program.  I didn't change any of the escape codes because the driver
already had them.  I then saved the file as PRINTER.CFG.

Now, the trouble is that the SLM804 will print the first page of a but it will
not bold face or underline text.  Furthermore, if I print a document longer
than one page, the second page is all screwed up -- letters printed on top of
each other and bunched printing near the margins of the paper.  What can I do
to solve this problem (BTY, I've already tried to install the plain vanilla
Diablo printer and just add the escape codes, and that didn't work either).

I am having trouble with my Atari Laser SLM804 and Word Writer ST.  I believe
that I have loaded the driver correctly (Diable 630), and the program prints
the first page of an document beautifully.

However, the second page is always a disaster.  The letters print over
themselves (especially near the margins), the print goes outside the margins,
and the thing just looks generally terrible.

Furthermore, and this may or may not be related, I noticed that if I have the
program print page numbers, the numbers do not print on the right page, rather
they print at the top of a page of their own (The Diable emulation manual says
that is prints with 66 lines a page, so I didn't change the default page
layout setting).

I'm new in the Atari world and would really appreciate some help on this one.

One question on the new version....

 Has the scrolling been improved when working with "average" sized documents?
That is one of the reasons that I'd rather do most of my writing in Zoomracks
II and then import into WW for placing Bold headers, etc.... it was just too
darned slow. Also... the scroll bar should repeat when you hold down the
mouse. Was this added yet?

The big problem with WWII is that Timeworks has no intention of further
upgrades for thi or any of their other ST products. Kind of makes y(oops!)

If you're having header/footer problems with the SLM804 I suggest you delete
two lines from your text 'layout'.  Like from 66 printed lines to 64.  Easiest
way is to cut them from the space between the text and the footer/headers,
that leaves you with your original # of text lines. Gregg

I don't know of any way to get rid of whatever confirmation boxes that WW ST
throws at users, but many of them have default responses that are indicated by
a thicker border highlighting the default response's button.  Instead of
moving the mouse pointer inside the box and clicking you can just hit the
RETURN key on your keyboard if you want to go with the default response.  It
isn't a solution to your question, Mark, but it can help speed things up.

In too many cases, the default response is to NOT do what you just said you
wanted to do.
 Other Word Processors give you a choice of saving and exiting, exiting
without saving, or not saving - IF you try to exit with a changed, but not
saved, document. WWST2 gives you a choice of exiting or not - and the default
is "not" to protect you from accidentally losing the changes in a document you
haven't changed.

I was just thinking about your hope to cut out the repetitive steps of
clicking in confirmation boxes thrown at you by Word Writer ST.  While there
is nothing you can do with WW ST itself to eliminate the confirmations, you
can probably use Charles F. Johnson's MACRO MOUSE (The Catalog/Antic Software)
to automate many of the tiresome sequences in Word Writer ST. The prompts
would still be coming at you, but you could create a macro that would handle
the entire sequence of quitting Word Writer ST, for example.

In response to the reports online about Timeworks dropping their Atari ST
product line, I called Timeworks and spoke to a fellow named Rich in their
Dealer Support area.

I told him that it is being reported online and by Computer Software Services
(a large software distributor) that Timeworks is dropping their ST titles.
What is Timeworks' story?

Rich said that they are devoting most of their resources (I assume this means
financial and human) to getting their Mac version of Publish*It completed and
to market.  During this period they are not going to be publishing some of
their ST titles, but they will continue to sell Word Writer ST and Desktop
Publisher ST.  They will resume distributing their other ST titles (like Data
Manager ST, SwiftCalc, and Partner ST) in September.

I suspect that Timeworks is in a bit of a financial crunch right now. They
have been trying to eliminate excess inventory of titles for ALL computers
they support.  They have twice opened their warehouse doors to the public for
near-dealer-cost sales of their software in the past 6 weeks.  They have been
offering specials to distributors and dealers like crazy lately.  They are
definitely trying to raise cash quickly.

question for all you "experienced" users.

      Is it possible to set a default printer? I use the same printer most of
the time and I would prefer not to select a printer or see the warning about
no printer selected each time I use the program.

I can not figure out something that is probably pretty obvious.  When I hit
F10 the document should realign itself, am I correct?  This is used after
inserting or deleting words in order to keep the sentences lined up.  Well

If there are hard carriage-returns at the end of each line, you can't reformat
the text with the F10 key.  When you create the text file, don't hit RETURN at
the end of each line...this puts the hard carriage return there. Let Word
Writer ST wrap the text for you as you type. Only hit RETURN at the end of a
paragraph.  Text entered this way will reformat just fine when you use F10.

       The other source of those hard carriage returns that Jeff is
 telling you about is if you have imported the text which was in ascii
 format instead of Word Writer's format.  I do that all the time, and
 you have to get rid of those returns somehow if you want to use WW's
 reformatting functions.

       The easiest solution (depending on how you look at it) is to use
 a utility called Translator (prg or acc) on an ascii file and instruct
 it to convert from ascii to First Word.  The FW format works just fine
 in WW.  Translator is file # 7223.  Other solutions are Elvert and
 DCopy.

       PS: if you want us to know what to call you, just use the
 command NAM (or 16, if you like numbers) at any bulletin board prompt
 and it will let you adopt a name on this bulletin board.

I just tried my program again.  It seems when I press F10 with no carriage
returns it works.  Sometimes it doesn't.  I see the "ripple" go over the
paragraph as if it's working but it doesn't alway work. After three tries, it

the text so I can view it on one screen.  This way I won't have to click on

 That's a simple one.  Just go to the OPTIONS menu and choose the SEARCH &
 REPLACE feature. In the 'of' line just put in one space and in the 'with'
 line put in one space.  Then tell it to search/replace ALL.  It will then
 go through the entire document replacing the 'hard' ASCII spaces with the
 'soft' WordWriter spaces.

 After you do that, just go back to the OPTIONS menu and choose the FORMAT
 TEXT option.   It'll re-format your document  to whatever page-width that
 you have choosen (I think the default is 68 characters).

 I usually take the SEARCH/REPLACE one step further.   The first time I'll
 put in two spaces in the 'of' line and one space in the 'with' line. Then
 I'll put in one and one.   This will also catch all  of the double spaces
 that are in some justified documents.

       Lloyd - re replacing hard spaces with soft spaces

       I didn't know Word Writer would do that!  That means that the
 search and replace function is really doing more than searching for a
 specific ascii character and replacing it with another.  It is
 actually searching for all of the hard spaces _and/or_ the soft spaces,
 and replacing them (in this case with soft spaces).

       That is, when you type in the "space" in the 'of' line, which
 should register to WordWriter as a WW space, or soft space, it goes
 off and finds ascii hard spaces.

       Now, what happens to the ascii carriage returns when he
 reformats?

       I always translate my ascii text to WW format before importing
 into Word Writer for reformatting, but I'm going to experiment with
 your suggestion and see what I can learn.

       That's also a cute trick about one space for two spaces.  Then,
 you could throw in a "period space" to "period space space" to restore
 double spaces after periods.

 Mike,

 I use the hard/soft spacing feature of WordWriter only on small files, on
 all larger files (10k+)  I use TRANSLATE as it does  a better/faster job.
 WordWriter will  leave all c/r's in the file  and you have to  go through
 and remove them yourself 'by hand'.   TRANSLATE cleans the  files up much
 better and removes most of the extra c/r's.

       Terry - re "what is Translate?"

       Translator ( # 7223) is a program or accessory which can convert
 between First Word, ascii, and WordStar formats.  The FW format is
 usable in WWST and First Word Plus.  The author also put in a
 function which was useful to him at the time, that of being able to
 turn off GDOS.  It was done by Steve Nies, who also did DeskPac (Plus,
 # 5933, Docs #5934) a multifunction desk acc that was pretty
 interesting (appt book, note taker, dialer, calculator).  Elvert is
 also useful in getting ascii into WWST. (Lost its file number.)
 Elvert can do a number of useful things.  (It is sufficiently flexible
 that it can also do a number of useless things!)  You could also set
 up some macros for the Byte Mechanic to do it.

       Eileen - oops!  Sorry if I did a gender bender re "what's 'he'
 going to do with c/r's.."

       If you want, you can use '16' at any prompt in the bulletin
 board and give yourself a NAMe, like E.HECHT1 [ Eileen ].

 I think Mike has covered 'what is TRANSLATE'.  I just wanted to add that
 I've got/used  ELVERT  and several  other 'converters'  and for straight
 ASCII to  WW/1st Word conversion,  I feel that TRANSLATE beats them all.
 It even converts  some of the 'weird' PC ASCII text files  (some sort of
 word processor....they put  about 256 letters per line with some sort of
 strange control code to separate the paragraphs).

       Ah.  That's a long story I'll try to make short.  I use a
 floppy based system, save archived files in libraries with "companion"
 files containing the description (and file number), have a DiskTop2 prt
 file (5 columns) on the last disk of each library, keep DCopy.acc
 loaded, pop in the last disk of, say, utilities, use DCopy's type and
 "where is" functions to locate the archive and its companion from the
 prt file, pop that disk in and use DCopy's extract to screen to look
 at its docs and the type function to look at its companion file for the
 number.  (I can do that with less than 40K memory free.)  Unless the
 file(s) are on the last disk of the library, in which case it's one
 pop.

       I do that while inside Flash reading and responding to msgs.

       Most of the time my hard disk sits there quietly off, and my
 whole system is totally silent.  (Cable FM in the background.)  I
 usually leave my system on all the time, so, there's no time lost in
 waiting for slow floppy action (ie bootup).  If I need to go back and
 forth between big programs or need to have fast access to large files
 (DTP or DB), I turn on the hard disk.

       Another advantage to the floppy based system, besides the quiet,
 is to almost entirely eliminate the need for backups. (Except
 commercial disks and extra copies of DB files, or other disks that
 would be difficult to replace.)

       There are lots of libraries.  If a library gets too big to
 show its entire contents in a 30K (kept small for low free memory
 constraints) disktop prt file (that would be over 35 800K disks, I
 think), I would break the library into two. I may move all of my prt
 files to one disk, which would be able to contain the contents of over
 1200 disks.  (960 meg, if you like hard disks a lot.)

       Disktop 2: # 2444.  I only use it to create the prt file, not
 for its other functions, which DCopy can do much faster. (And save its
 db file for quick additions of a disk to the library.)

printer?? The Panasonic LP is a HP Laser Jet Plus (not LJII) compatible
printer. I searched thru GEnie's files and could only find a DeskJet printer
driver. I need a LJPlus printer driver.

P.S. To LLEPULLEY. Yep, I bought the used copy of WWST2 that Henry had on

I seems the the install program or WordWriter ST is sending and additional
subscript on command right after the initialization string and after any
embedded strings.

      Has anyone else had this problem? Is their a fix? Could my copy of one
or the other program be flaking out?

Harry,

      #7217 in lib #20 is DESKJET.CFG, a print driver for WW ST Ver 2. I have
used it with the DeskJet+ and found that I did not support all the features
that I wanted eg. superscript. However the DeskJet+ is not exactly the same as
the DeskJet. It might work fine with the DeskJet.

      After spending a lot of time I think I have the WW ST ver 2 printer
driver for the DeskJet+ figured out. If anyone wants a copy of what I use
please leave me a message and include what font (cartridge) you will be using
and I will try to put one together.

      Note I will be off line for about 2 weeks so don't be in a hurry.

      BTW if anyone has an answer or has had a similar problem as the one I
have with WW ST sending the "subscript on" command at the beginning of every
file please let me know.

             I have discovered,  belatedly, that there is a
       nasty  interaction  between  the  programs  in  file
       #14437,  SKIPPERF.ARC and Word Writer.   The printer
       configure files that come with WW do not  initialize
       the printer, so you get _two_ skip perforations, one
       from  the  printer  hardware  (which  WW  apparently
       doesn't use) and one from WW.   The result is a  lot
       of blank, or almost blank, pages.  There is a simple
       cure,  however.

       Save  a spare copy of your .CFG files and  make  new
       ones.    Run WWINSTAL.PRG,  select 'Initialize', and
       add  the  following  codes as  the  _first_  printer
       commands:
           027  <esc>    * command for printer
           064  @        * reset the printer
       Note that the numbers are decimal,  not hex.   Those
       are for an Epson LX-80,  but I suspect they apply to
       a very large number and variety of  printers.  Don't
       forget  to change _all_ the .CFG files you  use.   I
       use   three,    EPSONDFT.CFG,    EPSONNLQ.CFG,   and
       PRINTER.CFG.   PRINTER.CFG  is simply a copy of  the
       current contents of EPSONDFT.CFG that will be loaded
       automatically  when  you  enter  WW.

       Handling  the printer is one of the messier  aspects
       of the ST,  (and I suspect,  most PCs).  There is no
       way for a programmer to determine the current  state
       of the printer.   He can Reset it, but that is not a
       bed  of roses either.   As I recall,  I battled  1st
       Word because it _did_ a reset,  and I was trying  to
       nullify  the  paper out detector  before  using  1st
       Word.

       What is needed at a system design level is a way for
       a  program to interrogate the printer and  determine
       what the current settings are.  Lacking that,  there
       should  be a warning in the WW manual to the  effect
       that   the  _user_  must  establish  known   initial
       conditions.   The  problem is a general problem  and
       could  come up with _any_ program that modifies  the
       state of the printer and runs before WW runs.

 I just recently purchased a DeskJet Plus, and I've been playing the
 games of creating printer drivers for Word Writer, First Word Plus, and
 ST Writer.  I wasn't happy with the drivers I downloaded from the
 library for WW, since neither of them made small (6 pt) sub and super
 scripts.

 That meant I had to roll my own, and I quickly discovered that the
 install program for creating drivers for WWST didn't give enough
 spaces to input the codes for placement and size of the super and sub
 scripts, if they were listed sequentially. (HP "vanilla" sub and super
 scripts are not "automatically" smaller, like the Epson.)

 Fortunately, the HP DJP manual is excellent, and I was able to
 understand how to "nest" command sequences which have common initial
 strings, allowing the avoidance of reusing the first 3 parts of the
 escape sequence.  So, my driver has "proper" sized sub and super
 scripts.  If anyone is interested I'll post it to the library.

 In the past, I have always been successful at using the initialization
 strings of the install program to create a wide variety of printer
 drivers for Epson compatibles, (see CustmFit in the library), but I
 have not been able to get the initialization string to establish draft
 printing for the DJP (letter quality is the default), and somehow the
 driver overrides the DJP keyboard setting for draft.  I know the key
 must be in how the initialization is set up in the install program, but
 I haven't been able to do it.  If anyone knows how, I'd appreciate your
 sharing it with me.  Neither of the WW drivers in the library do it.
 (Hint: it doesn't do any good to code initialization for (1) the codes
 for draft print (2) the codes for Courier (the internal font) plus
 draft (3) the codes for the default font (# 3) plus draft (4) the codes
 for 10 point type plus draft.  Setting draft with JetSet 1.16 acc
 (which can switch the DJP just like its keypad does) gets overridden by
 the driver as well.  (As soon as the busy light goes on, the draft
 light goes off.)

 The draft codes work, as demonstrated by the ability to switch to
 draft in the middle of a document, say with coding light print for
 draft.

Everything is as it should be re the WW - HP DJP printer driver problem
(couldn't initialize for draft).  [Thanks again (!) to the Compare program;
I've already gotten my "money's worth" from that program, I'm overdue in
sending my registration fee.]

No real help from TimeWorks.  HP was very patient, appreciated some
information I gave them on errors in the manual (and agreed) regarding wrong
priority arrangements in the examples they give of "nested" escape sequences
(which had nothing to do with the problem, of course).  Most importantly, he
convinced me that what I was trying to do should work, and that there should
not need to be any "mystic" preliminary codes I might benefit from putting in
front of the draft codes.

The answer which I discovered (with my renewed confidence that it _should_
work) by v-e-r-y careful comparison of cfg files with Compare, even digging
out my original WW disk files, was that the cfg file which I had been building
on, namely one I had downloaded from the library here, which worked well for
all of the WW print modes (with the exception of sub and superscript,
corrected as mentioned in a previous post) was not _right_.  The "dividers" in
that file were different from the dividers in the cfg files which came with my
program.  (The difference being in "terminating" a section with 04 vs 07 hex,
before the next 0A, 0B, etc. sequence which precedes the particular escape
code sequences.)  It could have been discovered without Compare, but it would
not have been nearly as "striking."

All I needed to do was to start with a cfg file from my original disks (I used
the Epson, why not?) and build the cfg for the DJP _absolutely_ from the
ground up.  Now, everything does what it is supposed to do, including being
able to retain my setting on the DeskJet keypad, initialize as draft or leave
as letter quality by selection of drivers, and all that.

Now I'm ready to start building some drivers that I can use for printing two
(or more) columns in landscape mode on the DJP, using First Word Plus's 1st
Mail program.

      Thanks for the information on the config files.  I also found that the
manual for the DeskJet+ was very helpful.  I found that I could make nested
commands for super and sub script.  I am interested in finding out about the
priority order error in the manual. Could you post what you found out here or
in the DeskJet section please?

      The one thing that had be puzzled was the "dividers".  I had some
configs that seemed to work and others that for no reason known to man would
not work.  I guess some I had modified from original configs and others I must
have started fresh.

     BTW have you found a solution to the delayed (very slow) print out speed
that sometimes occurs with the DJ and WW combo?  It also afflicts som other
combinations and may be corrected (for one document) by pressing the off line
switch off and on quickly.

 I don't know where those came from.  I even took a look at one of my
 old disks which still held an install program from a previous WW
 version, and as far as I can tell, the install program didn't change.
 Maybe some of the cfgs have an odd divider or something.  I haven't
 bothered to talk to TimeWorks about it.  I don't think the fellow who
 answered the phone was aware of how the hex for the cfg was
 configured.

 I don't have any problem with WW printing to the DeskJet slowly, in
 either Epson emulation or standard, without the cartridge.  For some
 reason, I also don't have any problem with the DeskJet responding
 regardless of the order I turn on the printer or the computer.  I had
 anticipated using the diode fix, but I guess I won't have to.  (I
 guess that belongs in the DJ topic.)

I just want to tease you.  I just signed a contract so it'll be distributed
by MacDonald Associates Publishers (the ST Informer people).  More information
as we approach release, but it gives you much nicer output from WWSt files. It

Welll....  it _will_ work with Hp printers in landscape mode, but that's
because it uses... GDOS.  Yep.  I was afraid to mention it.  I, personally,
like GDOS because it's standard, and device drivers will work across programs.
It does do landscape mode in any font you have in up to 9 columns (but that
would probably look pretty silly).\

As soon as I see some royalties from it, I'll buy a copy of WordPerfect and
First Word Plus to make it compatible.  The internal code should be able to
support them, but I don't know the formats.  Anyone have a description or
first word plus format and some sample files?

It also supports STWriter files and ASCII text.  One of the nicest things it
does is to let you remap styles so that, say, anythin in light type prints in
bold outlined type or even a different font.

I'm not sure how long it'll take to get to market so I don't really want to
hype it up too much yet, but one advantage it has over some GDOS programs is
that the program is small so you have room for fonts and files.

I'll keep you posted.

I support the efforts of enterprising people willing to develop auxillary
programs that serve to update programs like Word Writer. Timeworks has
discontinued support of several ST programs like Word Writer, meaning
kthey'll still sell the product but not improve it. For some of us, there has
been a considerable expense in money and time invested in learning how to use
programs that the publisher will not update.  Low priced add-on programs that
improve other programs that their publishers are not supporting are welcome.

  I dislike the spell checker on Word Writer because it simply opens  its
dictionary at the approx. spot, your word may fall between.  Whereas an

    I personally like Thunder over the WW spell check, but I use both because
each has advantages.  Thunder is on all the time.  It is more intelligent.

    With Thunder if you mis-type a word like "tat" it will offer "cat" as a
choice; WW would be of little help if you were spelling cat phoneticly and
your name was Tweety Bird.  The Word Perfect spell checker is very
intelligent, and expensive.

    The WordWriter spell check is also good and it will allow you correct a
work and re-check it easy.  It is also less likely to get lost if you back
space too fast (a Thunder problem).

    In short they are both good. Neither is great.

I am having a verry peculiar problem. With a hombrew DSDD floppy I am finding
that WW ST II does not properly read its' own files, it seems to start
something after the actual file, and continue likewise past it.  Files read
fine from desktop. It used to work just fine, even with this homebrew drive
(which has stopped sensing media changes) It also cannot read inside of
folders.  This is quite perplexing and a BIG nussiance. So, if someone can
help me with this, I would very much appreciate it.
  Programs load just fine. This seems to be just a problem within Word Writer.
  I miss the first paragraph or so of a file, and get the first paragraph or
so of the next file included at the end.

Steve,

I'd suspect your floppy first.  I've heard of something called sector/track
creep.  When floppy is formatted to high end of it's tolerance then things
drift from one sector or track to another.  I think I read this in one of the
topics here in the ST RT, but I'm not sure off hand which one.  My guess is
that for some reason WWST2 is very sensitive to these things.

Look for a topic that relates to floppy disk formatting and you might find the
discussion I was talking about.  It's been since the first of the year I'd
say.

Is there a Word Writer driver for the IBM Proprinter III here on Genie? For
that matter, what is the Proprinter III? Is it a 24-pin printer?

I had to buy a DeskJet Plus Proprinter III cartridge to use the DJ on the IBM
A/S 400 at work. I'd like to also be able to print from WordWriter using the
cartridge to see how it looks.

All of the stock drivers for other printers I've used thus far print double-
spaced with the Proprinter emulation.

        I don't know of a Proprinter driver ready made, but it should not be
all that difficult to modify an existing driver.  I would start with an epson
and change the line feed code.  It sounds like the proprinter does not like a
end of line - line feed code.  You may have the correct code in your cartridge
manual.  Some of the HP manuals were complete, some pretty skimpy.

I too have a Gemini NX-10 printer.  but I have WW2, not 1.

There is a printer configuration utility in WW1 as well as WW2. You will have
to use the on disk utility WWINSTALL and go in there and make sure it gets the
code for "Line feed" as well as "Carriage Return".  You can look up on any
ASCII table for the values.  There's one in the NX-10 manual I know.  If you
use the basic Epson .CFG file this should all be taken care of though.  It was
on mine.

If you don't have an NX-10 manual, let me know your questions and I'll try to
look it up in mine for ya.

 I have a simple question for experienced wordwriter users:  How do you get
 the printer driver to load AUTOMATICALLY when you first load the program,
 to avoid getting the prompt saying you "have not selected a printer yet.
 You must select a printer before you print your document" (or something
 like that.  I did not see anything in the manual that instructs this part.
 I've saved the configuration after selecting the printer, but this doesn't
 seem to be the answer.  Is it possible that this is just the way the
 program is...you have to select the printer EACH AND EVERY TIME you load
 the program?!  There must be an answer!!

This frustrated me for some  time also.  It's a real pain.  Lloyd is exactly
right in his solution however.

I have an "additions" booklet, which was included at the back of my manual,
which contains this solution. It corrects the information at the top of page
18, which is erroneous.

  Per the manual, WordWriter expects one field per line terminated with a
return.  Do not skip lines or place any spaces in front of the left margin.
Do NOT place a return after the last record in the file.  Hope this helps.

Has anyone had any problems printing WW2 files while running WW2 from one of
the new Mega STE computers?  My program "bombs" at each attempt to print, or
it will simply print garbage.  I have an EPL-7000 laser printer and have used
WW extensively with it on my old 520st without a hitch.  I've tried printing
with all DA's and Auto programs disabled yet the results are the same.  Any
suggestions?

I have not been able to crash or bomb TW with the Search & Replace setup you
mentioned (i.e. changing 'the' to 'two') from the multi column tutorial file.
I'm not crazy about text block options either and find the <ALT><LClick>
feature a trifle clumsy and quirky at times. I do like the macros, spell
checker and table of contents/index  capabilities but with the latter, you
have to edit the entries at the end or accept the text exactly as you entered
it in the body of your text.

Calligrapher appears very promising too but has some downside problems too.
The key disk is, on reflection, not a bad protection scheme but I'm two weeks
into the program and haven't received the updated version from the UK yet.
This is to be expected given the distances but I would prefer something a
little faster so I can get into really using this apparently powerful program.
The GDOS Dutch fonts display cuts off the descenders.  I couldn't seem to
alter the font at all to correct this problem but then discovered if I went to
'custom' line spacing that the a setting of 3 or 4 extra points would reveal
all of the descenders.  Unfortunately this caused all sorts of ugly results in
the printout.  I'm hoping the upgrade program, thesaurus and font disk they
send will iron out these problems.  Let's also hope the folks across the pond
get on line here as Compo has done.  For me, both TW and Calligrapher are some
distance ahead of any other graphic word processor......I still love my
WordUp!  Maybe it's just familiar but if Atari really is going to release an
updated version, this guy is going to be one happy camper.

Until then, I'll keep trying the various wp's out there and vote with TW and
Calligrapher for now.  I am going to try WF2 again to see if I can get more
comfortable with it but for long reports such as I do (25-30 pages) it just
isn't suitable as a wp.  Goldleaf is right, it's a document processor for
short stuff.

There's a desk accessory called EXTAKEY (no 'R', I'm pretty sure). It lets you
enter non-standard characters in word processors.  It should be in the
libraries.  Let me know how it works out.

If you are using the Diablo emulator, you can forget about it. It is so
troublesome, especially with WW2. Do what I do -- download Laserbrain and use
that (Epson emulator). It may take up more memory but it works, which is more
than I can say for the Diablo emulator.

Dave - I don't know if Timeworks is still doing upgrades on Word Writer ST or
not.  You might give them a call.  They are located in Northbrook, Illinois so
you can get their phone number from directory assistance.

I imagine they would probably need to the original floppy disks plus an
upgrade fee in order to do the upgrade.  If you didn't get the original disks
and documentation, you won't likely be able to upgrade.

You can print Word Writer files to Atari lasers with G-Print to get nice 300
dpi fonts from your files.  G-Print understands Word Writer codes for
boldface, italics, page breaks, etc.  It's FSM GDOS compatible, but it comes
with regular GDOS for now.  There's a demo version in the library and in
SoftSource (though that one's kind of old)...

Wrong again, Chris.  Timeworks had nothing at all to do with Publisher 2 ST.
Timeworks has utterly, completely and without any plans for reconsideration
abandoned the ST market.  (But then, who can blame them)?

Publisher 2 ST is handled by ABC solutions.  They may also have rights to some
of the other ex-Timeworks products such as Word Writer, but you'd have to ask
them...

No, Publisher 2 ST is a TimeWorks product.  So's the Mac version I see
advertised in MacWorld...  TimeWorks just isn't expending any energy (or
money) in advertising/distributing it.  They've left that (and ST support) to
ABC Solutions....

Why am I wrong "again"?  ;-)  Or do you mean to imply that there will be a
WordWriter 2.1?  (And monkeys might fly...)

I have had Word Writer 2 for a while now, and now have a question about a
couple folders on the disks and if they are really needed for operation. The 2
folders are:  WW_VI7_2.01 and WW_VI7_2.0  and they contain no files. What are
they for? Are they just to tell the version number? Under the "About
WordWriter" menu it says that I have version 2.00.

        Actually, I was told by someone inside Timeworks that Timeworks has
completely abandoned the ST market.  This was when I heard Publisher 2 was
available.  They could not even accurately give me a number to call regarding
the product.  I have not doubt, however, that they still support the Mac.
Publish It! on the PC and old Apple 8-bits has seen three or four upgrades,
while Publisher ST remained stagnant....

        (I could be wrong, but I really don't think so... Where did you hear
'It is a Timeworks Product...'?)

So Word Writer is no longer being published.  And now there are many other
word processors available.  I'm looking for something with the user
friendliness of Word Writer but that can make use of the smaller system font.
I often print to my Epson compatible printer in Elite mode which gets me 96
char/line.  I wish I could see all 96 at once. Is anyone aware of a word
processor that can do this?

Word Writer can do it if you either set the init string in the "print" dialog
to the codes (listed in your printer manual) for elite pitch, or if there is a
switch on the printer.  All you have to do is move the margin to the right.
(Point to the "R" on the top line, hold down the button, drag it to the right
as far as you need, and let go...)

I know Word Perfect uses the small font in monochrome mode, but it is no
longer being actively supported for the ST.

The Calligrapher (from Charles F. Johnson) is a new word processor, I don't
know much about it, though...

Joe, Redacteur 3 had a 6 page review in the April 1992 issue of ST
Applications - a British mag. I will quote from the cover page:

"...a powerful and extremely fast word processor that has built up a large and
loyal user-base in France over the past few years. Graphics handling,
paragraph styles, choices of fonts, text analysis, varied import and export
options, spell-check, mailmerge with the database provided, creation of maths
formulae, a huge array of printer drivers, and a high degree of

impressed!"

I can also tell you that I spent an hour glancing through the Redacteur 3
manual. It is over 600 pages, softcover bound, and is very thorough, full of
illustrations. In fact, I would say it comes very close to the Calamus SL
manual in quality and thoroughness.

I checked out an older demo of Redacteur, and thought it was quite
interesting...  faster at screen draws than Calligrapher (well, of course! it
doesn't use GDOS), some very neat features...  Quite impressive!  I'm still

Yah, I do program...  Mostly for fun or the occaisional course at school.
I've been thinking about writing a text editor/word processor for a long time,
but I really don't have the time to do it. And I can't think of a good way of
implementing some of the good algorithms I know!  I had a _weird_ programming
course last term... ;-)  If anybody knows how to do AVL trees, I'll bow before
them... gack...

Word Writer 2 with STeno _should_ be enough for me though.  The only thing it
doesn't do is remember that I've only got 64 lines/page with the Deskjet...

Now all I need is 4M so I can load three or four copies of STeno at once and
still have enough left over to run PageStream...

        AVL Trees?  I've done lotsa trees before but I'm not real familiar
with the various terminologies.  Re: writing a WP it's the interactive editing
part that kills you.  The actual text processing part is straightforward.  Me,

I can do sorts...  The problem with hashing is how to pick the hash...  I
never trust my own judgement.  I've also never tried to implement one...

AVL trees are special, weirdly blanced binary trees...  The worst-case search
and best-case search on an AVL tree is very close...  Naturally, they give you
nightmares, and my Data Structures book doesn't have a definition for them.

I've been pondering word processors, and the usual way to do things seems to
be to make a linked list out of the lines...  I'm not sure how Word Writer
does it, but I was trying to come up with a way that wouldn't waste much
memory, and wouldn't overtax the memory functions of the ST...  The problem
seems to creep in when you start adding/deleting things from lines...

Hmm, maybe we should sneak over to the Programmers CAT, before Jeff gets us...

  Ok, I give up.  I have been trying to get the Form Letter option to work in
WW 2 and am getting slightly t-ed off.  My manuals are still in limbo
somewhere on the Atlantic and until they get here I am stumped.

Here is what I am doing:

I print a list of address to disk in Partner ST, import this address list into
WW2 and pretty it up a little then save it in ascii format.

Next I make my form letter and put the light 1,2,3 where I want the form
letter to insert the proper addresses and names.

When I print the thing, the first line from the .ASC file is input where the
light 1 was, but the light 2 and 3 print as a normal 2 and therr on the paper.
On the second letter, the second line of the .ASC file is printed where the
light 1 is and the 2 and 3 are printed out again.  This goes on until the .ASC
file has been read completely.

So, what am I doing wrong??   Help!!!

Robert,

you're missing the lines/record setting in the form letter print dialog.  You
need to set this to 3 for your example.  It is not very clearly spelled out in
the manual.  For the example that comes with WWST2, for instance, your need to
set it to 9.  It is just the number of variables you have in your form letter.
It defaults to 1, hence the output you are getting.

To get to the form letter menu you should save and close all documents by
clicking the "Close" box., go to the print menu, select 'Form letter" and an
item selector box will appear asking you to load your form letter. After
loading the next menu will ask Datafile:lines/record. enter the number of
lines in each record.

When you create your data file be sure to have a return after each data entry
and no extra returns between data. You also should not have a return after the
last data item.

There's an HP DeskJet 500 driver in the Library (I think) that should work for
your Laserjet II.

The Printer Utilities Pak will be going out the door as soon as I return from
the BRACE show (actually that's going to be about August 15th since I'm in
Pennsylvania until then). In the meantime I hope to get out a newsletter which
should thoroughly explain the delays. It has become a personal vendetta to get
this product out but as I've said before you should be more than pleased with
the results. Stay tuned.

The Printer Utilities Pak is essentially a major upgrade to the Deskjet
Utilities Pak which now includes support for all HP tray-style printers
(Lasers and Deskjets) and the Atari SLM line among many other things.

The product has been delayed for quite some time do to numerous reasons but
I'm quite confident it will be on most dealer shelves by the end of August as
promised.

As far as Word Writer is concerned, we're including quite a few drivers that
will let you access several DJ, Laserjet, and SLM fonts through drivers.
Drivers are also included to take advantage of 1st Word Plus and ST Writer.
More drivers which are being added and will not necessarily make it to the
first release will be announced soon.

If you have more detailed questions, please feel free to pose them here. I
will be making formal press releases as soon as the product is out the door to
those who have already upgraded and GEnie is definitely the place to find me!

Lou, I think I stated that I am using the SLM804 with the Diablo 630 Emulator
and Wordwriter ST with their built in Diablo driver. Do you have any ideas on

Frank, I haven't used Diablo for a long time. I run the LASERBRAIN Epson
emulator with WordWriter. I really can't recall how Diablo performed in terms
of text effects like underlining, etc.

Anna, it happens all of the time, but I found a way around it by inserting the
underline code in the driver.  I was originally told that it wasn't necessary.
But now since I've done that I get a nice solid line but now it is shifted to
the left by one or two characters. DO you have  any cures?  Thanks,   Frank

Frank - re underline print problems with WW2

I don't have an SLM804, but it is possible someone may be able to figure out
the solution by looking at your printer.cfg file as well as a small WW doc
file that you have or can make that prints improperly as you've described.
Why don't you upload an archived file which contains those files and your
description of the resultant printout into a library here so we can take a
look at them with the WWInstal.prg and WWriter.prg (and maybe a hex reader
prg) and see if we can figure this puzzle out.

Some of us who have been bamboozled by printer driver problems and have
managed to slay the dragon love to take on a challenge.

I have WWST 2.0.....got it on a used HD I purchased a year or so ago. Have
tried to re-register it, and purchase a manual, but the folks at Timeworks
have been VERY unresponsive. Have figured out most of the program's basics,
but I've got a couple of ?'s maybe someone can field:
        1.  How do you access alternate characters (I do lots of
            stuff in German, for example, and need Umlauts.

        2.  Is there a way to change the active button in the dialog
            boxes?  It's a bit of a pain to have to reach for the
            mouse when closing a file....I don't mind the safety, but
            I'd like to be able to just hit return, rather than click
            on YES.

The reason Timeworks doesn't give you the time of day is that they dropped
support for the ST platform years ago.  Actually, Timeworks never did develop
this product - GST in the U.K. did.  Timeworks was just a
packager/distributor.   The most current word processor by GST is now going by
the name "First Word Plus".

To make matters worse for you, to the best of my knowledge the original WWST
is not capable of doing either of the things which you want.  You can get
around the problem of changing the active button with a separate program here
in the ST RT library called "Formdoit" but I don't know how to get around the
other problem (German characters).  Perhaps your best bet would be to invest
in something a bit more modern.  Have you looked at DBWriter yet?  Its
freeware from David Becker and it's really outstanding.  The RT library here
not only has the main program but also the Spell Checker and Thesaurus
modules.  I think you would find that it does almost everything you want
including the ability to insert alternate characters.

  If you have TOS 2.06, you can access all of the avialable ASCII characters

I've got TOS 1.4....doesn't seem to be a way to access alternate characters
that I can see.  Tried to DL the DBWriter, but it says it's HI-RES only, and
I'm a MED-RES kinda guy.  So okay, looks like I'm stuck with WWST's
limitations, till I get fed up enough to buy a new Word Processor Program.  Oh
well.....got fed up enough to re-read my Pagestream manual and figure out how
to get alternate characters there instead.....think I'll just put together a
file with letterhead and import the text from WWST, then change the few
characters that need it....a pain in the butt, but I guess it'll have to do
for now.

I recently began printing labels on WordWriter, but am having trouble at the
end of my 12" page.  The printer receives a form feed at the bottom of the
page.

Is there a way to eliminate this form feed or do I just have to put up with

MIke, You hit the nail on the head.

Finally dawned on me for my mailers to change the 66 to 72.  Took only a
coupla hours and a loud scream at the wall.

That served to get the printing on one page, but I still am getting "Form-
Feed" after the end of the page when I use the 72 line page layout.  Matter of
fact, it feeds two pages.

 Try saving the file to disk, then print from the desktop. This will work
unless you have special commands in the dos, i.e. Bold, superscript, etc....
You might also try printing to disk, but I think that this will include the
formfeed command.

reconfigured the .inf file and have had no problems.

Jerry -

You only need to use WWINSTALL if you have to customize your printer driver.
I had to use it because my 9-pin Panasonic would ignore boldface if I was
using the courier font or the Bold PS font.  SO I used WWINSTALL to change the
ascii codes for BOld to something that worked better.  This is the only type
of instance in which you should have to use it.  To set a printer driver as
your default driver (modified or not) simply rename it to PRINTER.CFG

Given that TOS error 35 is a sort of "file not found" error, I would suspect
that WWINSTALL.RSC is not in the same directory as WWINSTALL.PRG (it should
be).

I've been using Word Writer since 1987.  I do A LOT of legal writing and am
STILL quite happy with this word processor!  A new lawyer in my office just
brought in his PC clone and it took him the better part of 15 minutes just to
access his Word Perfect program.  I showed him my Mega STe, turned it on, hit
F-1 and within seconds I was into Word Writer, with instant access to my
files. Also, within seconds, I opened four files and performed cut-and-paste
among them, moving from window to window with nothing more than a point-and-
click or Alt "a". Needless to say, he was amazed.  The cut-and-paste function
is so quick and easy that I have no need for Word Perfect- type macros.  The
only complaint I have about Word Writer is that it has no auto-save feature.
Are there any auto- save utilities for the ST?  If so, can they be used with
Word Writer?

Mike,

CodeKeys from CodeHead software will record your keystrokes and play them
back. You can assign ALT-SHIFT-S to a macro that saves the file and returns
you to where you were, and so on.

Mike,

That's a big topic, and there are probably a lot of archived messages here
relating to WP and the learning curve and all that.

Yes, there is a much greater learning curve, and I must confess that even
though I wrote a document (available in the libraries here) on using Word
Perfect, I have been of two minds about it for years. After watching my wife
learn how to use WP on her 4-meg 1040ST, I'm convinced that it is, indeed,
easy to learn in the very basics, and so I'm not as concerned as I used to be.
There are many plusses, too:

  - WP 4.2 (PC) macros work fine on ST WP 4.1
  - Many books are available (in libraries) that give tips on 4.2 for the PC,
and they also apply in many ways to ST 4.1
  - The choice of mousing vs. fkeying is one that PC users prior to 5.0 didn't
have, and that makes the ST version more powerful and easier to use.

BTW, the newest Windows version of WP *still* prevents users from opening more
than two windows at a time. The ST version does not have that limitation.

Riddler,

There is a program called XLATE.PRG, a shareware program that works quite
well. I have a copy of this on a STI PD disk and used it a time or two. I do
recall that it will run on ST in med and high rez. It will also run on a TT
med and ST high. It will convert 1st word and Word Writer ST to ascii or ascii
to either one of these.

I just loaded it and ran converting from ascii to  WW ST and works good. I
could upload this for you if you think it's what you want.

Hmmm.....Tis strange that it took your friend 15 min. to access WordPerfect on
his PC.  Surely he must have something configured wrong because I can access
WP on my PC in a matter of a few seconds?

However, until my son left for college Word Writer was his word processor of
choice.......when he had to switch to WP for compatibility with their computer
systems.  Even though Timework's has long since deserted the Atari market,
their software is still going strong.

So I guess that means that anytime one wants to comment or ask a question that
may not be ABSOUTELY, CLEARLY, and SUCCINCTLY defined by the Topic heading
(like this one), one has to search through all the existing topics to find one
that is appropriate or create another topic.  Not a very efficient nor
effective process in my opinion.  If one is concerned about "topic drift" it
seems to me all one has to do is ask a pertinent question or make a pertinent
comment that is more "on topic".  Isn't this what one does in conversation?

I still don't see how a discussion of how WW2 compares with another WP program
is "off topic".  Seems to me a question about printer drivers is just as "off

No Jerry, it was YOU that tried to rationalize using the topic heading.  This
topic heading is succinctly defined. Isn't it? Why isn't it efficient? Is it
better to have only one topic in the whole BBS?
 You are right, this is off topic. Thus if you want to pursue this more you
have my EMail address. However, I posted here instead of EMail to ensure some
others understand why we have topics. I stick to my rationale: it would be
more useful in the generic topic since not all WP users view this topic. It is
better there, not to create inconvinence, rather to aid discussion. Would you
ask about ATARIs in the MAC RT? Anyway, feel free to EMail me. I do welcome

Has anyone out there compressed WW2 with the file packer BACK PACKER. I have
and it works great.  The actual WW2 program file itself is just over 80k.  It
loads and runs a lot faster now.
