Wienerwald (Vienna Woods)

Made famous by Strauss, the Vienna Woods lay just beyond Vienna, providing refreshing vistas and quaint heurigen (wine taverns). By car, you can make the round-trip of about 80 kilometers (50 miles) in less than four hours. Public transportation—strongly recommended if you plan to sample wines in the Grinzing heurigens—is also available and easy to use. At Grinzing, you can rent a bicycle and pedal on gentle paths through the leafy woods. While at the Vienna Woods, take the bus or climb up on foot to the summit of Kahlenberg, a hill on the northeastern spur of the Alps. From the terrace of the church on the summit, you can look all the way into Hungary.
