Staatsoper (State Opera House)
The legendary State Opera House stands as one of the three most important opera houses in the world. If you don't have tickets for a production, you can still look inside. Tour times are posted daily. The grand staircase, sparkling chandeliers, three stages (including a rotating stage), and tiers of box seats will impress even the most jaded traveler. The building was constructed in the French Renaissance style and has arcades and carved columns. The front façade was all that remained of the original structure, built in the 1860s, after the devastation of World War II. But the State Opera House was such an important symbol to the people that Austria began to restore it in the original style as soon as the war was over. Today the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra occupies the pit, and leading stars headline performances. Daily performances are given from 1 September to the end of June. Ticket prices range from US$10 to $200, not counting surcharges and gratuities for those who use ticket brokers.
