While generally a safe city with low rates of crime compared to U.S. cities, over the past several years Vienna has seen an upswing in the number of purse snatchings. Take particular caution around Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), particularly if you are a solo woman. Never remove your wallet or open your purse in public places, especially when solicited by a stranger.
