Battistero di San Giovanni (The Baptistry)

The oldest building in the city (6th century), the Romanesque Battistero di San Giovanni beckons with its startling bronze doors, their panels depicting scenes from the New and Old Testaments. The eastern and northern doors were designed by a young Lorenzo Ghiberti (who finished them some 20 years later), the southern by Andrea Pisano. Dante was baptized inside under the 13th-century dome, watched over by figures of Christ being tempted by demons.
