Galleria dell'Accademia

Just a few blocks north of the Duomo, the Accademia gallery houses Florence's most sought-after attraction: Michelangelo's David. The young Michelangelo fashioned a large block of Carrara marble into the definitive portrayal of the emerging Renaissance man of the period, although it is now surrounded by a Plexiglas screen. Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners, commissioned for the tomb of Pope Julius II, can be seen here as well, and there are two floors representing Florentine painting and sculpture from the 13th through the 16th centuries.
