San Marco and the Fra Angelico Museum

This church and monastery was originally built in 1299, and then renovated and rebuilt by Michelozzo in the 15th century. The monastery is most noted for the extensive paintings and frescoes of Fra Angelico, who decorated its cells and cloister with deeply felt expressions of his simple faith. Fra Angelico was not only one of the most important painters in the Early Renaissance, he was also a devout friar in this monastery and painted in the service of his Dominican order. The museum today preserves much of his work; it also gives a sense of life in the meditative orders. Also of interest is the stark cell of Girolamo Savonarola, the monk who dominated the Florentine political scene in the 15th century.
