Fiésole

Actually a separate town, Fiésole offers the panorama of the surrounding Tuscan countryside with Florence nestled in the Arno valley. More a village around a piazza than a true town, Fiésole provides refreshing breezes even in the summer and offers a tranquil passaggiata past villas and gardens, all overlooking the valley below. One walk winds off the west end of the piazza toward the Convent of San Francesco; an easier one leads off the east end to the right of the small church. Although you come here to relax and stroll, you might consider a walk through the Roman and Etruscan Ruins (open 9 AM-7 PM in summer; 10 AM-4 PM rest of year; closed Monday; fee) found behind the Duomo. The Teatro Romano here still is used for performances, particularly during the Fiésole music festival in June and July.
