Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain)

A coin tossed into what is probably the world's most visited fountain (face away from it when you pitch the money) is supposed to guarantee your return to Rome. Toss a second one, and you get to make a wish! The newly restored Trevi Fountain was slowly constructed from 1732 to 1751, by Nicolo Salvi from a design by Bernini. Most warm afternoons and certainly evenings, the youth of Rome gather on its flanks for socializing. Pigeons, however, do not. During a three-year cleaning and patching, workmen installed a low-voltage electric-shock system to discourage fowl play.
