Via Appia Antica (Appian Way)

Extending from Rome to the port of Brindisi, this 579-kilometer (360-mile) route provided the ancient Romans with their first direct link to the Orient. Reached from the Porta Capena, just on the outskirts of Rome, it turns into S7 after a few miles. Alongside the Appian Way are tombs and monuments in various states of preservation, and, more recently, the villas of film stars and other notables. Drive through at night when the 2,000-year-old walls are illuminated, showing the burial niches of slaves set free from the time of Augustus.
