Piazza del Popolo

Recently scrubbed in a total renovation program, the square is now bright and clean. In the center is the Flaminian Obelisk (1200–1232 BC) on a pedestal embellished by lions spouting water from their mouths. Newly illuminated, it is captivating at night. The piazza has three notable churches: Santa Maria del Popolo, with frescoes by Pinturicchio and paintings by Caravaggio on the walls; Santa Maria di Montesanto; and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. No vehicles are allowed, but there are vast migrations of tourists day and night.
