Villa Borghese

When a Borghese cardinal built this estate in 1605, this land was outside the old city walls, but now the Villa Borghese gardens are an island of formal gardens, lakes, winding pathways, and forests within the greater city area. Roman families come here to escape the heat of the city, or to reflect upon nature: Ottorino Respighi's symphonic poem The Pines of Rome was inspired by the park's vistas.

Also here are several palazzo now used as art and culture museums, the Villa Giulia and the Galleria Borghese, a Punch and Judy puppet theater, bridle paths, and the Rome zoo.
