Spanish Steps

Since the 17th century, this has been the district of foreigners. The Spanish Steps, named after an ambassador's residence here, date from this period. No ordinary staircase, the steps are a bewildering mix of curves, straight flights, vistas, and terraces, usually covered with huge pots of flowers and lounging sightseers.

Although the views from the top are superb, most people cluster around the Piazza di Spagna at the foot of the steps. Here students, tourists, and artists gather around the fountain built by Bernini's father, Pietro, and designed as a sinking boat to take witty advantage of the low water level here.
